I was in my twenties during the seventies and while some people like to think of the seventies as some wonderful period of pop music there was also a lot of bland crap. Jim Croce made bland crap. I foolishly thought when he died that would mean an end to his crappy songs. Boy was I wrong. If only I could erase Time in a Bottle from my memory. Eccchhhhh.

I read Jim's biography a few months ago. It was written by his widow.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I was in single digits during the seventies--I liked him. Still do, I guess. However, I really love the typo part way through your post about hoping there would have been "an end to his scrappy songs." Nope, they're just too scrappy to beat--you knock em' down, and they just keep coming at you. Kind of like Jim, I guess. Or Leroy Brown--I particularly liked the sort of freedom that song gave me to sing about "the baddest man in the whole DAMN town"--I managed to both whisper and shout that word at the same time... I wasn't exactly allowed to say it, I could just kind of get away with it. Or maybe I was allowed--I just never tried to cuss except within songs. I might have been allowed to say anything I want, really. Maybe I should have tried it.

I bought this 2CD used in the summer. I had a hits vinyl, but it got ruined last year. It's a great collection with all the hits and more:

Jim Croce - 50th Anniversary Collection

Different strokes for different folks...

I saw Croce at the Old Town School of Music, just him and his acoustic. Far, far, from crappy or sappy. (IMHO)
