I'd say love was a magical thingflame I'd say love would keep us from pain...
I always hated that whoever transcribed these lyrics, always used the incorrect word "thing." Love is not a "thing" that would inflict pain, like "flame" from a fire could!

Isn't "love is a thing" correct? There is a song "What is this thing called love?"

I have the Music From The Edge Of Heaven album and it has a lyric sheet. It has "thing", not "flame". But liner notes are not always correct though.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

True, but what does that have to do with this George Michael song, and the context in which he uses it?

As stated above: "I always hated that whoever transcribed these lyrics..."
I know this. Just because the lyric sheet was wrong, doesn't make it right. It is clear by his words, the context of what is causing his intense pain, and by reading his lips...the correct word is "flame."
Alas, the only sure way to find out, is to ask George himself.

Thanks for the correction! I hate misquoted lyrics so I'm embarassed by my own crime.
This will always be my favorite George Michael song. I made a thread about it back in '07, the year it turned 21. I believe George wrote it when he was 21.

My favorite song by him/Wham. Makes me cry and reminds me of someone I loved dearly.
I used to not consider this my favourite track by him but these past few days I've been bawling my eyes out to it. I really do think it might be my favorite by him now,
