Very surprised you're not a fan.

Oh my goodness, Sade has made career of singing the same damn song over and over. Bore me to death... I spoke at this at length in another thread and a few took exception. Woman sings as if she's on quaaludes, I don't understand her career / success.

Interesting considering you listen to jazz/blues greats like Dinah Washington, Billie Holliday,

and Sarah Vaughn.

I agree

I like Sade but she is not a Billie Holiday/Dinah Washington status. They are legends. I consider her to be an Icon but not a legend.

Come on now, being a jazz singer requires a lot and it's not easy. Dinah, Billie and Sarah are not only among the greatest singers of the last century but also incredibly revolutionary when it comes to singing, they changed the way people sing.

Sade is a perfect example of how ridiculous Shows like American Idol are. If Sade went up in front of the judges, she would come off like some comedy relief.
Yet her voice has lead a band that sold more records and gained more fame than all the AI winners combined.
I think Sade (as a band) is iconic.

Speaking of AI, here's a list of pop culture icons that would get a huge laugh if appeared on Idol:

Prince
Micheal Jackson (in the 90's/00's)
Madonna

Interesting thesis. I think you're right, someone said that American Idol is the baby of Mariah Carey type of singers, which is kinda true. Most vocalists on AI use alot of mellismas and sing good from a proffesional point view, but it's not exciting or new. I def think Prince & Madonna wouldn't make the cut though lol, MJ is the better vocalist out of those 3 but you're right in a sense, the late rhythmic singer that MJ was might not have been on the show lol. Singing is more than just hitting the right note though.

Ridiculous to compare American Idol to real talent.

Geez. She's been away for over 10 years, releases an album and goes on a world wide arena tour. And she didn't do that once, she did that twice, so yeah... she's definitely an icon.

I disagree

His voice changed dued to health reasons and age but MJ during his prime was a very talented singer. I even think he was a good singer during the 90s and 00s on songs like Butterflies, Childhood, You Are Not Alone and Speechless

Or a legend? Or do you feel it is too soon to call her either one?

GOod question. She's a great talent, a beautiful woman, and has sold over 100 million records. But in America sade is not an Icon. In england and europe most definitely.

Really? I find that Americans appreciate her a lot more than at home. She doesn't get much attention here, although I'm actually baffled at how she could sell out big concert arenas. It can't be the most exciting and animated show to want to buy a ticket at the back.

Actually, Sade the group puts on a great show... I was not disappointed when I saw them in 2010.

Genuinely asking here as it's not really my thing. What was so great about it? She doesn't have a "big" voice and the rest of the band aren't exactly known. I saw Alicia Keys once at the O2 Arena and it was just really really boring. It would have been great at a smaller venue but that style of music and performance wasn't suited to a big arena.

Strong band plus great songs plus great vocals plus an awesome backdrop screen with integrative visuals all equaled a memorable performance at the Oracle Arena. Well worth waiting for... I was disappointed with John Legend's half-hearted opening performance. Not Sade's.

Wow...good question. Legend, yes. Icon. yes. I would put them up there for the success and longevity alone. Who else in 30 years consistently sees their albums go Platinum, yet has breaks of 10 years between releases? No one I can think of. It's amazing really that their special brand of music still has such a massive audience. smile

One of the finest bands I've ever seen and Ms. Adu is positively regal.

I've seen both Sade and Alicia and while Alicia's show was good, Sade was on a whole nother level. Her shows create a whole atmosphere, mood and experience.

Interesting Question..

I think Yes & NO.

I think she's and Icon to people that experienced her and her style/music in the 80's/90's but, (IMO)

She hasn't left a big enough legacy behind to make future generations view her as one of the more important artists of her time.. ala Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston ect.. I see her somewhat in the zone of George Michael in terms of Iconic status.

That's very close to how I feel. If you were there at the time, you couldn't miss her. But I don't get the feeling that she's stayed very relevant to people in the years since.

Not an insult to her though, I think she's awesome. Just hasn't aged as well as some.

There are only four iconic pop recording artists/figures and sadly, Sade is

not one of them. She is more of a cult icon than anything else.

(The four: Michael Jackson, Madonna, Elvis, The Beatles)
