I applaud Stevie and I support his decision. However, and don't take this the wrong way, but Stevie hasn't performed here (Florida) in about 10 years anyway. I think this boycott will have more of an impact if one of these superstars of today like Jay-Z, Lil' Wayne, or somebody gets behind this thing.

clapping I admire Stevie from the bottom of my heart. I adore him as a musician and as a person. Honestly, he should win the Peace Nobel Prize. I even like "I Just Called To Say I Love You", so you can imagine the extent of my admiration.

Every time I think it's impossible for me to love Stevie Wonder more, he proves me wrong. Good for him -- and yes, more artists need to join this boycott! They did it in South Africa during apartheid!

And I see all of your creations as one perfect complex

I wonder if Stevie Wonder called Prince to join the boycott playing in states with the "Stand Your Ground" law would Prince do it. I'm listening to the Montreux Jazz Festival version of "Dreamer" where Prince sings "21st Century and race still matters-NOT GUILTY!" and he sounded so indignant. It would be cool to see that.

I hate hate hate when people bring this up. Stats are just numbers without their context. Example, statitics show that men have a statistically higher chance of being committing some kind of sexual crime towards a child or person who isn't of legal age. Does this mean that ALL men need to be treated as such? No, it's wrong.

I think this is silly.

There are flaws in the law system of every country that extend beyond the relatively limited cases of 'stand your ground laws', and thus if one really wants to be an advocate for political change, one wouldn't be able to perform anywhere.

er

So what if you live in Florida, love Stevie's music and totally agree that the verdict is wrong? He's hurting his own fans with this and it's not going to bring about a political change. Bad idea.

I heard he hadn't performed in Florida in years nor did he have anything scheduled.

He's bringing attention to a serious problem...similiar to the way many artists refused to play South Africa in the 80s,because of apartheid.I know it sucks for the his fans who live in Florida, but I respect him for taking extreme action. It's easy to criticize an injustice but Stevie is doing more than just talking.

Jay Z, Kanye, Madonna Join Stevie Wonder's Florida Boycott In Wake Of Zimmerman Verdict (REPORT, UPDATES)

The Huffington Post | By Kia Makarechi Posted: 07/22/2013 5:37 pm EDT | Updated: 07/22/2013 7:03 pm EDT

A number of top-level celebrities are reportedly following in Stevie Wonder's footsteps and plan to boycott Florida in protest of the state's "Stand Your Ground" laws. The list, which was first reported by AURN's April Ryan and credited a "a source close to Wonder," includes the likes of Madonna, Usher, Kanye West, Jay Z, Rihanna and Rod Stewart.

Wonder announced his intention to boycott any state with "Stand Your Ground" lawsafter George Zimmerman after a jury acquitted George Zimmerman in the 2012 killing of unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman did not invoke the "Stand Your Ground" defense in the trial, though it did figure into the police's decision not to not arrest Zimmerman for weeks after the incident. Additionally, the "Stand Your Ground" defense appeared in instructions to jurors, and a juror cited the law in explaining the not-guilty verdict.

"I decided today that until the 'Stand Your Ground' law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again," Wonder said at a concert in Quebec City. "As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world. The truth is that -- for those of you who’ve lost in the battle for justice, wherever that fits in any part of the world -- we can’t bring them back. What we can do is we can let our voices be heard. And we can vote in our various countries throughout the world for change and equality for everybody. That’s what I know we can do."

Florida is not the only state with "Stand Your Ground" laws on its books -- at least 23 other states have similar provisions providing varying degrees of legal protection to those who use force in perceived self-defense.

The Huffington Post is reaching out to representatives for a number of artists on this list and will update this post should more information be made available.

UPDATE: A local news outlet in Florida cites "an executive affiliated with the 'Legends of the Summer' tour" who says the Justin Timberlake and Jay Z concert planned for August 16 at Sun Life stadium will go on. As stated earlier, HuffPost has reached out to Timberlake and Jay Z's reps for comment on the reported boycott.

UPDATE 2: A source with knowledge of the matter has denied to HuffPost that Rihanna is joining the boycott. We'll continue to update as more information becomes available.

When they do go on tour they will boycott Florida. Why is this so hard to understand and who would have a problem with artist boycotting the state because of this law. At least they have the balls to do it.

The problem is that for now, this is pretty much a made up list. and they've already started backtracking. Yesterday with Rihanna and today The Rolling Stones denied any boycott or that they heard of the list. One reason why I don't believe any article that cites unnamed sources. Only Stevie Wonder, Mary Mary and The O' Jays said they were boycotting. Frankie Beverly just scheduled a show in St. Petersburg, Fl for September like a week ago. If an artist is going to do something like boycott an entire state, there will be either an official press release or the artist needs to come out and say it themselves.

This is ridiculous. These artists won't skip Florida when they eventually do tour. There are 22 states with the Stand Your Ground law, which by the way had nothing to do with the Zimmerman trial, and they aren't going to pass up all that cash by not playing these states. Many of these artists are talented, but they aren't the brightest bunch of individuals especially if they are signing on with the likes of Al Sharpton.

Florida Boycott List That Included Kanye, Jay Z, Alicia Keys Discredited

By Kia Makarechi Posted: 07/23/2013 4:36 pm EDT | Updated: 07/23/2013 4:38 pm EDT

Representatives for a number of artists on a purported list of musicians and performers boycotting the state of Florida in the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict said Tuesday that their clients have never heard of or been contacted about the list.

American Urban Radio Networks White House correspondent April Ryan first reported the list -- which includes heavyweights like Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Madonna and more -- on Monday and credited it to "sources close to the Stevie Wonder camp." The Huffington Post linked to Ryan's list and noted at the time that representatives for artists were being contacted. Late Monday night, HuffPost sources revealed that Rihanna was not involved, despite being named. MotherJones received word that the Rolling Stones -- who also appear on the list -- had never heard of such a campaign.

Additional representatives on Tuesday confirmed to HuffPost that other boldface names on the the list were not involved, but declined to identify their clients on the record. Denials reached a critical mass that began to shed serious doubt on the veracity of the list. On Tuesday, Ryan posted an update on her website in which she said that representatives of artists named "are uncomfortable being identified on that list."

A similar list had been posted on Instagram and Facebook in advance of Ryan's posting.

HuffPost reached Ryan by phone on Tuesday afternoon, and she said the list came from "very credible sources" who had provided her with accurate information in the past. Ryan said she had not seen the Instagram or other social media posts in advance of publishing the list or her update.

Ryan said she received the the list from sources who were "in support of Stevie" and that it was sent to her via text message "in the middle of the night." rolleyes She saw the message later on Monday morning.

What makes you think that other artist are not going to join Stevie Wonder. We will just have to wait and see. I am not surprised that people today do not understand the importance of boycotts to draw attention to issues and effect change.

You have no idea what artist are going to do. Let's wait and see what happens. I guess some of you are to young to remember all of the artist, businesses and whole countries that boycotted South Africa.

We will see if this generation has some balls.
