Pharrell Breaks Down Songwriting Process and Claims, "Anyone Can Do What I Do!"

The two questions are:

Is it true?

Did we know that already?

First of all, that was an EXCELLENT interview! Thank you for posting it!

Second, although he did close with "Everybody can do what I do", if you read the entire article you will see that he might have over-simplified that a little, LOL.

Any chimp in the zoo can write a song today and have it be a smash hit. And the lyrics don't even have to make a lick of sense. It doesn't take any talent whatsoever.

I agree - great interview, thanks for posting, and yes he's over-simplifying. And I didn't know he could be so articulate and thoughtful.
Interesting that he has synesthesia. It's true that many synesthetes are creative people, but many have a pseudo-synesthesia, meaning it's developed. And many if not most creative people are not synesthetes at all. I have developed it in certain contexts. I suspect that Prince has developed it, but was not born with it. There is a difference. As pharrell says, true synesthesia is when two or more senses are cross-wired and not pruned, and it is a learning difference (or, "disability"); a developed synesthesia is when you are neurologically normal and "learn" cross-wiring (and for most who learn, it's very easy to do; in other words, it's either easy for you to do it, or very hard, and it enhances your intellectual abilities instead of seeming a "disability").

As a songwriter, yes anyone can do what Pharrell does.

Fortunately for him his talents lie in production.
