Well I gotta admit it did remind me of the "Hey Ya" video too, but still a fun video I enjoyed. MJ L.O.V.E: https://www.facebook.com/...689&type=2 / YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/us...nderSilent

I completely agree. If you listen to her interviews, you'll see how smart Janelle is and what a clear vision she has. "Dance Apolcalyptic" is cool, and I hope it will be a hit for Janelle, but I acually prefer Q.U.E.E.N. There is nothing wrong with trying to have a hit record every once and a while, though. Janelle has done a ton of more experimental stuff and I'm sure will continue to do it.

That too and she is also very talented. If people would stop being so judgemental and just appreciate the fact that she is different and creative unlike 95% of what is being shoved down our ears they might find the beauty that is... Janelle Monae.
Mind boggling how some here criticize her but then turn around and defend the trash on the radio, turn around and make a bunch of threads about the crap out now but then trash a strong, beautiful, intelligent, intellectual and talented woman who dares to make artistic music in this washed up industry... just dont get it.

Can't believe a talented, breath of fresh air artist like Janelle is getting hated on recently on this forum.
Video and song is dope. | |

Ma babe Janelle is slaying ! I can't describe the feeling of seeing my favorite female artist doing such creative videos, having such great reputation among other female singers... I hope The Electric Lady is going to bring her to Official top (u know).. I think Janelle equals quality simply, quality everything (music, taste, videos, look, overall!) I'M JUST PROUD!

It's usual, people HERE hate everyone who's famous or mainstream... Even if he/she makes actually GOOD music.. and they OVERhate good artists who are more famous than other good artists who aren't well known Just like Carousal said, too judgemental. And there's two kind of listeners in this world: Listeners who know quality music (which is old music) and THEY STILL stick to new music and give new GOOD artists a chance and maybe follow them, and there are listeners who just stick to the same artists and hate anything new.. Unfortunately they're missing out a whole new generation of great musicians; Janelle, Bruno, mybe Adele and guys like these... (I can't honestly pick other artists, you know, the Lauryn Hill type is not in the scene anymore, Winehouse died.. who have left from QUALITY people? So it's maybe me who doesn't know other great pop/soul/r&b solo artists or it's just the truth; Real musicians are 6 or 7 today... So this ridiculously has to do with Janelle Monae's matter: We really have to appreciate the fact that she's active in this very decade and she's releasing her stuff soon because she's an artist to trust and to follow, and we shall never be disappointed.

Just because you like Janelle doesn't mean you know "quality music" either. Music snobs make me sick. And I bought Janelle's EP (which I love) and her first album (which is extremely overrated) so no hate from me, just an observation from watching her career. She was a "breath of fresh air" when she debuted but she's being doing the same mess since then IMO.

Yeah, that's it, I like Janelle, she's quality for me... that's the greatest thing a listener could ask for! Satisfaction and not being disappointed!..

I agree that she is the TRUTH we should be grateful to have some great real talent like janelle in this insipid and plastic generation of music...
and how is she making the same thing over and over if she didn't pulished her second major lp yet and basically every song she wrote sounds different from one another?sorry but I find this laughable you can say you don't like her style probably because it changes a lot from a song to an other or 4 other reasons but you CAN' T say about Janelle Monae that her songs are similar..you can't.. she is probably the most versatile artist out there...she does funk, r&b, soul, jazz, pop, rock, rap, classical, etc all blend in a sound that is Janelle Monae's sound.. preach mjcarousal preach! ( in janelle's voice electric ladies will you sleep or will you preach? apparently a lot of people like to sleep )...janelle said she divides the world in 2 categories people who like to judge and people who like to jam...she's totally right..

and she also seems extremely intelligent, classy, funny ( this video shows a funnier side of her)...and talented in her work of course..

Okay--I've now heard something by Janelle Monae. No judgment on her as a whole, but that was certainly fun. A fine little poppy tune. I certainly won't change the station if it comes on over the next couple of months, and I won't skip it if I buy the album, and I'll probably go out of my way to listen to it. It's possible I might choose to listen to it quite a lot. It's still in my head, so--there ya go.
Thumbs up.
I started this comment the day the thing first came out and just now noticed that I apparently never posted it. Oops.

Now I think I'll watch the video--but the song itself made me think of "Hey Ya," and I haven't even seen the video yet.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Okay, there's obvious similarities in the videos. What's really weird to me is--as far as I can tell, I never actually saw the video for "Hey Ya" before (I had to look at it after the Monae), just a little bit of close-up on Andre as lead vocalist.
So--good song, it didn't appear out of nothing but has a history in both sound and visual, like absolutely every other song for the last several thousand years. Cool.
There is nothing new under the sun... but that doesn't mean there isn't good under the sun.

I mean (coming back to a subject I can't seem to leave alone):
The "Hey Ya" video borrows from countless others already, including (probably) both Nirvana's "In Bloom" and Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover."
Why isn't it enough to like or dislike a song, instead of trying to argue about whether or not the performer is earth-shatteringly "different"? I mean, we're on a Prince site, for God's sake, and for a lot of people out there he's nothing but a hodgepodge of Hendrix, Sly, Little Richard, and some random half-good early seventies white rock band (it doesn't matter which). You can trace things in anyone's music, and in their image. That doesn't mean they're "inauthentic." Being "different" doesn't mean you're "authentic" either--people can choose (and many have chosen) "difference" as a promotional image (again, we're on a Prince site, and he's pretty much copped to that in interviews).
But being "authentic" doesn't mean you're good, either.
I like the song. I'm almost certainly going to get the album. I have no idea if Janelle Monae is "being herself" in making it--and I can't know that. But I don't care. And if you like the music, I'm not sure why you do, either. And if you don't like the music, I really don't know why you would care. [Edited 7/4/13 7:46am]

Everyone doesnt have to like her music. Just like how everyone doesnt like Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye... thats fine. However, dont sit up here and call her Rihanna, Beyonce, Katy Perry, etc when she is clearly different from them.
Didnt watch the BET awards but just watched Janelles performance and she killed it!!!

she is stilish, cool, classy, creative, (just beautiful to watch and hear) ...and if someone here compared her to beyonce, rihanna, katy perry and similars needs to be slapped in the face...smh.. and this performance was powerful those verses and how they finished with the black power fists in the air...most powerful ending for an award show since forever..
