Marc Anthony Has Earned His Confidence

After nearly three decades as an international pop icon, with everyone from Bruno Mars to Pitbull seeking his advice along the way, Marc Anthony shares his secrets to career longevity, repeated success, and silencing the haters.

Before he could ever sell records, Marc Anthony had to learn to fight. The svelte, Grammy Award–winning singer-songwriter may blend in among his A-list peers today, but growing up in his old stomping ground of East Harlem in the ’70s and ’80s, a skinny kid named Marco Antonio Muñiz was getting stomped.

In the macho culture of New York’s largest predominantly Latino neighborhood, Anthony’s wiry frame made him a target. “In Latino culture—back then, anyway—being skinny was seen as a kind of weakness for some reason,” he says. “There were people who would test you.”

Anthony’s father, a former amateur bodybuilder, got his son started with some basic exercises. By the time the young musician was 9 years old, he could bang out triple-digit pushups in a day, but he still struggled to bulk up. He wasn’t exactly genetically predisposed—his dad, after all, competed as a 105-pound bantamweight—but the real lesson Anthony’s father was teaching him was confidence. “My dad was confident, and I think it takes somebody like that to weigh 105 pounds and enter a fucking bodybuilding contest,” he says. “So what I never lacked was confidence.”

During the course of his 26 -year recording career, Anthony has become one of the most successful performers in the world, selling more than 12 million records worldwide. His first English language solo album in 1999, Marc Anthony, which featured the hit singles “I Need to Know” and “You Sang to Me,” went triple platinum and helped ignite a turn-of-the-millennium Latinpop explosion that ushered in crossover artists like Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin.

Despite his musical accolades, including two Grammy Awards and four Latin Grammys, it’s Anthony’s high-profile personal life that’s brought the top-selling salsa artist more attention, particularly his 2004 marriage to fellow Puerto Rican singer and longtime friend Jennifer Lopez. The couple had twins, Emme and Maximilian, but divorced in 2012.

In addition, Anthony has three other children from past relationships: two boys, Cristian and Ryan, with ex-wife and former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres; and his eldest daughter, Ariana, from an early relationship with Debbie Rosado, an NYPD officer.

Through it all, Anthony, who recently dated Topshop heiress Chloe Green, has remained tight-lipped when it comes to his personal life. “The people I’ve ended up in relationships with are human beings. They’re not conquests,” he says, but he attributes any success with the opposite sex to charm, not looks.

Big Move: Inside His Salsa Return & Future Plans

Marc Anthony is backstage at the American-Airlines Arena in Miami, hopping from one foot to the other, like a boxer. His feet are clad in black patent leather shoes, and his slim frame dons a starched white shirt, black tailored pants and a fitted tuxedo jacket. He stares at the floor, adjusting his Aviator sunglasses, dimly aware of the din — the roar of 15,000 people awaiting the second of two sold-out shows kicking off his Vivir Mi Vida world tour — but focused only on the music and the cue from the 14-piece band already onstage.

He hears the cue and his head snaps up. Anthony briefly raises his hand to touch the silver rosary around his neck, makes the sign of the cross, kisses his thumb and climbs up to the stage.

He stands there until the screaming has subsided just a touch, and then he begins to sing. There are no dancers, no special effects, no moving sets. There are no distractions between him and his fans. This wisp of a man — 5 feet 7 inches, 120 pounds — with a torrent of a voice who makes the crowd bend to his will, compelling them to dance, sing, hush — until they are as delirious and sweaty as he is.

"There's nothing physical about it," he said in a conversation after that August 2013 tour debut, when asked how he prepares for his onstage marathon. "I have a beer and a cigarette before I go onstage. Once I put on the sunglasses it's almost like a football player putting on his helmet. The preparation is in my dressing room. I go over the set and decide where I can push. I change my set on the fly depending on how I feel and what I feel the audience wants."

It's the essential word to understand an artist who started out singing salsa, then pop, then crossed over to mainstream, then went back to his Latin roots, and finally branched out into film and TV — the projects seemingly disparate, but all personal.

"I call him a 360," says his longtime concert promoter and business partner Henry Cardenas. "The guy sings salsa, sings ballads, sings in English, the guy screams. He has all the ingredients no one else has. I always tell him, 'Marc, you are blessed.' "

And he may be in his best moment yet. Anthony has been on the road for a full year — almost from the moment he premiered his single "Vivir Mi Vida" (Live My Life) at the 2013 Billboard Latin Music Awards last April. "Vivir" exploded, spending 18 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart, the first tropical single in a decade to top the tally and the longest-running No. 1 tropical song in the history of the chart.

The track ushered in "3.0," Anthony's first salsa studio album in a decade, which longtime label Sony Music Latin released in June 2013. The set, produced by Sergio George, would go on to become the biggest-selling Latin album of that year, according to Nielsen SoundScan. And Anthony, 44, is in the midst of his longest, most lucrative tour ever.

The Vivir Mi Vida world tour, which was supposed to end in December, has already made more than 60 stops. All told, Anthony has sold 1.2 million tickets, according to tour promoter CMN. On April 17, Anthony kicked off a second Latin American tour leg. Then he'll head out to Europe and hit the United States again.

"It proves there's still an appetite for good f—ing music," he says. "I haven't been affected by the changes in the industry, thank God. Had the album not been successful it would have been a very, very convenient bullshit excuse."

All artists dream of hits, and Anthony has had plenty since his debut salsa album, "Otra Nota," in 1993. But "Vivir Mi Vida" has become one of those rare tracks that catapults an artist in his prime into a whole new territory.

"He really accomplished a salsa crossover between fans of the music and others," says Marta Artaso, Sony's marketing manager for the Latin region, Spain and Portugal. "We had our regional convention in Miami in April [2013] and all the global label heads came, including Edgar Berger, our president/CEO of international. And Marc had everybody dancing salsa. Edgar said, ‘I've been to hundreds of conventions and I've never in my life seen something like this.' "


"Vivir," a remake of Algerian singer Khaled's "C'est la Vie" (see story, below), transcended languages and territories, and shot to No. 1 in at least 10 countries. "There's a whole new wave of fans and it's fun again," says Anthony. "That's what this record did for me."

The success of the song — and the album from which it's from, "3.0" — have reinvigorated Anthony in other ways, too. He has expanded his business ventures, investing in a growing real estate portfolio, a technology company that makes 3D cameras, Mar Azul tequila and a premium hydration drink called Afterparty.

There's also his ongoing partnership with Kohl's, which last year delivered more than $100 million in retail sales, according to CAK Entertainment CEO Charles Koppelman, who brokered the deal in 2011.

A recent Friday afternoon found Anthony in the vacation home he purchased last fall in Casa de Campo — a resort in the Dominican Republic — looking out at a lush backyard surrounded by hammocks and slow-turning fans. And, yes, he was wearing clothes from Kohl's: khaki shorts, grey top and black belt. He's dressed in resort-wear, but this is no vacation trip.

Anthony came to the Dominican Republic to christen a new home and school for 50 boys funded through his Maestro Cares foundation. Like everything else, the project was borne out of instinct and friendship, after Anthony spent Christmas in the Dominican Republic with Cardenas, his partner in Maestro Cares.

The one project sidetracked by his recent success is his next English-language album, which had been slated for last year, and now is expected in 2015. Multiple collaborators have stepped in, from rappers to R&B artists, but he isn't naming any names until he decides which tracks make the cut.

"We have a lot of material," he says. "But I record the songs and I have to live with them for two or three years."

Now, with the achievement of "3.0," comes additional pressure for mainstream success. But the singer dismisses such talk.

"The opposite is true. I feel more confident than ever," he says. "Sticking to my guns [with "3.0"] and releasing this album gave me more confidence. If anything, it's ‘You're on the right track. Just continue trusting your instincts.' "

It's how Anthony continues to navigate his dual careers, his dual cultures and two languages. He doesn't try to analyze who will like what or why. It simply happens.

This summer, as he works on his new album, Anthony will continue to tour. He'll sing in Spanish and in English, playing new venues and letting his instincts guide him in front of the fans who come to see his shows.

"If you give me a chance, you feel what I do, no matter what language I sing in," he says. "I just sing, man. I dedicate my life to music. If you really want to know who I am, you have to experience it. You should check it out."

After playing live together since 2008, Sasha Dobson, Norah Jones and Catherine Popper have at last taken their collaboration into the studio. No Fools, No Fun their debut album – will be released on July 15 by Blue Note Records. The trio, known as Puss n Boots after flirtations with such monikers as Fangbanger, Dixie Fried and Shitstorm, will support the album with an East Coast run that kicks off on June 22 with an appearance at the Clearwater Festival in Croton-On-Hudson, NY. They will return to The Bell House in Brooklyn, one of their favorite hometown haunts, on July 15, play the 9:30 Club in Washington DC on July 17 and perform at the Newport Folk Festival (July 26-27). Tickets for the headline shows will go on sale this Friday, April 25.

Recorded at Studio G in Brooklyn with engineer/mixer Joel Hamilton, No Fools, No Fun includes five original songs – two each from Dobson and Popper and one from Jones – and seven spirited cover tunes, all culled from Puss n Boots’ live repertoire. The 12-song collection takes its name from the lyrics of “Bull Rider,” a Rodney Crowell song made famous by Johnny Cash. “Bull Rider” is one of three album tracks that Puss n Boots recorded live in June of 2013 at The Bell House. Over the years, they have also performed at the Bridge School Benefit, played stadiums with the Beastie Boys on the “Get Out The Vote” tour and joined Wilco onstage at Madison Square Garden, singing background vocals on “Jesus, Etc.,” a song that Puss n Boots interprets on No Fools, No Fun.

“We had talked about recording for a long time. A listen to the live recordings of one of the Bell House shows gave us a kick in the pants,” says Catherine Popper. “The record is a snapshot of what we do, warts and all.”

The album will be available for pre-order beginning June 17. Fans who pre-order No Fools, No Fun on iTunes and Amazon.com will instantly receive a download of “Down By The River.” Puss n Boots’ take on the classic Neil Young track will be released as a digital single on June 17.

“‘Down By The River’ is one of my all time favorite Neil Young recordings and I've always had this fantasy of playing it and rocking the guitar solo,” recalls Norah Jones. “I never really thought I'd have the guts to do it, but that's sort of what this band has always been about, trying new things. We always egg each other on, whether it was Sasha playing drums, or Cat singing an original song for the first time on stage.”

“We have always thrived on our live performance. We rage onstage,” says Sasha Dobson. “It’s exciting to think the positive energy that’s created from this band could reach beyond a small club in Brooklyn.”

Sasha Dobson grew up in Santa Cruz, CA. Her father Smith Dobson was one of the Bay Area’s most influential and in-demand pianists, her mom a well-known singer and her brother an accomplished drummer. By the time she was 12, Sasha was performing with the entire family at the Monterey Jazz Festival. She moved to Brooklyn at 17 and quickly assimilated into the NYC jazz scene, releasing 2005’s The Darkling Thrush, recorded with The Chris Byars Octet, and Modern Romance (2006). Jack White makes history with world's fastest released record Jack White Tickets

The singer also debuts new material during day of festivities at Third Man Records in Nashville

Jack White made history yesterday by producing the world's fastest released record during a day of festivities to mark Record Store Day at his Third Man studio in Nashville, Tennessee.

At 10am on Saturday (April 19), the singer took to the stage in the Blue Room of his studio to record a limited edition direct-to-acetate single. The room is the only live venue in the world where artists can record live shows straight to vinyl. The masters were then rushed over to United Record Pressing plant in Nashville, which began pressing the 45s before they were delivered back to hundreds of fans queuing outside Third Man, some of whom had queued all night to be there.

At the morning gig, White walked onto stage flanked by two men in helmets dressed like characters from 1970s cop programme Chip for the intimate studio show, tickets for which had sold out in 23 seconds. He began with the title track and first single from his forthcoming second solo album 'Lazaretto', the A-Side to the Record Store Day single. He then recorded a cover of Elvis Presley's 'The Power Of My Love' for the B-Side.

During the performance, a screen to the right of the stage showed a close up of the acetate template for the record being produced before an announcement declared that "the records have left the building!"

"Originally, we were gonna play these two tracks then go back to sleep," White told the crowd. "But we thought you'd like it if we played a couple more."

He then launched into The White Stripes' 'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground' before heading straight into 'Freedom At 21' and 'Three Women' – two tracks from his 2012 debut solo album 'Blunderbuss'. He then picked up an acoustic guitar for more solo tracks – 'Weep Themselves to Sleep' and 'Love Interruption'. A rendition of The White Stripes' 'Ball And Biscuit' saw the crowd sing all the vocals as White jammed along.

"We're gonna try a new song," he then told the audience, before premiering honky tonk rock track 'Just One Drink'. White Stripes track 'Hotel Yorba' was followed by another new track, 'Would You Fight For My Love' - a brooding number about a relationship breakdown, which culminates in White shrieking "I want you to fight for my love".

After the show, White then rushed off to the United Record Pressing to oversee the pressing process as more fans queued outside to get a copy in the sunshine.

Some 3 hours, 55 minutes and 21 seconds later, White returned in a black car flanked by the two men on motorbikes dressed as police officers to sell the first copy of the 7" on the specially constructed stall outside the Third Man shop. The first customers were Whirlwind Heat – who then went inside to play their first gig in eight years in the Blue Room for a one-off reunion to mark the re-issue of their 2003 LP 'Do Rabbits Wonder?'

"I woke up at about 4 in the morning last night, and I thought, 'Wow. I think there's about 12 or 13 things that could really go wrong tomorrow,' he told a press conference. "I just thought how difficult it would be to explain to people if we didn't pull it off, so thank God we did."

"When you just go gangbusters and attack something, it just seems to work out. All the molecules line up or something," he added.

Speaking about Record Store Day generally, he said: "It's bigger than ever. Every neighbourhood wants to have one [an independent record store] and the thousands of people you see here at Third Man and Grimeys and record stores all around Nashville even – you can see how popular and important that is to people."

Motley Crue’s Vince Neil Buys Arena Football League Team

Move over, Kiss. Motley Crue is getting into the game, too. Frontman Vince Neil has joined an investment group to buy the Jacksonville Sharks, and plans to move the Arena Football League team to his hometown of Las Vegas.

Neil tells the Las Vegas Sun: ““I sense the city would love it. I know that I will because it’s on my home turf.”

Las Vegas last had a pro football team between 2009–12, when the Locomotives played in all three of the United Football League title games — winning two — before the league folded. Another team, the Las Vegas Outlaws were part of the XFL, an attempt by World Wrestling Entertainment to break into football. The league folded after its inaugural season in 2001.

The far more stable Arena Football League, on the other hand, was founded back in 1987. “It’s a great action sport growing in popularity with every game,” says Neil, who hopes to move the club within two years. “There are some incredible players. I love the game. It will be perfect to have an AFL team in Las Vegas.”

Kiss recently brought pro football back to Los Angeles as part-owners of the AFL league’s LA Kiss, who opened their first season in March. Rocker Jon Bon Jovi also had a stake in the Arena Football League’s Philadelphia Soul from 2004–2008, a period that included one championship. He’s now reportedly in talks to buy the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.

Batman TV Series DVD Set To Include New Bonus Material From Adam West & Burt Ward

Earlier this year, it was announced that the Batman TV series, which ran from 1966 to 1968 on ABC, would be released later this year on DVD. In the initial announcement, not many details were revealed beyond that the home video release would include the entire series.

In an appearance at the Wizard World St. Louis Comic Con, Batman TV stars Adam West and Burt Ward revealed some additional details about the Batman TV series home video release, along with a release date for the collection.

“Finally, after an innumerable number of years, our series is going to be coming out, all 120 episodes,” said Ward. “I understand it’s right at the end of November this year in time for Christmas.”

Ward added, “I know this last week, both Adam and I at separate times, we went in and we filmed some additional bonus material for Warner Bros. that’s going to be included with the programs. And I also understand that they’ve really done a tremendous job digitally remastering our series so that it’s really going to be just absolutely gorgeous on DVD. So I think you can look forward to a very, very high class product.”

“Warner Bros. had a very fine director/producer they hired,” said West. “And he asked us the most profound questions. And Burt agrees that he asked us things that people have never asked before. And it was tough to answer, but I think we were both very honest and straightforward and told him what he wanted to know.”

“And as a result you folks with the new DVD can see us naked,” joked West.

West added, “We answer questions and tell you things that we’ve never said before. They were so tricky.”

Warner 90th AnniversaryWarner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced the Special Edition Blu-ray release of director Denis Sanders' Elvis: That's the Way It Is. The 1970 Elvis Presley documentary has been newly remastered and arrives in premium DigiBook packaging on August 12th.

Sanders' (Shock Treatment) "rockumentary" features the work of Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Lucien Ballard (The Caretakers, The Wild Bunch) and follows the August 1970 Las Vegas show's development from rehearsal to stage. Robert Plant has ruled out the chance of Led Zeppelin performing live any time soon, saying there is "zero" chance of another reunion show.

In an interview with the BBC about the forthcoming reissue of the band's first three albums, guitarist Jimmy Page said he was sure fans would be keen for another reunion show, like the one the band did at London's O2 seven years ago.

"I'm sure people would love to hear it," Page said. "I'm not the one to be asking, I don't sing."

When asked about the possibility of a show, however, singer Robert Plant said the chance of it happening was "zero".

The three reissues, which will be released on June 2, will feature dozens of previously unheard recordings. Snippets of two of the tracks – an early version of 'Whole Lotta Love' and blues classic 'Keys To The Highway' were heard on the BBC interview this morning.

Page has spent the last two-and-a-half years working on the reissues. "I don't want to die and have somebody else do it," he said. "I'm authoritative about what was done in the first place."

Page says it was "reassuring" to revisit the band's early recordings. "It's undeniable that we're good," he adds. "The band was the real deal."

However, he said that listening to the tracks years later has given him a different perspective. "My enthusiasm sometimes got in the way of finesse. I listen to it and go, 'Wow, why didn't I shut up a bit?'" he laughs. "I kind of overcooked it."

There will be "lots of surprises" on the reissues, Page promised. The final three will be released in 2015.

"These things aren't to study," he said. "They're to turn up very loud and say, hey, once upon at time, everything was just as easy as this."

When Monkee, Micky Dolenz (and one of our favorite personalities here at TMW) performs his solo show next month at the famed Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, Illinois (May 2), he'll feature a new component to it: A Q&A session with the entire audience following the show.

Inspired in part by a lengthy Q&A that Dolenz participated in during last month’s Monkee-Con event in New Jersey (that was received extremely well),Dolenz says he’s added it as a way to say thank you to all the fans.

Added Dolenz, “It was a terrific event at the Monkee-Con as the Q&A session covered questions about my whole career; from the TV-show of course, to my most recent solo album Remember and the Live At B. B. King’s recording. Andrew Sandoval from Rhino moderated it and did just an exemplary job.”

Jack White made history yesterday by producing the world's fastest released record during a day of festivities to mark Record Store Day at his Third Man studio in Nashville, Tennessee.

At 10am on Saturday (April 19), the singer took to the stage in the Blue Room of his studio to record a limited edition direct-to-acetate single. The room is the only live venue in the world where artists can record live shows straight to vinyl. The masters were then rushed over to United Record Pressing plant in Nashville, which began pressing the 45s before they were delivered back to hundreds of fans queuing outside Third Man, some of whom had queued all night to be there.

At the morning gig, White walked onto stage flanked by two men in helmets dressed like characters from 1970s cop programme Chip for the intimate studio show, tickets for which had sold out in 23 seconds. He began with the title track and first single from his forthcoming second solo album 'Lazaretto', the A-Side to the Record Store Day single. He then recorded a cover of Elvis Presley's 'The Power Of My Love' for the B-Side.

During the performance, a screen to the right of the stage showed a close up of the acetate template for the record being produced before an announcement declared that "the records have left the building!"

"Originally, we were gonna play these two tracks then go back to sleep," White told the crowd. "But we thought you'd like it if we played a couple more."

He then launched into The White Stripes' 'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground' before heading straight into 'Freedom At 21' and 'Three Women' – two tracks from his 2012 debut solo album 'Blunderbuss'. He then picked up an acoustic guitar for more solo tracks – 'Weep Themselves to Sleep' and 'Love Interruption'. A rendition of The White Stripes' 'Ball And Biscuit' saw the crowd sing all the vocals as White jammed along.

"We're gonna try a new song," he then told the audience, before premiering honky tonk rock track 'Just One Drink'. White Stripes track 'Hotel Yorba' was followed by another new track, 'Would You Fight For My Love' - a brooding number about a relationship breakdown, which culminates in White shrieking "I want you to fight for my love".

After the show, White then rushed off to the United Record Pressing to oversee the pressing process as more fans queued outside to get a copy in the sunshine.

Some 3 hours, 55 minutes and 21 seconds later, White returned in a black car flanked by the two men on motorbikes dressed as police officers to sell the first copy of the 7" on the specially constructed stall outside the Third Man shop. The first customers were Whirlwind Heat – who then went inside to play their first gig in eight years in the Blue Room for a one-off reunion to mark the re-issue of their 2003 LP 'Do Rabbits Wonder?'

"I woke up at about 4 in the morning last night, and I thought, 'Wow. I think there's about 12 or 13 things that could really go wrong tomorrow,' he told a press conference. "I just thought how difficult it would be to explain to people if we didn't pull it off, so thank God we did."

"When you just go gangbusters and attack something, it just seems to work out. All the molecules line up or something," he added.

Speaking about Record Store Day generally, he said: "It's bigger than ever. Every neighbourhood wants to have one [an independent record store] and the thousands of people you see here at Third Man and Grimeys and record stores all around Nashville even – you can see how popular and important that is to people."

Meet Mad Satta

Here at Revive, we’re all about bringing you the hottest and dopest new acts from around the way . Hailing from Boston/New York, is the soul, R&B, and reggae collective Mad Satta. Joanna Teters leads the band up front with her soulful contralto vocals and is joined by Eric Zeiser (trumpet), Collin Wade (alto sax), Jason Fitch (tenor sax), Ted Mocardi (guitar), Kevin Theodore (keys), Ben Carr (bass), and Zane West (drums).

While it’s common for music school kids to huddle up with their buddies from ensembles and theory classes and form uber-groups, Mad Satta’s formation transpired slightly differently.

“The bassist, Ben Carr, and I met in New Paltz, NY during high school,” explains Teters. “[We] started playing together as a bass and vocal duo in 2010, then expanded to a five piece. He (Carr) met the horn players, drummer, and guitarist at Western Connecticut State University then transferred to SUNY Purchase where he met keyboardist Kevin Theodore.”

Perhaps what is most notable about Mad Satta is their ability to keep eight members of a group intact. It’s not uncommon for singers and artists to have rotating members sit in on any given gig. But as Teters explains, things are slightly different for Mad Satta:

“It’s a matter of trust and priority. We all have played and currently play in other settings and groups, ranging from reggae, punk, metal, to jazz, but we all have such a deep connection to one another and a responsibility to the group that it prevails. We have gotten such beautiful and supportive responses to our music that all we feel is the desire to keep bringing it to audiences. We also want to be able to provide what people come to our shows for, which is to see the band that is Mad Satta, not half of Mad Satta.”

With one EP under their name, Mad Satta is poised to take the scene by storm with their forthcoming LP, Comfort. Judging from their newest single, “Reach Out,” their newest album could just be one of your favorite albums of the year. Lenny Kravitz Signs with Kobalt Label Services; New Album Due Out in September

The rocker joins the Pet Shop Boys, Boy George, Martina McBride and David Gray on the Kobalt roster.

Lenny Kravitz has signed a worldwide agreement with Kobalt Label Services, which will release and promote his upcoming 10th studio album, Strut, due out on Sept. 23. The album will be released through Kravitz’s Roxie Records imprint. An upcoming Kravitz tour is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The four-time Grammy winner has sold more than 38 million records worldwide and was signed to his first label, Virgin Records, over 20 years ago. Black and White America, his last album, was released through Roadrunner/Atlantic in 2011 and sold 61,000 copies to date in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"I am looking forward to my partnership with Kobalt,” Kravitz said in a statement. “They have a passionate team that shares a high artistic view, and I am confident they that are the right partner to carry out my creative vision for this album."

Added Richard Sanders, president of Kobalt Music Group: “We are thrilled to be working with Lenny and the Roxie Records team. Lenny is in peak creative form, writing and recording what we believe is some of his best material yet.”

Kobalt launched its label services division in January of 2013 with Nick Cave’s “Push the Sky Away,” and has since expanded its roster to include the Pet Shop Boys, Boy George, Martina McBride and David Gray. Its publishing division, which has been around since 2001, has signed administration deals with a number of high-profile artists, including Dave Grohl, Maroon 5, Paul McCartney’s MPL Communications, Dr. Luke, Ryan Tedder, Max Martin, the Miles Davis estate and Skrillex.

According to Kobalt Music Group’s last revenue announcement, the company increased its gross revenues 40 percent to $175 million between July 2012 and June 2013. In 2003 he launched Kravitz Design Inc. which offers commercial and residential design services, product development and branding. Stephen Pearcy Quits Ratt

Frontman Stephen Pearcy has reportedly quit Ratt, citing “constant turmoil, unresolved business, personal attacks/threats in the public forum, and most of all, the disrespect to the fans.”

Ratt recently pulled out of the Monsters of Rock Cruise, citing the death of Pearcy’s sister. The band had earlier been at work on a new album, which Pearcy described in January as “real hardcore.”

Now comes word that Pearcy is out. “I’m very content and proud of the legacy and the music I’ve created,” Pearcy continued in a statement, via Bravewords. “This music will live well beyond any of our lifetimes. I owe no one anything but a huge heartfelt thank you for coming to the party for the last 30 years.”

This isn’t Pearcy’s first split with Ratt. He left in 1992, then was back for a stint between 1992-2000 before returning again in 2006.

He was, however, the band’s first original member. Guitarist Warren DeMartini, drummer Bobby Blotzer and bassist Juan Croucier joined in the early ’80s, nearly a decade after Pearcy began leading a series of lineups that coalesced into Ratt. Guitarist Robben Crosby, a key contributor to Ratt’s No. 12 1984 hit “Round and Round,” died from a heroin overdose in 2002. Current guitarist Carlos Cavazo joined in 2008.

Pearcy said he intended to continue forward, both in the studio and on the road, as a solo artist: “Life goes on, and the music I created will continue to be heard for years to come, despite the dark clouds that have lingered for far too long.”

Record Store Day Breaks Sales Records, Nirvana Tops Vinyl Singles

LPs accounted for more than half of all albums sold at independent record stores

This year's Record Store Day was the most successful ever for vinyl sales, which rose 58 percent over Record Store Day 2013. Additionally, independent record stores saw a 91 percent sales increase overall compared to the previous week, compared with 59 percent in 2013 and – going way back – 0.4 percent in the consumer event's inaugural year, 2008. Record Store Day 2014 also helped independent stores claim their highest weekly share in physical album sales (over 19 percent) in the 23-year history of Nielsen's record-tracking system SoundScan.

What Were the Most Anticipated Releases for Record Store Day 2014?

Vinyl as a music format broke a number of records (no pun intended) the week of Record Store Day. The format accounted for more than half of all album sales at indie stores. Forty-three of the LPs among the Top 50 vinyl albums sold that week were Record Store Day releases or released for the first time that week. Sixty-eight different vinyl album titles sold more than 1,000 copies that week, compared to 17 for the previous year's Record Store Day. The week also helped push vinyl sales up 36% over the same time last year, putting it on course to exceed 2013's record-high volume of sales.

Childish Gambino's Because the Internet topped Billboard's vinyl LPs chart for the week, and Nirvana's "Pennyroyal Tea" 7-inch claimed the highest echelon of the vinyl singles chart. Here are the top 10s for both of those charts:

New Guns N' Roses Music May Arrive 'In the Next Year,' Guitarist Says

Guns N' Roses guitarist Richard Fortus reported this week that the group was "working on stuff." "Hopefully very soon we're going to have new stuff out," he told an Associated Press reporter at the Revolver magazine Golden Gods Awards in Los Angeles. "Well, in the next year."

Another one of the band's guitarists, DJ Ashba, said that everyone in the group is a songwriter and that they have been recording ideas in their home studios and passing them to one another. They also were sharing song ideas with one another on their recent tour of South America.

In October 2012, Axl Rose said that the the group's next album "will come out sooner" than the 15 years the group took between "The Spaghetti Incident?" and Chinese Democracy. "I had to deal with so many other things that don't have to do with music but have to do with the industry," he said of the gap between records. "There's such a loss of time."

"We're going to be in Vegas all together, so hopefully during that time we're going to be able to get into the room and start laying down some more stuff," Fortus said, referring to the group's upcoming Sin City residency, which kicks off in late May.

Those shows will see the return of bassist Tommy Stinson, who had to miss the group's South American tour so he could tour with the Replacements. While he was away, founding Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan kept his seat warm, with the Golden Gods acting as his final fill-in gig.

The band performed at the event and Rose accepted the Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achievement Award, which actor Nicolas Cage presented to him. "There are infinite reasons to love Axl Rose," Cage said. "When I was prepping for my role in Ghost Rider, I took some cues from Axl's cobra-like onstage movement," an act he demonstrated. He then said he was giving the award to Rose with "great respect, awe and reverence."

"It cost me an awful lot to pay him to say all that stuff," Rose said, joking. He thanked the band, including all of its lineups, in his short acceptance speech.

The subject of the controversial biopic doesn't want production to continue after the death of camera assistant Sarah Jones.

Midnight Rider subject Gregg Allman, a founding member of the iconic Southern rock group The Allman Brothers Band, is urging director Randall Miller not to proceed with production on the controversial biopic after the tragic death of camera assistant Sarah Jones.

Allman sent Miller a personal letter asking him to not move forward with the film amid reports that the director was looking to resume shooting in L.A.

“I am writing to you as one human being to another, and appealing to you from my heart,” Allman began. “I am asking you from a personal perspective not to go forward.”

Allman says he was initially excited about the film, which is based on his best-selling autobiography, My Cross to Bear, but his feelings have changed after Jones’ death.

“When the idea of you producing the film first came about, I was genuinely excited about the possibility of sharing my story with fans around the world. Unfortunately, all of that changed for me on Feb. 20 of this year,” he wrote. “While there may have been a possibility that the production might have resumed shortly after that, the reality of Sarah Jones’ tragic death, the loss suffered by the Jones family and injuries to the others involved has led me to realize that for you to continue production would be wrong.”

Allman continues by urging Miller to not continue out of respect for Jones, indicating he should view the situation as a human being, not a filmmaker.

“Your desires as a filmmaker should not outweigh your obligations as a human being,” Allman writes. “I am asking you to do the right thing and to set aside your attempts to resume the production out of respect for Sarah, her family and the loss that all of us feel so deeply.”

Jones was killed when she was struck by a train during filming on a narrow trestle bridge in Doctortown, Ga.

Local and national authorities are now investigating her death, with Miller suspending production in the wake of the accident.

Star William Hurt, who was set to play Allman and was on set during the accident that killed Jones, has already pulled out of the project.

Rick Springfield: Rocker, actor and author discusses his debut novel, 'Magnificent Vibration,' and hitching a ride to Nashville with Rascal Flatts' Jay DeMarcus

Rick Springfield is no stranger to wearing many hats.

In the early '80s, the Australia native juggled a successful acting career—most notably playing Dr. Noah Drake on "General Hospital"—while becoming a rock star and heartthrob.

Besides the No. 1 hit "Jessie's Girl," Springfield had a slew of top 40 hits, including "I've Done Everything For You," "Don't Talk To Strangers" and "Love Somebody."

In the ensuing decades, the 64-year-old has continued to record albums—most recently 2012's excellent, rock/power-pop effort "Songs for the End of the World."

He's appeared on Broadway ("Smokey Joe's Café") and made memorable guest appearances on TV ("Californication," "Hot In Cleveland").

And more recently, Springfield added "accomplished author" to his c.v. His self-penned memoir, "Late, Late At Night," was a New York Times best-seller, and his debut novel, "Magnificent Vibration," is due in May.

In advance of his full-band show at Hard Rock Live, Springfield caught up via phone.

The interview took place during a busy week which found him in Atlanta filming the Lifetime TV show "Drop Dead Diva"—and then escaping an ice storm in the city by taking a bus to Nashville with Rascal Flatts' Jay DeMarcus, who also happens to be guest-starring on the show.

Yeah, but you know, musicians, we know each other—and even if you don't, musicians already have a mutual understanding [when they meet each other], and that's the love of music. So it's never like meeting a stranger.

What are you doing on "Drop Dead Diva"?

I play a band member who has issues with the band and they start suing each other—or he gets sued—and that's where the whole law [aspect] of the "Drop Dead Diva" theme comes in. But it's a pretty well-written script, and it was fun working on it. I like the character—it was actually a character with some flaws and issues, and so it was something I could actually work with.

You've been doing many solo storytelling shows lately. What's been the most fun doing those?

That I get to play guitar and relax a bit; I actually don't sweat during that show. [With] my live shows, I come off drenched, so it's a nice change.

They're real laid-back, and I get to tell some funny stories—or some serious, sad ones—and try and move an audience in a different manner. So that's always a real challenge, because it's just me and a guitar most of the time. It's a long show -- it's like a two-hour show, so there's quite a bit of stuff involved in it.

Have you brought anything back to your full-band shows from these solo shows?
I miss the camaraderie of the band and being onstage with guys that I like. I do miss that. So getting back to playing [with them] is like, "Oh man, this is great -- I want to do this again!"

But then also, going away and doing the solo things, it's so different and so laid-back that I say, "Well, I like this, too." So it's really a nice mix.

Kirkus Reviews had a really nice, thoughtful review of "Magnificent Vibration" already.

Which is great, because I know they love to ram on guys like me that say, "Hey, I've done this -- I think I'll be a novelist now." So they got the book, which is wonderful. This is a hardcore literary thing, and they got the story. They thought that I more or less pulled it off.

What really stood out to me was the review said that you wrote believable characters. What a compliment—especially for someone who is a songwriter, and you've spent your whole career crafting characters.

Well, I've always read all of my life. That's really what I did when I was staying away from school and why I got kicked out of school. You know, I had emotional problems and hated school and all of that.

But I'd stay home, and instead of doing drugs and playing video games or going out with friends, I'd sit home and read all day long. Unfortunately, I stole the books, but I had a whole box full of these incredible writers.

I loved horror stories and science fiction, but they're all great writers. You know, Ray Bradbury and Robert Heinlein and August Derleth, just brilliant writers that I unconsciously learned a lot about story structure [from], and I think that just stayed with me.

I had a blueprint of what a good novel should be, because I'd read so many of them.

Are there any particular characters in the books you read growing up that really resonated with you?

My favorite is Ahab in "Moby Dick." A lot of the classics, you kind of go, "Okay, it's kind of weird language -- it's not how we talk now. I get it, and I'm moved to a certain degree, but I wish it had been written in modern English."

But "Moby Dick" is the only book that I've ever read a chapter and then was so blown away that I went back and read it again before going on and finishing the book.

And Ahab's soliloquy, to me, is one of the greatest pieces of literature ever written. It's a character that's not all like the movie—I mean, you can't put that kind of depth into a movie, certainly not from the '60s or whenever it was made.

Charles Dickens, he writes incredible characters [too]. It was the same thing when I first picked up "David Copperfield." I started reading it on a set because I was bored and it blew me away. It absolutely blew me away.

How did you get in the mindset of writing your novel?

My publisher at the time shamed me into it. [Laughs.] After I wrote the autobiography, which I wrote by myself, she said, "You've got a great voice -- you should be writing fiction." And I said, "Yeah, I really want to do that, but I go do other things."

She's [also] my editor, and [we have different political beliefs]. I sent [her] something about confirming my political beliefs with the email heading of "This is just a start." She saw that and wrote me back, saying, "Oh, I thought you were sending me the beginnings of your novel." So I was really shamed into it.

I went home for Christmas and started writing there. I had some time off at Christmas, and that's all I [did] is just sit and write. It came pretty quickly.

With the fiction writing, are you finding that it's influencing the songwriting that you're doing?

I've always been really lyric-oriented, song-wise, so I don't expect that it will change it. I work on the lyrics probably more than I do the melody. I want to say the right thing and say it the best way possible, so I do really [put a focus on that].

I'm hyper-focused on the lyrics anyway. But I'll see—as I get into it, maybe I will, I don't know.

The book is coming out, you're touring and you're doing some TV stuff -- what else is on your plate this year?

Well, they're doing a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for me. But I hope to be doing more TV, and I have some scripts that I've written that we're going to start shopping around. So hopefully something [comes out of that].

It's kind of under wraps right now, but they're humor. You know, because the book is very dark humor. [Laughs.]

Do you have any good Cleveland memories?

It's a great town. I love the whole thing by the lake. That kind of blew me away. The first time I was in a hotel [here], we came in at night, and then [I] opened up the curtains and suddenly there was this ocean.

I said, "I didn't know Cleveland was on the coast!" [Laughs.] I'm from Australia -- my geographic awareness of America goes in and out. So that freaked me out.

We've always had great shows, and the crowds are always great rock-and-roll crowds. I guess there was a reason the museum was put there!

Princes William and Harry today paid homage to the king of rock n' roll Elvis Presley with a private tour of Graceland.

The princes were dressed casually and wearing sunglasses as they wandered around the white-columned mansion in Memphis, Tennessee on Friday afternoon during a visit to the city for the wedding of their longtime friend Guy Pelly and American Holiday Inn heiress Lizzy Smith.

The royal group, which also included Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, had the general public removed from the site while they took a private tour of the historic landmark where Elvis died on August 16, 1977.

Elvis Presley's Graceland mansion served as his family home throughout most of his adult life and he is buried there in the Meditation Garden.

During the visit, Harry, casually dressed in a blue polo neck, was spotted with a pair of black headphones and an orange lanyard round his neck as he listened intently to the audio tour guiding him around the 14-acre estate’s mansion.

A staff member at the visitor attraction said: ‘It is pretty special to have a future king take time to come to visit The King.’

All good fun, but questions are already being asked about the price of keeping them safe, put at £50,000 (around $84,000).

Although the cost of the trip itself is being met privately by the princes, they are accompanied round-the-clock by a team of around eight taxpayer-funded officers from Scotland Yard’s Royalty Protection Squad.

Some of those will have traveled to Memphis in advance to ‘recce’ the private residence where they are staying and the wedding venue. Others traveled with the brothers personally.

One senior industry source estimated the cost of guarding the princes during their five-day trip would be in the region of £50,000, including business class flights and hotels for all of the officers.

THE HOME OF AMERICAN MUSICAL ROYALTY: ELVIS' GRACELAND

With its white columns, rolling green acres and fountains, Graceland was the palatial home of the king of rock 'n' roll Elvis Presley.

It is located at 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard, roughly 9 miles from downtown Memphis.

The property was bought by Elvis' parents for $100,000 in 1957 as the singer's popularity grew and he needed a place to retreat from fans.

The mansion has twenty-three rooms, including eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms. Elvis adapted it to his own quirky tastes - the basement TV room is where the king would watch three sets at once, and was within close reach of a wet bar. The 'Jungle Room' is just one example at the home of Elvis' fabulously, kitschy taste.

It is one of the most visited private homes in the U.S. with more than 600,000 visitors trudging its lavish hallways with audio guides each year.

The front gate is one of its most iconic images, shaped like sheet music, with green colored musical notes and a silhouette of the king himself.

The brothers dined along with friends and family at popular BBQ restaurant Rendezvous on Thursday evening before heading home for an early night.

Young father William and newly-single Harry headed off at 11pm, leaving cousins Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie to party into the early hours at an outdoor bar.

Clearly in good spirits, Beatrice, 25, danced on a table, and could also be seen with her 24-year-old sister and other members of the wedding party drinking from plastic glasses which read: ‘Kiss Me, I’m Irish.’

It should have been a romantic trip away for Prince Harry with his girlfriend, Cressida Bonas.

But days after the couple split, Prince Harry was looking far from distraught as he was spotted dining with his brother Prince William in Memphis one day after partying at an exclusive Miami club.

Just hours before, newly single Harry, 29, had danced into the early hours of Thursday at a fashionable nightspot known as the ‘flashiest club in Miami’.

Later on Thursday, Harry looked relaxed and carefree as he climbed into an SUV in the 32C Florida sun.

With a backpack slung casually over his shoulder, and wearing sunglasses and a checked shirt, he showed no signs of missing Miss Bonas.

Carmen Lynch is an absolute riot. You won’t be able to find much about her on the Internet, so let us fill you in a bit. When she isn’t busting guts on the stage in English or Spanish (yes, she is a bilingual comedian!) she is displaying her acting and comedic chops on “Apartment C3,” the hilarious short series she produces with fellow female comedian (and roommate) Liz Miele. On October 2nd, she will be recording her first stand up album in Boston, and if you can’t seem to get enough of her with all of her comedy content, her tweets will keep you on your toes as well! With all of that going on, we are surprised she had time to sit down and answer a few questions for us. Now it’s your turn to fall in love with her!

Carmen Lynch: Hi Serial Optimist audience!

SO: Perfect! What sparked your interest in comedy?

Carmen: It was all such an accident. I moved to NY from Virginia to pursue acting. I’d never really thought of myself as a comedian, although I always acted like a goofball. I went to a comedy club in NY in mid 2000 and watched the comics onstage – they were so funny but I never ever imagined that lifestyle as an option…something you could just do. They seemed more like martians with “a gift”. Any time I was interested in anything growing up my mother’s default response was “take a class.” So I took a stand up class and I fell in love.

SO: What were your dreams and goals at age 18?

Carmen: My entire life I wanted to be a doctor. Looking back, I think I just said that to make my parents proud. But I tried it – I went to The College of William & Mary and was pre-med for a year. I thought I was brilliant because I got A’s in Biology and Chemistry in high school. Then in college I studied and got C’s. I dropped pre-med and changed my major to Psychology…which, looking back, serves me better as a comic anyway.

SO: You have hilarious presence on Twitter. On August 30th, you tweeted: “Twitter followers are like boobies. Some are fake.” What conversation or situation sparked that reaction?

Carmen:Thank you!! Twitter is fun when you’re procrastinating from real work. I’d heard about people “buying fake followers” on twitter to appear like they have a gigantic following –that many celebrities’ “millions of followers” are faux. So I just thought of a tweet based on that. But reading it now again, it sounds like I’m saying “real” people who follow twitter have fake personalities. I guess that could be true as well…

SO: How do you feel social media has helped your career grow?

Carmen: Gosh, has it? Haha. I think posting where you’re performing on Facebook and Twitter helps. You always want people knowing where you’ll be performing although it increases the chances of getting stalked. I just updated my website with a better schedule and more videos which I think helps. But this business is so self-involved it can get nauseating to always be like “me me me, here here here!” but we just have to do it. SO: Perfect chance for a plug! Speaking of Twitter, do explain the background on your feed. Who concocted that incredible art?

Carmen: Awwww. Thanks for noticing. I’ll let my niece know. She was about 5 when she did that. She didn’t know I was using it and one day I checked Twitter in front of her and she was like, “Hey I did that!”

SO: That’s super adorable. You tell jokes in both Spanish and English. Which language do you prefer to do comedy in?

Carmen: I feel like I have multiple personalities now that I’m doing stand up in Spanish. In English I’m better at talking to the audience, because I’ve been doing it for ten years. In Spanish I feel like I’m playing an instrument I haven’t played in a while, because I used to speak in Spanish all the time as a kid and I’m re-working that muscle. I can’t say I prefer one more than the other – I love the ease of doing it in English and the challenge of doing it in Spanish. One day I hope to do it all in Spanglish.

SO: Do you tailor your writing shows you know will be more heavily Spanish based compared to an American base, or do you find your jokes and humor work for both audiences?

Carmen: I absolutely have to tailor it. Sometimes I don’t know what it’s going to be like until I get to that country. I just got back from a comedy festival in Costa Rica and stand up comedy is VERY new there, and after the show someone said, “You talk about yourself on stage? Wow.” They weren’t used to the autobiographical side of comedy yet. Standup is highly evolved in New York, and not so much in other countries where people are just starting to tell jokes on stage. So I have to scale back a little on sarcasm and do the simpler punch lines. It feels a little strange to go back to older material I don’t do anymore, but since it’s in Spanish it all sounds like a new joke.

SO: If you had to make a creative argument for the best coffee shop in New York, which would you choose and why?

Carmen: How did you know I liked coffee so much? I’m going to guess from the picture on my website. In New York, “Joe” has great coffee. So does “Cafe Grumpy”. When I’m lazy I’ll just drink instant…yes!! I do!! But that just makes real coffee taste that much better.

SO: You and Liz Miele create and star in a series called “Apt C3″ online. How long have you known Liz and what made you two begin this venture?

Carmen: Liz stalked me until I’d be her friend. I sometimes have a hard time trusting people, so my standoffishness and her aggressiveness made a great match. We were bored (true story) in our apartments the night of Hurricane Irene (Aug 2011). The subways were down and Liz was making dinner for me and our other roommate Chris. Chris and I were recording something silly in the apartment and then we suddenly said “Liz, get in here!” and that’s how we developed Episode One of Apt C3 (appropriately called “Hurricane Irene”).

SO: The both of you are also recording a comedy CD on October 2nd in Boston. What made you choose that venue to record at?

Carmen: Liz didn’t want to record in Spain so we had to do it here, in America. We basically wanted to be near a city but not necessarily New York since we’ve both performed here for most of our comedy careers and wanted a fresh batch of comedy viewers. We’d both heard great feedback about the Improv Boston from comedy friends and the size of the venue seemed perfect. But the second CD we’re doing in Spain. In Spanish.

SO: What can your fans look forward to from your CD?

Carmen: Hopefully I’ll say stupid things at the taping that even I’m not aware of yet. And a few dumb pictures. I want this CD to make people laugh while they’re driving. Not like laughing so hard they crash, just laughing at a stoplight. I picture that and it makes me happy.

Interview with brother-sister duo Jesse & Joy

The first video for their ¿Con Quién Se Queda El Perro? album, has garnered over 50 million views on Youtube. Their current single La De La Mala Suerte is the No. 1 song in Mexico, which is no surprise, but it is also in the Top 10 in U.S. Just who is this mystery group? Jesse & Joy. And although they may be a household name in the Latin music, millions of Americans have never heard of them. I asked the brother-sister duo about this and what it's like to go from a world of being mobbed at grocery stores in Latin America to slipping into total anonymity when they're in the U.S., their plans are to change all that and so much more.

What does it feel like to be such a huge star in Latin America and yet many Americans haven’t heard of you yet.

Jesse: It’s funny in a way, you know, because even though we sing in Spanish our mom is from the States, right? So, we grew up listening to like Johnny Cash, Carole King, and Neil Young. Our next step is to do an album in English so Americans can know who Jesse and Joy are. Right now we’re like 100% focused on Who Gets to Keep the Dog? That’s the name of the album in Spanish. We’re just starting the tour right now in Mexico, we’re starting the promotional tour in Central and South America, the U.S., and then also we’re going to go to Spain.

For those who don’t know about your rise to success, tell us about it.

Joy: It’s been almost 7 years of career here in Latin America, which is probably easy to say but it’s been a lot of work and it’s finally paying off around the world. It’s been an amazing ride so far. We started writing when I was 15 and my brother was 18, and after that we realized we really liked it a lot. When I was 18, and he was 21, we signed with a record label. We weren’t actually looking for it. It kind of fell into our laps, and we took it as a sign from the universe or destiny.

In Latin America you can’t even go to a grocery store without being mobbed. What is that like?

Jesse: We’re the same brother and sister that we used to be. We just get mobbed sometimes at the grocery and stuff like that, but we try and focus on the music and try to do better every time. It’s funny, we keep enjoying what we do even a bit more than we did at the beginning of our career. We feel grateful for the things that happen around the music we do. We just keep on rocking, keep on having fun on stage and playing. The only thing we want to do at the end of the day is pick up our guitar and do what we love to do.

Who would you love to work with musically on a song that you haven’t already?

Joy: If it’s a wish list, trust me, would be really long. Probably, James Taylor and Carole King. We grew up listening to them because of our mom. We had very different cultures growing up, and my mom would put those on along with The Carpenters, Johnny Cash and with my dad we would listen to a whole different type of music. As far as contemporary, I love Coldplay and Sarah McLachlan.

Let’s talk a little bit about your new song, Corre, which is beautiful and I love the video but why does he have to die in the end? Why?

Jesse: That’s the same question that the director asked us when we told him the plot of the video because the whole story, we came up with it, and he’s like, “There’s something that I don’t understand, why the guy dies at the end?” And we’re like, “We just want to give this twist to the story,” and sometimes life is just like that. You know, it’s just the rawness of life. I think that has to do also with the relevance of the views of the video not the fact that he dies, but the fact that it’s so possible.

How does a song begin with the two of you? I mean, do you come up with the lyrics first or the music first, or how does that happen?

Jesse: We have this system in all our chaos. I do the music concept and between the both of us, I show Joy the music and then we let that put us in a mood. Either that or we have an idea of a theme in particular or we’ve just had this experience that we want to talk about and we do the lyrics between the both of us.

There are a lot of artists who will be reading this interview and they really want to be where you are but they’re struggling right now. Maybe a lot is going on in their personal life, or maybe they’re struggling just to decide between Ramen noodles and a bus ticket and they really want to make it. So, what are your words of advice and wisdom and encouragement for those people?

Joy: I think it’s very important to never lose sight of what you want and to truly believe in yourself, you know? Because if you believe in yourself and you do things from the bottom of your heart at the end of the day, that’s something that we’ve been doing. It’s not that it’s my way or the highway, but if you truly believe in something and you really put your heart into it and things will work out.

She's a little bit country. He's a little bit rock 'n' roll.

It figures, doesn't it? But musical siblings Jesse and Joy Huerta, who'll be chasing a Grammy Award on Sunday in the Latin pop album category, differ from Donny and Marie Osmond in more ways than one.

For starters, there's the dual-language thing. Born and raised in Mexico City, Jesse, 28, and Joy, 26, grew up switching back and forth between their Wisconsin mama's native idiom and their Mexican papa's mother tongue.

At home, their mom, an English teacher, insisted, "I don't want any Spanglish. Speak either English or Spanish." Jesse y Joy (to use their proper showbiz name) now swing between the two cultures as naturally as migratory birds cruising the North American flyway.

Then there's the point that the "country" music Joy grew up learning to love was as likely to be Pedro Infante as Johnny Cash. Her parents dug it too.

"They would sing in the house, just for fun," Joy said over breakfast with Jesse earlier this week at a West Hollywood hotel. The duo had flown in from Mexico City, where they both live. "My mom would harmonize for my dad and vice-versa. Pretty corny. We were like, 'Oh, God, stop, please!'"

Their mother's vinyl collection also exposed the kids to Aretha Franklin, James Taylor and Carole King, infusing their consciousness with the ultra-mellow, keyboard-centric, singer-songwriter sensibility that's become their hallmark.

It's no coincidence that their third album, "¿Con Quién Se Queda El Perro?" (Who Gets the Dog?), which won last year's Latin Grammy Award for contemporary pop vocal album and is in the running on Sunday, concludes with an English-language, note-faithful cover of John Lennon's "Imagine." Their rootsy, soft-rock sincerity evokes '80s country-pop, and Joy's dulcet-but-earthy voice has been compared to those of Norah Jones, Alanis Morissette and, almost inevitably, Kelly Clarkson.

In other ways, though, the Huertas, who also won last year's Latin Grammy awards for song and record of the year for "¡Corre!" (Run!), bear a resemblance to other famous musical blood-brother-and-sister acts.

They've been close since childhood — "best friends almost," as Joy puts it.

They received a good Christian raising at the family's Mexico City evangelical church, where they had permission to play the instruments when services weren't being held.

"Before we got to the point that we could play with real instruments we used to play with tennis rackets and hang them with belts, as if it was a guitar, or buckets, and just play back to Creedence [Clearwater Revival]," Jesse said, with a laugh.

They are impossibly wholesome and ridiculously nice — footnote: their dad teaches theology — attributes that don't always go in tandem with pop stardom.

And they are preternaturally in sync with each other's thoughts, often completing each other's sentences and sometimes showing up at an interview or recording session inadvertently wearing look-alike blue-and-white-striped shirts, jeans and shoes. Although Jesse is married with two young daughters and Joy is single, they still see each other nearly every day.

"Sometimes I'm with his friends and he's with my friends and they just say, 'Man, you just made a comment your sister made two days ago,'" Joy concurred. "So it's kind of weird. But this same complicity exists whenever we're playing. It's just a matter of a look and we know, 'You know what, don't go to the full chorus, let's cut it in half and just go to the end.'"

The sibling synchronicity began paying off with the release of their 2006 debut album, "Esta Es Mi Vida" (This Is My Life), which reached the top 20 on Mexico's album charts and yielded a hit single, "Espacio Sideral" (Outer Space).

Their second studio album, "Electricidad" (2009), somewhat less earnest and more polished and experimental than its predecessor, sold well in the United States and Latin America. But the Huertas felt they'd strayed a bit and resolved with their third album to get back to their essence.

So they went to work with London-based producer Martin Terefe, whose client list includes Cat Stevens and Mary J. Blige. With Jesse once again writing the music and both siblings contributing lyrics, the Huertas wanted the new record to capture the analog-era warmth and intimacy of a live performance.

"For us, and the type of music that we're making right now, we just wanted you to feel that you press 'play' and then go watch us live and get that same sensation as being there in the room with us," Joy said.

Jack White Details Hologram-Filled 'Lazaretto' Ultra LP

Special edition vinyl features two hidden tracks and song that starts on inside of record

"While we were mixing the record, I started to get some ideas on the design of the LP and what we can do differently that hadn’t been done before," Jack White says in the latest promotional video for his upcoming new album Lazaretto.

Judging by what's included in the album's "Ultra" LP, White's ideas were plentiful. To start, vinyl junkies will be treated to two hidden tracks pressed underneath the center label of both sides. The under-label grooves are the first of their kind, and they'll play at 78 RPM on Side A and 45 RPM on Side B, making the Lazaretto "Ultra" edition possibly the first ever three-speed LP.

As White and his Third Man cohort Ben Blackwell demonstrate in the video, which you can watch below, Side A of the Lazaretto "Ultra" LP will also start on the inside of the record and play until it hits what they believe is the first ever locked groove on the outside edge of the LP (locked grooves themselves are nothing new, as White points out, with the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's containing one of the more famous ones). Side B also contains its own locked groove on the inside edge.

The opening track of Side B, "Just One Drink," was cut with two grooves and, depending on where you drop the needle, will play either the song's electric or acoustic intro before the two ultimately converge to meet the rest of the song.

Even when the Lazaretto "Ultra" LP isn't playing music, it's doing something unique: When you look at the dead wax area of Side A from a certain angle, you'll be able to see a hologram of a spinning angel. The angel illustration, which fits with those on the Lazaretto cover, was hand-etched into the production masters by Tristan Duke and is the first of its kind on a vinyl record.

To top it all off, audiophiles will be pleased to know that the "Ultra" LP was mastered tape-to-tape without any sort of compression. The special edition vinyl will also feature a completely different track sequence from the digital or CD version, as well as alternate mixes of a handful of cuts.

Lazaretto, and all its trimmings, will see release on June 10th on Third Man Records and Columbia (and for those who pre-ordered the album through the Third Man Vault, don't worry, your vinyl will contain all the "Ultra" LP features). White is also set to embark on a massive tour this summer, which starts May 29th in Tulsa, Oklahoma and includes stops Governors Ball, Forecastle and Bonnaroo.

Roy’s vocals were found on a previously unheard Roy Orbison/Bill Dees work-tape, originally recorded on a boombox cassette player, and meticulously stripped out for this extraordinary new recording. Produced by John Carter Cash and engineered by Chuck Turner, the “The Way Is Love” vocal was taken to Johnny Cash’s Cabin studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee in 2013, using the newly discovered Roy Orbison vocal as its core. Realizing a life-long dream to record with their father, Wesley and Roy Jr played guitars on the song with Alex handling the drums and all three sons bringing background vocals to the mix. “Cutting a track with my brothers was more incredible than I can describe,” said Alex. “I have been looking forward to this for my entire life.” Roy Jr. noted that “More or less the reason Alex and Wesley and I are musicians was to play in Dad’s band when we got older” and Wesley summed it up nicely, “I think we really got something special.”

Everyone involved with Mystery Girl sensed the magic in Roy Orbison, who, in 1988, was enjoying a full creative renaissance and resurgence of popularity. One of Roy’s classic recordings, “In Dreams,” memorably lip-synched into a hurricane lamp by Dean Stockwell, had served as a key thematic element in David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet,” igniting a renewed interest in the Big O.

In a series of bold aesthetic moves, Orbison directly addressed his legacy, first with Class of 55 (a 1986 reunion album with fellow Sun Records alumni Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins) and then, In Dreams: The Greatest Hits, where Orbison recut many of his biggest songs, using 1980s technology to produce results often surpassing his original recordings.

At this same time, Roy Orbison became a founding member of the Traveling Wilburys, the roots rock supergroup also featuring Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty. It was during work with the Wilburys that the vision for Mystery Girl, a new Roy Orbison album made of original songs from a variety of writers–including Roy Orbison, Diane Warren, Elvis Costello, Wesley Orbison and U2′s Bono and the Edge (among others)–began taking shape.

“When he sang it, it was absolutely magnificent,” said Jeff Lynne, who would produce tracks for Mystery Girl. “His voice, I had never heard a voice like that live, you know, in the studio, ever…. He had this wonderful spirit, almost like a kid in many ways.

He was just a happy guy. I love him…. One of the proudest things I’ve ever done is to have become his friend. I’d look at him and just go, ‘Wow, it’s him. The Big O.’”

Roy’s core group of musicians on the original Mystery Girl recordings included Jeff Lynne (guitar, piano, bass, backing vocals), Tom Petty (acoustic guitar, backing vocals), Mike Campbell (guitar, bass, mandolin), Jim Keltner (drums), Howie Epstein (bass, backing vocals), and Benmont Tench (piano, organ, cheap strings). Contributing artists on the album include Barbara Orbison, Roy Orbison, Jr., Al Kooper, George Harrison, Bono, T Bone Burnett, Steve Cropper, The Memphis Horns, and more.

“I was just taken by how amazing this guy was. Just sitting, singing softly, sitting on the sofa with an acoustic guitar, his voice was unbelievable.” remembers Tom Petty. “The music will live on, you know; it’s very timeless music.”

Mike Campbell added, “Any time I hear one of Roy’s songs, wherever I am, I just stop and listen to it and he’s there, you know. His artistry and his voice and his spirit and the depth of his soul is so unique and it just connects with you in such a deep way…. He just had a way of getting into your heart.”

“He was a real innovator, truly a great singer,” said Bono. “The real rebels to me always had manners. Elvis, you know, and Roy, Roy was a true gentleman. And that’s a scary thing in a man, do you know what I mean? A man that’s so sure in himself that he can be polite.”

The legendary guitarist Steve Cropper confided that, “I’ve only met basically three, maybe three-and-a-half, of what I call ‘light bulbs’ in my life. And what I mean by ‘light bulbs’ is they’re the brightest one in the room and when they walk in the door every head turns. Every head. Not just a few, not some people still talking in the corner. It’s like everyone stops what they are doing. Elvis Presley, Otis Redding and Roy Orbison. And I saw that happen to Bill Clinton. So, there you go and I’ve never seen that happen to anybody else, ever.”

Eminem will become the first rapper to play Wembley Stadium

Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, will play Wembley Stadium in July after he wasn't approved to play a concert in London's Royal Parks. The Real Slim Shady singer will become the first rapper to headline the 90,000 capacity venue in what will be his first London show since 2001.

Telling the Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, Eminem said the gig, which is on July 11, would be a one-off and that he won't be doing any lengthy tours, but instead focus on single concerts on a grand scale.

The 41-year-old was offered the Wembley gig after he found out he wouldn't be allowed to play in Hyde Park this summer: "It's made me even more excited to play in London this summer. The easiest way to get me to do something is to tell me I can't do it.

"Thanks to the Royal Parks for making it all possible for Wembley."

Aside from his headline gig at Milton Keynes Bowl in 2003, Eminem's only UK dates have been at festivals over the past 13 years, despite achieving a chart-topping album with his last record, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, in September 2013.

Wayne Henderson dies at 74; Jazz Crusaders co-founder, trombonist

Wayne Henderson, a trombonist, composer and co-founder of the Jazz Crusaders, who became a powerful force for merging the sound of jazz with elements of funk, soul and R&B, died Friday at a Culver City hospital. He was 74.

His death from heart failure was confirmed by manager Stephanie Pappas.

During a decades-long career, Henderson was best known for his work with the Jazz Crusaders, an enduring presence on the Los Angeles jazz scene since its debut recording in 1961.

Backed by tenor saxophonist Wilton Felder and keyboardist Joe Sample, Henderson wrote one of the band's signature compositions in the zig-zagging "Young Rabbits," a propulsive blast of hard bop that justified the band's early comparisons to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.

The group later earned its greatest success after shortening its name to the Crusaders as Henderson helped forge the groove-heavy sound of contemporary jazz and fusion into the '70s and beyond.

Born on Sept. 24, 1939, in Houston, Texas, Henderson began his musical life while attending Houston's Phyllis Wheatley Jr. High School with classmates Felder, Sample and drummer Nesbert "Stix" Hooper. The childhood friends eventually came together as a band, cycling through names such as the Black Board Jungle Kids, the Modern Jazz Sextet and Nite Hawks before moving to Los Angeles in the late-1950s to eventually perform as the Jazz Crusaders.

Drawing from an early exposure to R&B, blues and gospel music, the Jazz Crusaders honed a unique sound led by the fluid front-line horns of Henderson and Felder. "We were just straight, stand-up beboppers, playing all the fast tunes," Henderson said of those early days in a 1997 interview with The Times. "But we always had a groove and memorable melodies. Then we got to where we were just playing grooves."

The group freely drew from the pop songbook as well, breezily covering the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" as readily as Jackie McLean's "Appointment in Ghana." By the early '70s the group dropped "Jazz" from its name to become the Crusaders with the addition of electric bassist Robert "Pops" Popwell and guitarist Larry Carlton.

The group's dance-ready direction spawned a string of crossover pop hits during the decade, including Henderson's "Keep That Same Old Feeling" and "Scratch."

"We were the co-creators of funk music," Henderson told the Kansas City Star in 2006. "Other guys started the jazz-funk thing, too -- Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Hancock -- and we started selling records just like the pop guys. And we kept the integrity of the music."

In 1974 Henderson stopped performing and left the Crusaders to focus on the production side of the music industry. He worked with a number of high-profile artists across the musical spectrum, including Ronnie Laws, Ramsey Lewis, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers and Joni Mitchell.

More recently, Henderson played in a number of reunions of the Jazz Crusaders. He helped spearhead the reunion in 1995 after listening to the group's old albums.

"He realized we were all at that age where any one of us could possibly go," Sample told the Houston Chronicle before a show in 2011.

Henderson is survived by his wife, Cathy, and two sons, Wayne Jr. and Randy.

Comedian Ian Edwards will release the first album under the Team Coco banner.

Conan O'Brien is launching a record label.

The first release under the Team Coco comedy record label will be a stand-up album from comedian Ian Edwards, 100% Half Assed, recorded at the La Jolla Comedy Store on Mar. 8. The album will be released in June.

The new record label is intended to shine a spotlight on up-and-coming comedians while also giving them creative control and a bigger stake in the release success.

Since the 2010 debut of TBS' Conan, O'Brien has featured numerous stand-up comedians on his late-night program. Team Coco also has produced several comedy specials, including Team Coco Presents: The Conan Writers Live, and highlighted comedians on Conan After Hours, which is hosted by The Pete Holmes Show host, Pete Holmes.

Edwards currently is a writer on CBS' Two Broke Girls and recently began his own podcast, Soccer Comic Rant, on the podcast network All Things Comedy. He was a supervising producer on Adult Swim's Black Dynamite season three and previously wrote for NBC's Saturday Night Live and Carton Network's The Boondocks.

Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie talk about collaborating ahead of the band's upcoming tour. "We've been working very closely together, so there is a freshness."

It appears that Christine McVie will be returning to Fleetwood Mac to do more than play some old songs in concert. The group -- sans Stevie Nicks, who was busy with "some other commitments," according to Lindsey Buckingham -- has just finished a nearly two-month run in Studio D at the Village Recorder in Los Angeles, where Fleetwood Mac made 1979's Tusk album, working on a batch of new songs by McVie and Buckingham.

"This has kind of been a project in slow motion, that's the only way I can put it," Buckingham tells Billboard. "We got in the studio not knowing what to expect, and the chemistry was just unbelievable... We got eight tracks very far along, like, 75 percent done. It just played out really organically in a way that seemed appropriate." Buckingham says the new songs came from ideas McVie brought into the band, and coupled with material he worked on previously with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, the group has "about 14 or 15 things, and some other things we want to get to down the line" even before Nicks begins making contributions.

"We're all very excited about it. Knowing me, I'm going to be pushing for a double album," Buckingham says with a laugh.

Describing the new songs -- which include "Carnival Begin," "Red Sun" and "Too Far Gone" -- McVie says, "There's a wide variety, starting from sort of blues-based songs to very commercial songs. It's very, very exciting. We get chills when we hear them. They sound really fresh. There's an element, I guess, that hasn't really existed so much in the past although it has been there in the fact Lindsey and I have been collaborating more. We've been working very closely together, so there is a freshness and obviously there are parts for Stevie to sing on all of these songs, which she will do eventually."

When the rest of the world hears them remains up in the air, however. Fleetwood Mac released a four-song digital EP in April of 2013, and Buckingham and McVie say they don't expect to have a new album ready before the group's upcoming tour starts September 30 in Minneapolis.

"We haven't finished what we've done here," McVie explains. "These are just tracks with some overdubs, and they're certainly not finished. I go back to England now until the beginning of rehearsals, which is the end of July, and then we're rehearsing and then we're touring, so we won't really have time to [finish the songs]. There's some talk about some time next year. Fleetwood Mac always take a long time to make a record -- you know what."

Buckingham concurs, though he acknowledges that there may be a bit of clamor for the new music once word of the sessions leaks out, which may effect the timetable for the material's release. "We want to plant some seeds of awareness about what we're doing," he says. "We won't want to pretend it doesn't exist. We're very proud of it, and we do want to get the word out. But we'll have to see how much clamor there is by the time we get into rehearsal and we have some time to let these seeds grow and see what kind of interest there is. That may inform our decisions one way or the other."

Buckingham, meanwhile, says he's particularly stoked that making new music is part of McVie's return after a 16-year absence. "It just took on a life of its own for sure," he says. "For years I was telling everybody, 'Y'know, she'll never be in the band again. She's gone.' I really believed that. But right now the whole thing has really got such a circular feel to it. And if you're talking about one more act for this play or whatever you want to call it, I can't think of a better way to do it."

Fleetwood Mac formally announced McVie's return in January after she joined the group on stage in London last September. McVie -- who released one solo album, 2004's In the Meantime, during the interim, but mostly spent her time as "a retired lady of leisure with the Range Rover and the dogs" in rural England -- has gone through therapy to overcome a fear of flying that was one of the reasons he left the group. And she promises that she's back in Fleetwood Mac "for perpetuity, yeah. For as long as I'm around. I'm here. I'm committed." And she adds that returning to the studio with the group was like getting back on the proverbial bike.

"I thought I was going to get nervous coming in the studio, but it's felt very easy and natural," she says. "Before I got to L.A., Lindsey and I had been ping-ponging ideas on computers and that; I'd send him my very, very rough, funky demos and he made some kind of sense out of them and sent them back to me with him playing guitar and they started to turn into really lovely ideas. I really missed playing with them and the chemistry of it all and started to really, really desire to start doing something again, and the only people I could think of that I would have any desire to do anything with would be them, Fleetwood Mac."

The Hollywood Walk of Fame committee chairman David Green announced next year’s list of honorees Thursday at a ceremony where Jennifer Lopez received her honor, with Tupac Shakur and Phil Hartman set to be lauded posthumously.

In the film category, those scheduled to receive a star in 2014 are: Orlando Bloom, Ray Dolby, Sally Field, Jack Harris, Jessica Lange, Matthew McConaughey, Liam Neeson, Paul Mazursky and Tom Sherak.

In TV, Dabney Coleman, Kaley Cuoco, Claire Danes, Giancarlo Esposito, Deidre Hall, Cheryl Hines, Don Mischer, Tavis Smiley and Hartman are set to be honored.

Recording stars include Katy Perry, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Rick Springfield and Shakur.

With a name hand-picked by Steven Van Zandt, the band of '70s hitmakers will release debut album on Aug. 5.

In the 1970s, hitmakers from the previous decade formed supergroups to continue on the arena circuit. In 2014, a quartet of hitmakers from the '70s is looking to get back to the garage and play straightforward rock 'n' roll.

The Cars' Elliot Easton, Blondie drummer Clem Burke, Romantics lead singer Wally Palmar and Chesterfield Kings bassist Andy Babiuk have formed the Empty Hearts, enlisting the assistance of Faces pianist Ian McLagan and Ramones producer-engineer Ed Stasium on their debut album. Savoy Label Group's 429 Records will release The Empty Hearts on Aug. 5, which will be followed by an October-November tour of the U.S.

Babiuk, whose '60s-inspired Chesterfield Kings released its three most recent albums on Steven Van Zandt's label Wicked Cool Records, was looking for a music project beyond the Kings a few years ago. He was working with Van Zandt on the David Chase film Not Fade Away, securing all the '60s musical equipment when he shared his idea with the E Street Band guitarist.

"I hadn't talked to the other guys because I was still formulating the idea. It was 'Remember when we were kids and more inspired by the Stones, the Beatles and the Kinks?'," Babiuk tells Billboard. "That vibe when you just have fun? Wouldn't it be fun again? That was the promise and it's still the cardinal rule of the band."

The first call was to Palmar, who was touring with Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band. He was in, then Burke followed quickly and brought along Easton. The band members, all products of the same generation, knew each other from sharing concert bills, playing together and hanging out; all those empty promises of "working together someday" came true after they did some demos of songs Palmar and Babiuk sketched out.

Pleased with the initial recordings, Burke called Babiuk in March 2013 to say he had a break from Blondie and had booked a flight to Rochester, N.Y., and that they would record the album in his studio. They cut the record in five days.

"Ed [Stasium] would have us run through the songs and he'd make some adjustments in the arrangements and say now we're gonna cut this," Babiuk says of the working system. "If you make a mistake, you have to throw in 20 bucks. I think four or five songs were done in one take. Having the four guys in the room, that energy, really comes through in the record. When a band is playing music and having fun, people can sense that, and that's when it catches on."

Throughout their brief existence, they had struggled to find a name. Internet searches on the good ones they created wound up taken and they eventually turned to Van Zandt to see if he had any ideas.

"He had a list of 20 kickass names and we looked up the ones we liked and somebody was using it," says Babiuk, noting they were legally advised to be cautious with regards to a name. "About three weeks later I get a text from Steven. 'You guys are going to be called the Empty Hearts.' I copied the text to other guys and said 'any of you want to argue with Silvio Dante?' It was a name nobody was using."

The Empty Hearts recorded without a deal or with little sense of whether the recordings would ever be released. They signed with manager Jonathan Wolfson (Daryl Hall & John Oates, Loverboy), who shopped the album, eventually signing with 429.

"We didn't want to worry about that," Babiuk says. "The only thing they asked was that we keep it under wraps. I think we've done a god job keeping this a secret."
