RIP Ray Manzarek: Founding Member of The Doors

Publicist: Founding member of The Doors dies at 74

Updated 2:21 pm, Monday, May 20, 2013

Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist who was a founding member of The Doors, has died. He was 74.

Publicist Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald says in a news release that Manzarek died Monday at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his family. He had been stricken by bile duct cancer.

Manzarek founded The Doors after meeting then-poet Jim Morrison in California. The band went on to become one of the most successful rock 'n' roll acts to emerge from the 1960s and continues to resonate with fans decades after Morrison's death brought the band to an end.

I just heard about his passing on a sports talkshow and so far this was the only print news I've found. I liked him as the remaining presence of The Doors. I'm surprised by this one. sad

What a drag- sad

He always seemed to be the one hippie/rockstar that never quite got too wrapped up in all the crazyness..

Loved his playing and tunes and his innovative for the 60s organ/synth bass combo..

RIP brother.

KGO-AM reaired a 2010 interview with Ray Manzarek. Here are the links so that you can hear it.

http://www.kgoradio.com/common/page.php?pt=Ronn+Owens+Podcast&id=4302&is_corp=0

Clink on the link and it's the 5/21, 11am show OR download the link the link for the podcast.

Enjoy! It's really great and I think I heard it the first time it aired but it's something you would get tired of hearing. Ray sounded much younger than his age.

Hands down the greatest keyboard player to ever walk the earth. The guy played keyboard bass with his left hand, "piano" with the right, half of the time he wasnt even looking at the keys and i never heard him miss a beat. Fan-fucking-tastic. RIP, my friend...and burn one with Jimbo for me.

This is a beautiful image of musical notes connoting how music is made ... thank you Ray Manzarek for giving your creativity in music to our space in time.

This guy WAS the sound of the Doors. Jim was the voice and image but Ray created a dark sound that has never been dupliated and gave the band a sound that when you heard it you knew it was The Doors smile

Miles

Sad news indeed. I will echo others here who were surprised he was ill because he always seemed so vigourous and full of energy in interviews in recent years.

His keyboards, 'spidery' and often spooky, were perhaps THE defining sound of the Doors, making the band instantly recognizable on first hearing of any song.

I'll bet Jim Morrison's tracked him down by now in Music Heaven. I imagine his first words to Ray will be, 'So, what kept you?'
