Okay, so I just caught up to that ridiculous Robin Thicke/Miley Cyrus "duet", and I learned two things.
A) Miley Cyrus must have a thing for ecstacsy.
B) Robin Thicke can't sing live... He was so far off key it was confusing to hear.
That's all for now.
G..........u just now figured that out?
Well honestly, I haven't listened to him at all until I heard about Marvin Gaye's family lawsuit against him. Then I heard what I believe to be a solid case against Robin Thicke.
Even with whatever pitch correction was used on his recordings, I still wasn't impressed. Eric Benet is a far better singer in that style.
Then I watched that mess from the VMAs... couldn't even tell what the key was.
This guy is so far overrated... but then again, most all singers and MCs have been overrated since like 1998, so... U know what I'm sayin'.

When he was doing something positive no one paid attention. Now that he is perceived to be dishonest(negative), people come out of the woodwork like roaches when the lights are off.
I've been to many of his shows and his singing was fine. I can't speak to last night because I didn't watch him sing but perhaps he had an off night.
He's a pop singer. I don't expect him to be George Michael or Luther Vandross. If we are talking about famous people who can't sing, we may be here a while.
Yeah I was surprised everybody's talking about Cyrus' "twerking" but nobody's is talking about how badly off-key this boy was. Actually, not even off-key, in a completely different key. Or two.
Usually when that happens, it's a technical/sound issue - the singer can't hear him/herself, or the backing track. I'm guessing it was pretty loud out there, so it might be that (they usually wear ear monitors). That said, I've never been that impressed with him either.

It's not like I'm a fan of both, but in all fairness, yes Eric is a stronger vocalist than Robin, but Robin is a better songwriter and musician (Evolution and Something Else are nice, enjoyable albums, although they do sound like an audition tape for the late Marvin). Time will tell whether this whole Blurred Lines episode is a brilliant career move or career suicide for Robin.

I'm pretty sure it was something like that. Plus he could have had a cold or something. Considering he usually sounds anything but bad and I have seen him live in a small venue, I would definitely not say he can't sing.
I've been to his shows before. He's not a bad singer and I've always enjoyed his concerts. But
Him being off key the entireperformance was likely him not being able to hear himself or the music properly from his ear monitor. It happens.
What's more cumbersome than this particular performance though, was his choice of MONOPOLY Jailbird ensemble that was supposed to pass as a suit...that, and the fact that he's one good meal at the Ivy away from developing Child Bearing Hips attempting to wear aforementioned attire.

Not the best looking attire in the world, no... He should have stayed in the black suit he wore before the show!
I had to look at the trainwreck again and now I'm definitely convinced the man couldn't hear himself! He didn't sound bad, just totally off key/too loud.

How is he overrated? He has been releasing stuff for years and now he finally has a hit, let him enjoy the moment. I don't think he sounds bad live actually.

Right, the guy has been releasing stuff for over a decade yet never had a major hit like now. Hardly any of my friends know/knew about him so it's not like his been that big of a name.

I agree; he always sounds fine during his live performances. There were tons of sound issues during the VMAs, he wasn't the only one who sounded "bad." JT sounded like crap and he's a douch whose always on key.

He's fine as hell so for all I care he can wear his house curtains as a cape and still look super fuckable.

I've heard him sing live perfectly fine before. the mashup sucked and so did the overall sound. it;s easy to find him singing well...if you want to. Is he the best singer ever...um. No. But way better than that performance.

He's had big hits (Three #1's on the R&B Chart). I know because its the R&B chart, some people may tend to dismiss those accomplishments and say his first big hit was "Blurred Lines" because it's his first #1 Pop song. It's like saying the only "hit" Teena Marie had was "Lovergirl" because it was her only song to reach the Top 10 on the Pop charts. But, we all know Lady T had big hits before and after that song. But, again, some people may dismiss those successes because they were on the R&B side of the charts.

That's what I was thinking. Blurred Lines is his first hit like Word Up was Cameo's first
hit.

Yep! I was never really a Robin Thicke fan. I still say his best song is "Magic". But, after doing a little research recently regarding his Billboard chart rankings, I was quite surprised to see most of his songs doing so well on the R&B side but not so much on the Pop charts. "Sex Therapy" was #1 on the R&B charts but couldn't even manage to crack the Top 40 on the Pop side? Wow! He really is the male version of Teena Marie. It's going to be interesting to see if he will be successful where Teena wasn't by following-up "Blurred Lines" with another huge single that does well on the Pop charts.

Maybe for people who like a certain type of music like R&B he had some hits, for the big public he really didn´t. Most people don´t even care about a R&B chart or a rock chart or whatever.
I think most people didn't even know him before Blurred Lines.

Yeah, I noticed that it seemed to be in a different key, and not one that worked. I agree that it could have been a monitor issue.

Agree. He def wasn't a household name like Timberlake has become one. None of the ppl around me (who weren't in the biz) had a clue who he was before BL. Funny thing is, my friends actually thought BL was Prince

Excuses. I've seen this guy live from the front row.

He just isn't good live.
...and back in the mid to late '90s, I saw Eric Benet in the tiny State Of The Union club on U St in D.C., and he nailed it live. That was back when his "debut" album, 'True To Myself' had just come out... his best album by far.
I am surpised by everyone's reaction to Miley.... she didn't have anything to shake anyway. But no one said anything about Ga Ga being half naked. I'm not complaining either way but JT was the best of the night. I also enjoyed Katie Perry.
And HECK YEAH Eric Benet is a better singer.
The lawsuit with Robin Thicke....to me just the intro part of the song reminds me of Marvin Gaye. As a whole it doesn't. But there are others that sound similar that Gaye's estate needs to jump on for money.

Yep. And even being big on R&B myself, he only really hit it big with three songs and one of them was number-one but most of his other songs were quite forgettable. BL joins Lost Without You and When I Get You Alone as his most memorable.
