Runway Baby! Bruno Mars disembarks his private jet as he arrives in Sydney for sell out shows after cancelling Brisbane gigBy LAURA EVANS | He's a musical heartthrob who's sold millions of records worldwide. But even American pop phenom Bruno Mars isn't immune to sickness. After cancelling his Brisbane performance due to an unnamed illness, the 28-year-old star touched down in Sydney on Friday, where his Moonlight Jungle Tour shows, scheduled for Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, were proceeding as normal. Touching down: Pop crooner Bruno Mars landed in Sydney on Friday, the day he cancelled his Brisbane performance for his Moonlight Jungle tour Cutting a solitary figure the handsome singer, known for his super star razzle dazzle, looked subdued as he kept his head down as he disembarked his very own private jet. Wearing chunky black shades, a skull and cross bone black trucker cap and a leather jacket, the normally vivacious singer (real name is Peter Gene Hernandez) didn't raise his gaze and kept his lips pursed. His sombre demeanour matched his outfit, which was all black apart from a splash of yellow on his T-shirt, with his metal chain hanging low from his side. The Billboard 2013 Artist of the Year had to put the breaks on his sold-out gig at Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Thursday, rescheduling the performance for a week later. It's a jungle out there: The singer songwriter is touring across Australia before heading off to New Zealand and Asia Rock the mic: The 28-year recently performed at the BRIT Awards where he took the gong for International Male Solo Artist He took to Twitter, apologising to fans on Thursday saying: 'Brisbane! I'll see you in a few days. Being sick sucks but ill make it up to you. Thank you for understanding.' But his recovery was swift on Friday he told Sydneysiders: 'Alright I'm back! pheeww. Sydney!! Tonight we party!' The BRIT award winner is currently touring Australia, already having performed in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, before he heads of to New Zealand, Asia and finally ending in the UK. Mars first burst on to the international music scene with his 2010 album Doo-Wops And Hooligans which spawned the hit singles Grenade and Just The Way You Are. His follow-up album - Unorthodox Jukebox - was just as big a hit for the soul crooner, scoring him a GRAMMY for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 56th Annual Awards in January.

Bruno Mars’ mom: ‘I knew he was special the moment he was born’In this unpublished 2011 interview, the pop superstar’s late mother, Bernadette Bayot Hernandez, reveals how she raised six kids, one of them a Grammy winner, and how going back to their Filipino roots made them even closerBy Tatin Yang WE ARE FAMILY Bruno Mars, his mom and siblings at am.a.m.a earth event The first time Bruno Mars performed here was in April 2011. Watching the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter thrill the crowds in Manila and Cebu were his Filipino mother Bernadette “Bernie” Bayot Hernandez, his sister Jaime and other family members. Inquirer Lifestyle had the opportunity to interview Bernie about raising her children in Hawaii with Filipino values, working hard to make sure her kids’ dreams were realized, and making peace with tattoos. She and Bruno were obviously very close, from the way she talked about him. When he lit up his first electronic cigarette, he tweeted that he was quitting the real thing for his mom. She was the first girl he wrote a song about; his first composition, “I Love You Mom,” was recorded when he was only 4 years old, with lyrics that go, “My mommy helps me with my voice/ ’Cause a superstar singer is my first choice/ I love you, Mom, you are my favorite girl/ I love you, Mom, you’ll always be my favorite girl.” In June last year, Bernie unexpectedly died of a brain aneurysm; she was only 55. When Bruno received another Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for “Unorthodox Jukebox” two months ago, he dedicated his win to his mom: “Ma, I know you’re watching, I hope you’re smiling, I love you.” Below is the unpublished interview with Bernie, along with her daughter Jaime: At first glance, Bernadette Bayot Hernandez is your typical Filipino mom. Her bag is bursting with knick-knacks and family photos, complete with a big bag of pastillas as her baon, which she presses into my hand and insists that I try. Facebook confounds her, and she calls her daughter when she needs a photo e-mailed or when she wants to see her Facebook account, which her kids made for her. She was horrified when her son got a tattoo, and occasionally begs him to stop adding tattoos to his body. It’s a scene we’ve encountered with our own moms, except that Bernie’s tattoo-happy son also happens to be Bruno Mars. Tell us how you ended up in the US. Bernie: We’re a big family. I have six brothers, and my mom was worried about us growing up, especially since my dad was the only one supporting us. My grandmother was a US citizen; she petitioned for us to join her… We were on our way to San Francisco to be with her, but had a stopover in Hawaii. It reminded us so much of the Philippines that we never made it to San Francisco. This was in 1968. I was 10 years old then. How did you end up back here? Is this your first time to be home? I was here 15 years ago. When Philippine Airlines was asked to be a sponsor for Bruno, Vivienne Tan, PAL’s EVP, knew that we were Filipino-Americans and wanted us to be the first family to be brought in under her pet project. She had people search for a way to get in touch with us, and my brother, John Valentine, who is also an artist, had a website, and they got in touch with him to ask if they could sponsor our family to fly back under this project. What is this project about?
It’s PAL’s new drive to bring back Filipino-American families to come visit, get in touch with their roots, and maybe check and see if there’s anything they can do to give back to the country. When we were invited, I was really excited and grateful. I even told them my dad was an employee of Philippine Airlines before we moved to Hawaii, and they were surprised. PAL flew nine of us—myself, my mom, my brothers John, Lawrence, Douglas, Christopher, John and Franklin, and my daughter Jaime. It was really generous of PAL; I can’t thank them enough. What places have you visited so far? My whole family and I were invited by (Cebu) Gov. Gwen Garcia to perform for the inmates at the Cebu Penitentiary; we all sang for them, which they enjoyed since it’s always [been] them doing the entertaining. My brother John even wanted me to do the hula, and I said he was out of his mind! So your whole family is into music? Yes, our whole family! My dad was a singer, my mom a dancer, so we really got all that talent. My dad used to sing to us when we were little. All my kids sing. All my brothers sing. Every time we get together, there’s always music, that’s why when karaoke came along, which was also around the time Bruno was born, he had to fight for that mic. At age two, he just wanted that microphone, always. Were you the one who taught Bruno how to sing? I don’t know if we taught him exactly, but he was always surrounded by music. So it was automatic for him. Bruno, I knew he was special the moment he was born. I would like to say that he came out of me holding a mic, but of course that wasn’t the case! But he was singing even before he started talking.
I bought him a piano when he was just two, and he went on the piano and just started playing tunes, not just banging on it, but he’d play actual tunes! He started performing professionally at four, he’d be onstage five nights a week with our group—Bruno was the cherry on the cake, he was our finale. He’d impersonate Elvis, and Priscilla Presley actually hired him to open for a tribute to Elvis in Memphis. Elvis’ estate rarely gets impersonators but when they saw Bruno, they got him to open for the event. They paid for everything and gave us a tour of the house. We hear Bruno has a tattoo of your name on his arm. Tell us more about it. When he was a kid, he was afraid of needles, but when he moved to LA, I didn’t know all these tattoos were happening. When I saw my son, I was all, “Why did you do that? Please, Bruno, don’t put any more tattoos, you have such beautiful skin, why are you gonna ruin it?” And then he lifts up his sleeve and says “Aw, but what about this?” It was my name, and it was the full name, that’s long! And I said, “Well, okay, that one’s all right.” What changes has fame brought to your lives? It hasn’t changed our hearts, but the attention takes a little getting used to. I still work, but many people drop by the house, and it gets busy, and they’d ask me, “Why are you still working?” And I’d reply, “Well, what do you want me to do?” We’re all the same. So you still work? Yes. That’s all I’ve been doing all of my life. This is the first time that I’m actually not working, because of Bruno. He keeps telling me to relax, so I’m here, just enjoying it. What was it like raising six kids by yourself? It was tough, but I did it. I was a single mom. I cleaned houses—everything—just to make it work. I sewed, sold paintings. I don’t know how I managed it, to tell you the truth. How did you feel when Bruno won his first Grammy? I was there at the Grammys and he was nominated for seven awards, and he won the one I wanted him to win. It was kinda surreal, we couldn’t believe it. After he performed that night, he received a standing ovation, and to see that, that was incredible. Is that my son? I can’t believe it. You mentioned a charity that you had. What is it about? Jaime: We started an organization called m.a.m.a earth—the mama stands for Mothers About Making Amends. We like to focus on grassroots organizations that need help, like the last one we did for Haiti where we helped set up a birthing center and installed a water system that lets them operate 24 hours. We want to be able to tell our donors where their money went exactly, versus donating to bigger organizations where you can’t really pinpoint what happens to your donation. It gets closer to the heart that way, I think. What are you planning to do here in Manila through m.a.m.a earth? Jaime: We were thinking of a way how to help, and Social Welfare Undersecretary Celia Yangco brought us to an orphanage with blind kids; she said they were in need of educational materials, so we’re working on a way to help them. Bernie: We really want to focus on moms and children, especially after seeing the inmates in Cebu. I mean, with the husbands in jail, who’s looking after the kids now? Your affinity to family is evident in your choice of charity work. You really grew up close to each other? Bernie: Yes! Sometimes, a little too close! I remember though, that even when we were still here, my dad would always bring home hungry kids we didn’t know. They’d beg for money but my dad didn’t believe in giving money, he’d rather bring them home and feed them. So, I got that habit, too. Whenever I see a hungry kid, I melt. I would give my last dime for a hungry child. The kids near our hotel now, they’d come running to us every day, and we’d feed them, give them pizza and candy. I was raised that way, and I want to continue that tradition of helping. Jaime: And toothbrushes! My mom wanted them to brush their teeth after eating all that candy! What else have you done here, aside from that? Jaime: We visited Resorts World, that was beautiful. From Cebu, we got a taste of the tropical vibe. I want to go back and see all the islands. Any shopping? Bernie: I like a bargain, I’m a smart shopper. I’m a seamstress, too, so I don’t buy many clothes. But I’m dying to go to Greenhills and buy some beads, since I make jewelry, too. Tell us more about raising your kids the “Filipino way.” Bernie: I taught my kids how to be polite, well-mannered. Coming from a big family, my mom was very old-fashioned, and I learned to carry over what she taught me. I’m so proud of my kids, they turned out so well. Jaime: Coming back here, I realize now that I came to be this way because of my grandparents and family. The things taught to me, I see here, like respect for others, especially elders. That’s something you don’t see in other places. Everyone’s so nice and warm, very welcoming and hospitable, and I intend to raise my kids the same way.

Bruno Mars hip-thrusts his way through super-sexy Sydney showHe came, he saw… he moonwalked. A Bruno Mars-type moonwalk so smooth, front-row fans struggled to sit through the Motown sounds of the pint-sized pop star at his Moonshine Jungle show in Sydney. Which resulted in a sweaty mosh pit and lots of empty seats. Kicking off with sexy support act Miguel (who we learnt has a penchant for the F-bomb), Bruno's jungle-themed jam-fest was exactly what we expected… smooth and seductive, yet full of sparkles. With signature vest in tow, the R&B superstar took a leaf out of Pharrell's book of style… by hip-thrusting alongside his charming bunch of New Orleans-style entertainers, in a hat.
Smashing out upbeat tunes such as 'Treasure' and 'Marry You' to old-school classics like 'Ignition' and 'Pony', Bruno managed to excite each and every age group that filled the Qantas Credit Union Arena with their squeals and screams. The highlight for us? The high-energy 'Billionaire/I Need a Dollar/Money (That's What I Want)' medley, that had busker-style written all over it. And also had us reaching for our small change… Although known for his bells and whistles, that's not all Mr Mars presented to us on our pop-hungry platter. A raw moment saw the star break down mid-performance of 'When I Was Your Man'… while women in the crowd shot steely glares at their unromantic counterparts. Like a total pro, Bruno finished up his musical feast with a megaphone and siren… all before scooting and swishing his way off the stage as gold glitter confetti covered the energised audience. And while we rated the jam-packed performance as one of the best we've ever seen, we have one suggestion for the musical man. Bring pole-dancing 'Gorilla' vixen Freida Pinto out for the next concert… it'll stop the gents from whinging about their drooling girlfriends. Other than that, we liked Bruno 'just the way he was.'

Review: Bruno Mars, Brisbane Entertainment Centre, March 13, 2014
HE MAY have been a few days late, but last night Brisbane fans forgave Bruno Mars for his tardiness. The Grammy Award-winning artist was originally scheduled to play in Queensland last week, but an unnamed illness saw the only Queensland show on his Moonshine Jungle Australian tour postponed until last night. If the American singer-songwriter was still suffering the effects of his mystery ailment, none of the 13,000-plus crowd at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre seemed any the wiser. The pint-sized pop star delivered a high-energy masterclass in old-fashioned showmanship that had the audience eating out of his hand. He and his impeccable band delivered a string of chart-topping hits including Just the Way You Are, Grenade and Locked Out of Heaven, mixed with covers of contemporary and old-time favourites. The main man is small in stature but huge on talent, yet he’s also confident enough in his own abilities to afford his many talented band members their own moment to shine. His nine-piece group accompany Bruno with old school Motown coordinated dance moves, and when the horn section isn’t required they become able backup singers. In the days of manufactured pop Bruno Mars showed just why he’s widely considered “the real deal.”

Reviews of the March 15th concert in Auckland, Australia New Zealand Bruno Mars at Vector Arena reviewOnline Reporter Sunday 16 Mar 2014 7:51a.m. He's the self-proclaimed 'original hooligan' and at Auckland's Vector Arena on Saturday night, Bruno Mars doo-wop'd his way through the Unorthodox Jukebox album - with a few little surprises - as part of the Moonshine Jungle tour. It's Mars' second trip to Auckland, following the Doo-Wops and Hooligans tour in 2011. Looking dapper as ever and embracing the retro showmanship we've come to expect, Mars opened the show with the album's title track 'Moonshine', followed by pyrotechnics and the song about that gold-digging b*tch 'Natalie' (Natalie, if you're reading this, you should know Mars is looking for you), and the groovy 'Treasure'. Non-stop from start to finish, the sell-out crowd were also treated to 'If I knew', 'Show Me' as well as old favourites 'Billionaire', 'Grenade', 'Just the way you are' and 'Marry You'. Somewhat confusing for Mars' younger fans but no less enjoyable were his renditions of 'Money (That's what I want)' and R Kelly's 'Ignition Remix' - I overheard one tween whisper to her friend "I'm not sure which album this is from". Highlights included 'When I was Your Man' - a song Mars conceded was the hardest for him to write and is still the hardest to perform, as well as 'Runaway Baby' and the silly but relatable 'Lazy Song'. The only lowlight for this reviewer was the sheer amount of cellphones in the air at any one time - honestly, how did we all enjoy concerts before we could snapchat the entire thing to our friends who weren't there? The Auckland leg of the Moonshine Jungle Tour wrapped with not one but two encores and more pyrotechnics; 'Locked out of Heaven', preceded by an impressive solo by Mars on the drums, and the naughty 'Gorilla' which includes the lyrics "I got a body full of liquor, with a cocaine kicker, and I'm feeling like I'm thirty feet tall" and "you and me baby making love like gorillas" - given it was an all ages gig, I wish the parents of the numerous under 10s luck in explaining that one. Mars proved that as his popularity has grown, so too has his stage presence and at the culmination of the tour, ensured he left it all out there in the arena.
Concert review: Bruno Mars, Vector ArenaBy Bridget Jones 10:45 AM Sunday Mar 16, 2014
Moonshine is often an unknown quantity; a bit risky, it does funny things to people. Sometimes it's dangerous. Grammy winner Bruno Mars was never going to be a public threat, but his Moonshine Jungle Tour at Auckland's Vector Arena did work the crowd into a frenzy. Opening with Moonshine, which was quickly followed up with Natalie, Treasure, and a hefty helping of pyrotechnics, Mars ensured the packed- and loud - crowd were kept on their toes on this, his second visit to New Zealand. Billionaire, Runaway Baby, Marry Me, Grenade; the favourites from both of Mars' albums came thick and fast during the hour-and-a-half set, barely giving anyone time to catch their breath. He made covers sound like new songs - and many in the young audience probably hadn't heard Bam Bam, Money (That's What I Want), or Ignition. At least Rihanna covered Ginuwine's Pony recently. Mars is a showman. Not only can he write a bloody catchy pop song - and sing it impressively - but he puts on a spectacle. His Motown-styled band are more than back-up musicians in the shadows; while Mars is obviously the star, the camaraderie, playfulness and some marvellous synchronised dance routines involving everyone on stage creates a wonderful sense of fun not often found in a show this slick. It's a shame though, considering how far he's come in terms of showmanship and obvious clout in the industry (the staging for this tour is up there with the biggest stars) that many of the comedic "set pieces" were rehashed from his previous tour here. But that was just a passing blip on what was an impressive night of entertainment. If I Was Your Man was a stand-out moment; just Mars, a dimmed spotlight and a piano, singing what he called the hardest song he has ever written. But the first of two Auckland Moonshine Jungle shows wound up on a high - two encores, a drum solo from the singer, and the hits Locked Out of Heaven andGorilla, which was the perfect, slightly naughty end to an all-ages gig where the boundaries were given a nudge. Earlier Miguel, the guy behind Mariah Carey's latest hit Beautiful, was impressive, if a little over the top for some of the younger audience members. Dressed like George Michael in his Faith days, the talented singer pushed the envelope with his t-shirt lifting, microphone-grinding performance which was punctuated by screams from eager audience members. Don't be surprised if he's headlining his own show soon enough. Bruno Mars, Miguel

Bruno Mars Leaves Down Under In A “Frenzy”
Bruno Mars and his Jungle Men continued grooving through their Moonshine Jungle Tour, wrapping up the Australia/New Zealand leg with a sold out Saturday Night crowd at Auckland’s Vector Arena – A crowd that Grammy winner Mars and his very capable band worked into a “frenzy”, according to the New Zealand Herald. Following an illness that forced the rescheduling of last week’s Brisbane show, Bruno Mars appeared fully recovered and completely rejuvenated, the New Zealand fans sending Mars off to the Asian part of his tour with a uniquely spirited Kiwi farewell. To finish off his second visit to New Zealand, Mars opened with “Moonshine”, “Natalie” and “Treasure”, setting a wicked pace that had fans roaring off into a raucous show. The Jungle Men – the band “behind” Mars – are actually anything but, the eight-piece Mowtown-influenced ensemble playing and interacting with Mars right out front, whether it be the dance routines or playful interaction, creating a cohesive magic that makes the American star shine all the brighter. The stage was bedazzled with heart-thumping lighting and pyrotechnics, this technical supporting piece also standing out on its own but complimenting the exquisite showmanship of Bruno Mars. While the staging was first-rate and said to be right up there with other top acts from around the world, The Herald’s reviewer did note that, “many of the comedic ‘set pieces’ were rehashed from his previous tour here.” At the same time, the reviewer quickly wrote this off as a minor flaw in an otherwise “impressive night of entertainment.” Mars continued into the hour-and-a-half set with favorites, “Billionaire”, “Runaway Baby” and “Marry Me”, nicely covering much of his work from recent albums. And speaking of covering, Mars’ cover songs didn’t disappoint, the performers making songs like “Bam Bam”, “Money (That’s What I Want)”, and “Ignition” sound like “new”. Of course Mars’ huge hit, “When I Was Your Man“, was a pivotal highlight of the show, Mars alone with the piano beneath a soft spotlight, his amazing talent clearly evident while playing what he calls, “the hardest song he has ever written.” The Moonshine Jungle tour and Bruno Mars are now off to Asia, their first stop being in Bangkok, Thailand. This March 20, 2014 show at Bangkok’s Impact Arena is SOLD OUT, so if you’re hoping to score some Bruno Mars tickets for a March show on the Asian leg of the Moonshine Jungle tour you should include the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore or China in your travel plans. Along with the Moonshine Jungle Tour, Bruno Mars has other artistic items on his palette, including being featured with Janelle Monae on the soundtrack of the animated feature film, “Rio 2″. The song, “Welcome Back”, is performed with Monae. Mars also voices a character in the film, Roberto, who is a childhood friend of the main character, Jewel, played by Anne Hathaway. Besides Asia, where Bruno Mars’ talents take him next is anyone’s guess. By the way his career is currently firing, Mars continuing into the stratosphere is a pretty good bet.

Bruno Mars smashes box office record at Vector ArenaDelaunay Enterprises, FuseworksMarch 18, 2014, 11:26 am
Bruno Mars, who performed two sold out Auckland concerts as part of his Moonshine Jungle World Tour last weekend, will leave New Zealand with a string of glowing reviews, public adulation and a new Vector Arena box office attendance record tucked under his Panama hat. In April 2011 the Grammy award winning, multi-platinum, RIANZ #1, superstar played his first ever arena show at Auckland’s Vector Arena to around 6,700 people - less than three years later Mars returned to perform to more than 23,500 ecstatic fans. Live Nation is thrilled to announce that the final New Zealand performance by Bruno Mars has broken Vector Arena’s house attendance record for a concert in ‘end stage’ mode, with 12,142 fans in attendance. The previous record has stood since May 2009. New Zealand media has heaped outstanding praise on Bruno Mars’s Auckland concerts: *…he’s one of the most flawless performers I’ve witnessed. I’ve gone home with a new respect for Mr. Bruno Mars…big ambition, huge show. Jake Ebdale / Rip It Up *I may be biased due to the dancing, lighting, and glitter, but I’m calling Bruno Mars and the Hooligans as one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I kind of wish it had never ended. Alice Hunt / Coup de Main *Mars is a showman. Not only can he write a bloody catchy pop song - and sing it impressively - but he puts on a spectacle. Bridget Jones / NZ Herald Billboard's 2013 Artist of the Year, Bruno Mars is a critically acclaimed singer, songwriter, producer and musician. The 18-time GRAMMY nominee and multi-GRAMMY winner has sold over 130 million singles worldwide. His current album Unorthodox Jukebox and his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans have a combined certification total of 74-times platinum worldwide. According to Billboard, Mars scored his first five Hot 100 No. 1s faster than any male since Elvis Presley.
