That's it! I think that Steely Dan is now my favorite band!

Seriously, over the past couple years, my addiction to Steely Dan has grown and grown. I literally love almost every song in their cataloug. Donald Fagen and Becker's solo careers 9especially FAgen's) are as good as the band it self too! Almost every album of theirs is flawless, and the giant time gaps between albums is worth it! They say MJ was a perfectionist... Steely Dan is perfectionist to the max! Mixing rock, pop, jazz, funk.... dear lord..... Too many favorite of songs to post here on the org.... How do you all feel about Steely Dan?

I confess I didn't know them until I saw a poll by Prefab Sprout fans in which they were chosen the best band (apart from Prefab Sprout, obviously). Being myself a huge Sprout fan, I thought I should listen to Steely Dan too. So I bought a box set that includes all their albums. It's still in my waiting list, and I think amazing musical moments are waiting me.

Oh trust me friend, some Dan songs arent exactly mindblowing, but the precision, perfect mix between rock, pop, jazz, etc.. and just the heights they went through to make every layer of the song perfect will have you for sure! There are indeed very musical moments waiting for you when you listen to them.

Yeah, that's what I've read about them: studio perfectionsts, carefully crafted tunes. That's also what links them to Prefab Sprout. Well, I have a huge waiting list, but I'll try to listen to the Steely Dan box very soon!

I think sometimes their studio wizardry gets hyped over their other strengths, unfairly. Number one drawcard to Steely Dan for me is undoubtedly, their songwriting.

It's spectacular. Their chord changes are so interesting and surprising, the melodies tied to them are so memorable, and their lyrics are layered, provoking and paint vivid pictures in your mind (not to mention you'll be re-interpreting them many times).

Desert island catalogue? Quite possibly!

Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

Gotta love the Dan. I've seen them live once, one of my all-time highs. It took me a while to get into them, but when I did...I went all the way.

I don't particularly care for the early stuff (Countdown), it's too rock-ish. I'm into the the jazzy perfection of Aja, Pretzel Logic and Gaucho, or even Two Against Nature.

Here's a "deep cut" for Fagen aficionados: "Lazy Nina" from an obscure Greg Phillinganes solo LP -
