Well this is a tough one, some would say the Beatles but you cant say there was a lead in that group, it was a co-lead, but interesting some say George Harrison was the best. So mainly there people go back and forth with John and Paul but neither was the leader. Ironically its hard to name one since most of what im thinking are groups with no- real leader. But you could say Phil Collins, though he wasnt the singer till peter left he was in the band, i prefer Phil's voice over Peter just because with Peter you gotta be in the mood to listen to Peter, you cant just turn on his music everyday.

Agree with everything you said.

A lot of times even groups have co-leads one of them is still regarded as the main co-lead. Like N'Sync...Justin was the main vocalist even JC sang quite a bit as well. O'Jay's kinda fall in this category also. So it can be a tad confusing, I suppose.

Really? I'm not sure I agree with that one. Maybe because the little bit Ive seen of John's singing on youtube during RHCP concerts.

The Wailers, maybe. Peter Tosh's voice has a richness and a depth that Bob's lacks.

(I do like all three of them as singers, though, I have to say - and they all made pretty respectable solo efforts.)

I do dig Peter's voice better than Bob's and Bunny's too. Bunny was the one who produced the vocal harmonies in the group and I think he's the reason the group was called the Wailers in the first place. Plus his real name is actually Neville Livingston. "Bunny" was a nickname and he just added Wailer as his stage name, which I think is pretty cool.

I say that because of the harmonies he gave to RHCP songs. I heard a few solo songs, he's got a really good voice in my opinion.

Neville O'Riley Livingston, at that! And Winston Hubert McIntosh. I'm kind of glad they adapted them to something more self-defined, tbh, since those names always seem to have such a ring of British colonialism about them to me. (No wonder they all became so partial to Marcus Garvey! )

The harmonies are one of the things that make the early records especially, for me. There's a slightly looser vibe than their heroes The Impressions or groups like that, but I really like the way their voices blend, and the way they put these delicate little falsettos in there. There's something pure and idealistic about it, and I always like that when it's genuine.

I was going to say the Supremes, but since someone already mentioned them I will add Fleetwood Mac. Though Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were the co-lead singers, Christine McVie actually had a better voice.

* I don't know that Brendan Benson could be called the lead vocalist of the Raconteurs, but to the extent he may be, I actually prefer Jack White's voice.

* Wendy Melvoin takes lead on most of her material with Lisa Coleman, and for years I thought that was for the best. After White Flags, though, I gotta say I appreciate Lisa's voice at least as much. Two very different textures used to good effect.

* I believe Charlie Brown was responsible for putting together Leaders of the New School. Busta, however, was the superior M.C.

Mick Jones over Joe Strummer in The Clash, one could argue. I won't argue it, but somebody could.

They kind of remind me of Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey in The Who. Jones & Townsend have cleaner voices, but Strummer and Daltrey have more grit.
