Stevie Wonder side projects and outtakes

Hi there!

-----

I'm a great fan of Stevie Wonder's music. So far, I have listened to all his recording output, but I'd like to ask the Wonder huge fans on the .org for guidance relating his side projects and his unreleased songs. So my question would be: which albums should I get in order to obtain a good knowledge of Stevie's recorded collaborations, songs he has written for others, and outtakes? (Regarding bootlegs, any discussion will be wellcome: if we simply discuss titles and contents, we won't break the .org rules. biggrin )

-----

You know, my question would be similar to the one a Prince fan would ask if he knew all Prince albums but wanted to know The Time, The Family, Jill Jones, "Manic Monday" or the bootlegs like The Work.

-----

So far, I have only listened to Wonder's albums for Syretta and Minnie Ripperton, and of course his most well-known collaborations with McCartney, Michael Jackson and Prince.

-----

I guess my question is a BIG one, but I hope it may lead to an interesting discussion. biggrin

Here's an old thread that might be a little help.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I don't know about bootlegs, but here's a Youtube channel with unreleased stuff. A lot of it is snippets though.

A lot of the stuff he's written for others is out of print and can only be purchased used. Some of it has never been released digitally on CD or digital stores like iTunes or Amazon.

iTunes has a really good collection called The Complete Stevie Wonder - it includes all of his studio albums, three live albums, multiple singles, b-sides, remixes, live tracks, duets and rarities. It's a great set, even if you own a lot of the studio albums already.

Hunting and pecking is really the only way to go for finding all the songs he's written with/for other artists. Some of them are big hits you may already have (Tell Me Something Good, Let's Get Serious, I Can't Help It, Until You Come Back To Me, Tears of a Clown, It's A Shame).

Probably wouldn't hurt to find a live recording torrent site because there's a lot of live music of his there as well.

There hasn't been much Stevie Wonder music released the last decade or so. He's put out A Time To Love, and done a LOT of collabs with other artists - both with vocals and harmonica - but hasn't done much as far as releasing older material of his or releasing his own solo material. I record a lot of his appearances on TV myself and listen to the audio. He did a great show last year for the UN in New York with lots of guest artists. He was in really good form.

Re boots, I have two live performances from 1973 or 74 that are pretty mind blowing. One is a 30 minute TV performance live in studio from the German show Musikladen, the other is I think from the Rainbow Theater in London. Both were easy to find & definitely essential listening.

Certainly an amazing catalogue.

Let's hope he releases some of the new projects he is said to be working at. This year I've had two huge surprises with the new albums of David Bowie and Prefab Sprout, two of my favourite artists, and it'd be great if Stevie released something new. I'd particularly love to hear the gospel album he projected to release in tribute to his mother.
