Anybody ordered? Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

Soul Glow.
The only thing glowing about Rick James was the end of his crack pipe.

You believe high ass Rick James? What about P stealing his girl and coming to his show and having the crowed cheer for him while Big Chick carried P around the arena. All of this was left out of Superfreak.

Haven't read that one yet...too expensive
But yeah, knowing Slick Rick, he was probably high as a kite

how come he mentioned vanity only ONCE in the other book?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Prince is only mentioned a few times in this book (13 pages) and very briefly. and Vanity only mentioned on 2 pages. One incident, Rick's mother was offended that Prince didn't give her an autograph so Rick charged after him to 'lay him out'. Prince says he didn't know it was his mom and apologizes to her and Rick and gives her an autograph. Rick is disappointed because "I really did want to kick his ass."
Finished the book last night, was ok.

Why are you smiling in your initial post on this thread if you have a problem with someone being called gay or on the DL?

The alleged snub toward his mother aside, I think Slick Rick felt threatened by the peculiar, young upstart who dared to emulate his stage moves, and whose astonishing talent made it difficult to go unnoticed.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yup, he all but said this in his autobiography. He was hatin', lol!!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
rick was never jealous of prince. he got bi and famous before he did.

On page 210 of 'Glow' Rick admits he 'resented' Prince. The person he is speaking with points out to him that the resentment was from fear of Prince's talent.
I enjoy RJ's music (purchased all of it) but with all due respect he's not in the same talent-sphere as Prince, imo.

In his autobiography The Confessions of Rick James: Memoirs of a Super Freak, Rick describes the moment he first saw Prince:
“The first time I saw Prince and his band I felt sorry for him. Here’s this little dude wearing hi-heels, playing this New Wave Rock & Roll, not moving or anything on stage, just standing there wearing this trench coat. Then at the end of his set he’d take off his trench coat and he’d be wearing little girl’s bloomers. I just died. The guys in the audience just booed the poor thing to death.”

That must have contributed to the 'tension'. Prince, 5 foot 2, wearing high-heels and bikini briefs but still getting more fortune, fame, respect, women, and praise.
Rick surely thought that Something in the Water Don't Compute. Rick reaches so far as to claim in 'Glow' that MTV kept replaying the video of 'Little Red Corvette' just to stick it to him. The only thing I 100% believe Rick about is that cocaine is a helluva drug.
