Top 3 Early Funkadelic Songs

Funkadelic had several different, always interesting phases in its history. I enjoy it all. The first 3 albums are almost a genre unto themselves -- Funkadelic, Free Your Mind ... And Your Ass Will Follow, Maggot Brain -- psychedelic, motown, experimental, funk rock. Here are my favorites from those albums:

I Bet You

Great drums, great guitar lick & guitar sound, fantastic singing, cool lyrics. This song has iit all.

Can You Get That

Great bass singing & harmonies, cool lyrics

Maggot Brain

Emotional, evocative guitar playing with a cool little George Clinton rap intro

What are yours?

Yep, that's a good one. I really like how George's voice sounded when they were young. It's great that some of those tunes are still around today.

Of course, it's The Parliaments, so technically not Funkadelic, but I understand why you included it -- the same singers and probably mostly the same band, unless they used session players on that one.

How could I forget Funky Dollar Bill?! Great choice. Hmm, if I add that to my list, I'll have to demote Maggot Brain. Ooh, that's a tough call.

I really dig all versions of "Heart Trouble," the precursor to "You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure."

Bernie Worrell was tearing the keys apart here...

And how could anyone not like this earliest doo-wop version?

Other than Maggot Brain, their pre-Bootsy stuff did NOT move me when it came out.

I was not on the P-funk train until 1975............after that, I never left.

Hopefully you came to dig early Funkadelic in later years smile . A lot of the best P-Funk stuff IMO is on their Westbound albums. While I like a lot of the late '70s P-Funk (and some beyond the '70s too), some of it does sound a little 'corporate' and superficial to me compared to the early stuff, which sounds more spontaneous and soulful.

"You and your folks, me and my folks"

I also have great love for:

"Baby I owe you something good", & "Biological speculation"

Although they're from later albums.

I'd post links, but I'm dumb like that

No need for links cool I can find the songs if I want to listen to them.

And since your second two are from Westbound albums with a heavy Eddie Hazel presence, they still have that early Funkadelic feeling.

Let's Take It To The Stage is probably my favorite of the Funkadelic album's I've heard. After that, I love "Hit It and Quit It"... "Funky Dollar Bill"... and the entire self-titled Funkadelic LP (if I have to pick one track off the top of my head, I'll choose "I'll Bet You").

It is sort of hit an miss 4 me up until 1975.

I still listen on a regular basis though. These guys cram a lot onto their material.

U have 2 listen with intent.
