Teddy Riley Sues Lady Gaga Over Royalties

November 03, 2013

Lady Gaga is reportedly being sued by R&B singer/producer Teddy Riley. Riley co-produced ''Teeth'', a track from Gaga's 2009 EP The Fame Monster, and is now claiming he was promised 25% of the songwriting royalties.

Riley, a member of US R&B groups Guy and Blackstreet as a well a songwriter-producer, is said to be seeking $500,000 in owed royalties plus punitive damages.

Earlier this year, Riley sued his daughter Taja for copyright infringement and fraud for trying to claim that she co-wrote '‘Teeth.’' Riley said that she lied about the songwriting credit and should not have received a publishing deal from EMI Music.

Teddy Riley is a Grammy Award-winning producer who has worked with everybody in the music industry including Boyz II Men, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Brown and the late Michael Jackson.

Attorneys for Lady Gaga has no comment on the lawsuit.

I'm pretty sure in the credits Taja was the one credited for the song, not Teddy.

But it was obviously Teddy because it sounded like "No Diggity" part 2 lol

How did his daughter receive credit for a song she didn't co-author? I find the whole thing rather puzzling.

In the mid 1970's, James Brown sometimes put his daughters name (who were under 10 years old at the time) on his songs to get around the publishing companies and/or taxman. In the old days it wasn't uncommon for people that had nothing to do with writing songs (ie. managers, record company heads, mafia guys, singers, etc.) add their names to the credits. Many of the Lennon/McCartney songs were written separately, but they made an agreement to credit both. Some writers might co-write but leave their names off of songs (or use a fake name) because they don't want to be known, or if credited they might be sued because they're under a contract with another company. The Cadillacs' manager Esther Navarro registered the songs the members wrote under her name only, as she was ripping them off. People have added family members or friends to credits to help them out financially. Then there's ghostwriters who work for a salary/fee who are not credited at all and 'songwriters for hire' who might be credited but don't get royalties as the songs are owned by another party (publisher/record label). It doesn't really matter who did or didn't actually write songs, but who is registered at the copyright office.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

i think in the "normal" processes of the industry, it would take that long for the royalties to actually pay out if there was an intention to pay him, so after the 4 year mark, he's out to get his share. i ain't even mad, madonna 2.0 is PAID, so cough up the loot!
