Bowie.Love and respect the hell out of both artists but Bowie is the answer. Stevie released "I Just Called To Say I Love You" in 1984 and never really recovered artisticly speaking. Bowie deserves major props for consistently challenging himself musically even well into his 50s and 60s. His 1990s output was ballsy.

hmmm

More like Stevie was force to hold back after the mixed reviews of Journey Through The Secret Life Of Plants album/movie from 1979.

But at least he still had some funk let with Skeletons in 1988. cool

David Bowie, he has a much better back catalogue of song/albums than Stevie Wonder and a far more diverse range of different types of music than Stevie Wonder. I like and own some Stevie Wonder albums, but he's not one of my favorite artists.

Damn it! You have to put two of my favorite artists against each other! I think I'll have to say Bowie because while I love 70's and early 80's Stevie after that his career got dry. Bowie's latest album is a masterpiece, I can't say that about any of the Stevie Wonder albums in the past 25 years.

Bowie's new album is great IMO. wink

Bowie certanly has more range of musical textures, but he never made an album as great as Songs in the Key of Life.

But yes Bowie is more conceptual, I think.

I need to listen to more Stevie Wonder and Bowie.

I can't compare them at all... I love em both and they are so inspirational.

Fashionwise and imagewise - Bowie Wins.

Lyrically and musically - they are on the same level even though Wonder might be the better instrumentalist.

Vocals - Stevie Wonder no doubt.

Bowie is more creative but that's all he's got going for him lol I never liked his voice at all. I'd easily pick Stevie any day over him.

I still don't see why they are being compared at all. lol That thought never occurred to me. I love songs from both and they are both creative genuises in their own individual ways. This thread is wrong on so many levels... lol

Sevie Wonder is an all-time great, but David Bowie is a musical genius on the same level as Lennon/McCartney, Prince and Frank Zappa. No one could have imagined up something as monumental as Station to Station or 'Heroes.'

My personal top 4 are 1) Prince 2) David Bowie 3) The Cure 4) The Beatles, so David Bowie is my choice.

This is a good topic. Both artists defined by a prolific 70's peak despite work in five decades, both legitimate legends. I feel Bowies wins the 80's to the 00's. Stevie may well be untouchable for some people with his big 3-5 albums in the 70's (songs in the key of life etc) but I would put (Hunky Dory, Diamond Dogs, Ziggy, Aladdin Sane) to trump it. Bowie wins as an artist for me personally, but as an instrumentalist and an innovator Wonder runs him close. Stevie Wonder has a superb voice. I love Bowie's voice it has character and is instantly recognisable even if it is a flawed diamond. biggrin

Garth Ennis put out this comic book called The Preacher. One of the underlying story lines revolved around the progeny of an angel and a demon. It was a cantankerous offspring, bereft of any real character development...but the premise had some merit.

Bowie is more of an artist than musician. Wonder is more of a musician than an artist. One is more calculated, one is more divinely inspired. They've both stepped outside of these definitions and improved themselves for it. They've both attempted to deny or transcend their strengths - what they bring to the world - and created questionable work by doing so. One is an atheist. The other is deeply religious. Both reflect it in their work and the subjects of their focus.

I've always been a Bowie fan, but if I had to stick to a hundred minutes of music from either of them to last the rest of my life, I'd have to go with Wonder.

I'm not sure where I was going with The Preacher metaphor...I have a distant memory of being disappointed that the comic never developed what this child would be like. Like, what would a collaboration between Bowie & Wonder might be like...they've both collaborated with mostly like-minded folk, but just throwing those two names together invokes the potential of creating something like we've never heard before.

I am being for real these are 2 artists that actually FOUGHT for racism to be bullshit of the past.

I was suprised at Timmy84 answer cause i knew he was a big Stevie fan had no idea he was a huge bowie fan.

But others seem shocked he said Bowie cause what timmy is black? confused going back to that bullshit of whites will choose Bowie and black will choose Stevie.

I always hear shit like this down in my hometown in TX lol but here i would expect better.

And it's bad enough once again when you compare a shitty artist to a good artist and people flame! but put 2 great artists together and people still get butt hurt that someone they never met prefers one over the other lol

Sorry that shit just irked me and is driving me to in a nice big brother way slap ya across the head.

That is all sperm spank ky

So sick of the division with music agendas--why can't Black folks like Bowie; why can't white folks like Stevie?! I don't get it--never did. Maybe someone wiser than me can explain this (past the usual facile racist arguments). confused
