Black Crowes-Wiser for the Time (live album)

Has anyone heard this? It is not quite a new release (it was released in March) but I only found out about it recently. So far it is only available as a four album set or as a download. This was taken from five shows that they played in New York in October/November, 2010. I quite like the setlist and the performances but the sound is a little off. I think they could have cleaned it up just a little bit. There are a few semi-rareities ("Smile," "Darling of the Underground Press." "Exit," "Title Song," "Waiting Guilty") and some interesting covers ("Hot Burrito #1," "Hot Burrito #2," "Oh the Rain," "Tonight I'll be Staying Here with You," "Willin'") to make it a bit different from their previous live albums. I am hoping for an ecentual release on CD.

There's not a lot of talk about the Black Crowes here so I thought that I would get some started. wink

Their second and third albums are fucken amazing. Other than "Josephine", Rich Robinson

has run outta good/interesting musical ideas.

This is wrong on so many levels. "Before the Frost Until the Freeze" proves this dead wrong.

Nope. Robinson's approach to songwriting hasn't changed much since Amorica.

Some fans think that everything they did after Amorica/Three Snakes and One Charm is garbage. I am not one of them. I thought that Warpaint and Before the Frost/Until the Freeze were good-great albums and a nice "comeback." They are definitely a bit mellower now and I sometimes miss the harder/faster rock sound of The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion and, sure, I wish that Marc Ford was still with them but I have really enjoyed the last two albums. Others have said that they are now more Grateful Dead/The Band rather than The Rolling Stones/The Faces and I think that is a pretty good way to describe their current sound.

I agree.

And I too, prefer the Marc Ford years, when they were the most rock n' roll, rock n' roll band

in the world. I remember blasting Southern Harmony and my mom telling me to "turn that

music down!!! And what is that white boy hollerin' about anyways?!!?"

i haven't heard the new live album yet, but you can count me among their faithful. while there are albums that i prefer over others, i don't think they've made a bad album. i think i've nearly worn out sides 2 & 3 of croweology....i'd agree they're mellowing, but not necessarily in a bad way. before the frost... is great. i do hope that if the record any more new material, they rock the fuck out a bit more, though. i'd like more stuff with luther dickinson. he's a great fit. hopefully chris is getting his jam bandiness out of his system with the chris robinson brotherhood (whose 2 albums are also pretty darn good, if you're into the jam bandiness kind of thing).

Southern Harmony is my favorite rock n' roll album.
