Would you call Sting an Icon? I think he is a legend and one of the greatest song writers ever. Icon, not so sure. What say you? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

i think he is very talented, and like you said one of the greatest songwriters of all time. however as far as "iconic" like people like Elvis,Marilyn Monroe, MJ, etc... i would say no.

I would say, considering the general popular definition of the word "icon," that Sting is not considered one. I don't consider him one. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Of tantric rooting? Yes. Music? He's maybe one rung down on the icon ladder, I suppose.

Sting, a living legend? Yes. Sting, an icon? No.

I guess it all depends on how everyone see's icon and such Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

As much as I love the Police and his (earlier) solo work, he IS a legend, but have to say no.
But there are only a select few who could make the "undisputed icon" list, the one that transcends music, and many legends would be omitted. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Love his music, would consider him an exceptionally talented artist, but would not consider him an icon.

He's a legend and I love him and The Police. Incredible songwriter.
But he's not an icon in the sense of MJ, Madonna, Elvis, The Beatles etc... When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace -Jimi Hendrix

I think if either The Police or Sting's solo career had mantained the level of greatness and popularity they had at their peak he would probably be in consideration for Icon status. As it is, no, but his creativity and longevity are both pretty spectacular.

I agree. There was a time when he was #1, and certainly he is a huge star and respected musician. But he's not the type of musician who will end up as a tattoo on Flea's shoulder My Legacy
