New Jack City and Boyz N The Hood soundtracks

1991, the year hip hop exploded worldwide...

There had been "rap" movies before but somehow Bozs N The Hood and New Jack City were the first full mainstream rap films. I bought both OST's back then and still listen to them surprisingly quite often for records I've had for 22 years!

BITH is by far my favorite movie of the 2 (I don't even like NJC so much anymore), and it's kinda the same with the OST's.

NJC's OST has good moments and some really nice songs and it still is really nicely representative of the sound rap had in 1991, but the songs selection is just OK in my book. Don't get me wrong, I really like to listen to it but I'm not blown away. On the other hand I'm totally in love with the OST of BITH. Starting with that killer Ice Cube song and, from beginning to end, bringing the best shit hip hop had to offer in 91. It's kind of my ultimate hip hop album of all times, rivaled in my heart only by Material's Intonarumori from 1999 (a collaborative east coast rappers effort supervised by Bill Laswell).

Anyone still listens to these 2 soundtracks? Any feelings u wanna share about 'em? And which one of the 2 is your favorite? Thx 4 sharing smile

They were both played a lot in my household (in cassette form I might add lol). I give the "Boyz" soundtrack the edge also, but they both do the films justice, which is what's lost nowadays as far as film soundtracks are concerned. The soundtracks were anticipated almost as much as the movies lol

hmmm Despite the similarities, I'm not sure this is the best comparison. I definitely prefer the New Jack City soundtrack, but the vast majority of its best tracks are R&B not hip-hop. There's a better spread on Boyz N the Hood, but I'd say its best tracks are hip-hop.

I picked NJC because it features some of my all-time favorites by quite a few artists ("I'm Still Waiting" by Johnny Gill, "I'm Dreamin'" by Christopher Williams, "(There You Go) Tellin' Me No Again" by Keith Sweat, and "New Jack Hustler" by Ice-T) as well as some impressive debuts ("I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd and "Facts of Life" by Danny Madden). The title track isn't one of Guy's best, but I always liked it. Add in the medley of 2 classic songs by LeVert, Troop, and Latifah and you have a very strong nucleus for the album.

This. But even though my pick is for NJC....Tony! Toni! Tone!'s "Just Me & You" has always been a favorite of mine.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
