I was going to suggest Bonnie Rait and Nora Jones, but somebody already got both of them. I'll add Ani DiFranco, not because she sings soul music, but because she sings from the soul. You can feel that shit.

Janis Joplin. "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

Some great acts here, particularly the jazz vocalists, IMO. I'd add Madeleine Peyroux, Julie Crochetiere and Julia Fordham.
I don't think "soul" can be corralled by genre either. I agree with Cerebus that acts like Ani DiFranco exude tons of soul by way of sheer poignance or visceral rapport. Alongside acts like her, we could add tons of others: Peggy Lee, Patsy Cline, Carole King, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple... and on and on. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

She never got "booed" at the Soul Train Awards whenever her nominations were announced, unlike some other Diva who was seriously lacking soul. I'm just sayin'. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley
