Im not sure what I think about this track.. I'm not loving it. I loved her early albums, but this isn't pulling me in at all.

Change it one more time..

The video clip has been removed, but I was able to stream the single elsewhere. It's surprisingly very good. I say surprisingly because I've been very critical of Tori Amos' work the last few years thinking that while her albums are still finely crafted, the magic that made me a big fan was all but gone. However, this song has that magic. It reminded me of why I was so in love with her music throughout the 90s. Hopefully the rest of the new album is in the same vein.

Great song! This is my most anticipated release and tour of the year. I know people are down on her recent releases, but I love almost everything this woman has released. She's an underappreciated genius! I think people take her for granted because she releases stuff so often.

I love all her albums. Obviously some resonate with me more than others, with ADP and Strange Little Girls being my least favourite, but every single Tori album is worth owning without exception.

Her last album Night Of Hunters was a triumph of an album. And the much maligned The Beekeeper is also a very under-appreciated gem.

Hah, American Doll Posse is the later period album of hers I liked the most. Here is how I rank her studio albums:

Little Earthquakes
Under The Pink
To Venus And Back

Boys For Pele

American Doll Posse

Gold Dust

Midwinter Graces

from the choirgirl hotel

Abnormally Attracted To Sin

Night Of Hunters

Scarlet's Walk

The Beekeeper

Strange Little Girls

Wow.... can't believe you would put ADP over Choirgirl. Different strokes for different folks I guess.....

This is how I would rank her albums:

From The Choirgirl Hotel
Boys For Pele
Scarlets Walk
Night of Hunters
The Beekeeper
Little Earthquakes
Abnormally Attracted To Sin
To Venus & Back
Midwinter Graces
Under The Pink
American Doll Posse
Strange Little Girls

Different strokes indeed Matty! I never thought I'd see any Tori list without her first two albums even in the top five. Wow.

More power to you, however, as her more recent work needs to be appreciated more than it is. I still think you're nuts right enough. wink

I love Little Earthquakes to death, and hell, maybe I take it for granted because, well, it's Little Earthquakes. I never go to put on songs like Precious Things, Crucify or SATY simply because I've heard them so many times and seen them live so many times. They're still incredible songs and the album probably deserves to be in my top 5, but it's just too overplayed for me.

As for Under The Pink, well, that album has never really resonated with me like her other albums. Granted Cornflake Girl is a gem, and I quite like God and Past The Mission, and parts of Yes Anastasia.... but the album as a whole always struck me as a tad pretentious compared to her debut.

i'm not offended on first listen, that's saying something these days when

previewing new tori amos music.

lol

seriously though, i've been curious about this project since it appeared

on the horizon. it's said to be 'piano-centric' again so that's exciting.

also, the promotional art, although kind of "smh" is a real step up from

the last decade or so. gone are the weird theatrical dresses and at this

point in time her face actually resembles tori amos again.

/

so all in all, the signs are good: more piano (although this single is not

really reminding me of early amos as much as it reminds me of SW),

her face and artwork looks more simple and honest. and i think some

of the people she worked with since post-SW are not on board for this

one, so who knows, it could be really good.

/

i'm liking the new single, as an album track. but as a lead off single it

makes me anxious that the rest is going to be pretty bad again. and i'm

soooooooo hoping i'm wrong and it will be a great album because i'd so

love another tori amos album that i enjoy from start to finish (or at the

very least one that has more than 2 decent tunes).

/

my list:

/

01. From The Choirgirl Hotel

02. Boys For Pele

03. Under The Pink

04. Little Earthquakes

05. To Venus And Back

06. Scarlet's Walk

/

i don't even listen to the other albums anymore at all, just made a 10

song compilation from all of them together.

/

her b-side catalogue is still one of the best by anyone. so many strong

and brilliant songs there. the "a piano" boxset was cool too. and i did

like those "official bootlegs" she released.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

The only album by her I really don't like is Night of the Hunters. I'm not saying it's objectively bad and I can see the talent went into making it, but I'm just not into the purely classical sound. The other album I'm not as crazy about as the others is Strange Little Girls, just because I really want to hear songs she wrote because she's a great songwriter. The covers she chose were interesting but none of them were really my favorite songs of all time.

That's kind of how I feel about from the choirgirl hotel. "Spark" might be in my top three favorite Tori songs and the singles "Jackie's Strength" and "Raspberry Swirl" are also excellent, but album tracks like "i i e e e" and "She's Your Cocaine" are like scratching nails on a blackboard. Half the album I love and the other half I really don't care for at all. There's no middle ground.

SO TRUE! THIS! I hate how maligned that shit is...it's comfort food for the soul.

And anyone who hasn't given the studio disc portion of VENUS AND BACK is sorely missing out - that shit was so head of it's time. Spacey synths, electro jam, EQs as instruments - fine pop writing...what a monster that one is/was...

also i love that Kate Bush is selling out like 800 concerts in 5 minutes, in England.

Has Kate EVER publicly said anything about Tori, to anyone's knowledge, esp about her biting her style? ever? quotes?

I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

'The Power Of Orange Knickers' is just a wonderfully melodic piece of music, and for that alone I'd have bought 'The Beekeeper'.

Plus people can't believe the song title when I play it. lol

There are some similiarities between Kate and Tori obviously but I don't think you can say they are exactly the same. In some ways, Tori's music is more eclectic incorporating more of a full band sound and some electronics especially in her later albums. Kate Bush didn't invent the piano. Tori studied classical piano from a young age so it was only natural she would think to base her songwriting around that with a semi-classical influence, not because she was consciously copying Kate Bush.

Although, I am not a Tori fan at all, I think this song is good. (I don't like her singing voice and I can't watch her perform because I feel like I'm watching a complete nervous breakdown each time I have seen her.)

I pretty much got off the Tori train after Boys for Pele. I listened to the first two albums pretty heavily for awhile, but BfP never really clicked for me. I got Strange Little Girls, but didn't listen to it enough for it to even leave much a memory now. I probably should give stuff a listen... those two albums meant quite a bit at the time.
