Producer Louie Vega came up with the canny idea of sampling a vocal hook from his own production and putting out the sample track first. The sample track was Hardrive's 'Deep Inside' and when 'Beautiful People' dropped with a vocal hook everyone already it blew up instantly. Setting the tone for 1990s vocal house, 'Beautiful People' firmly established Tucker as a leading lady of house and crashed the UK Top 30 courtesy of Positiva.
Take a look around at all the people everyone is trying hard to compete if they only took the time but looked a litle deeper they'll find, i'll find, you'll find that beauty is skin deep it's not what you wear, it's just who you are and if we're going far then what will be? Yeah, oooh, yeah Beautiful people... Is it what we need? Is it what we need? Beautiful people...
Everyone collides, but i'll abide people need to be true to themselves when will we stop hurting and learn to love one another? Momma said, don't judge a book by it's cover cause soon you will discover, it's unnatural, unnatural, psychological, oh, oh Beautiful people... sing with me oh, with me, work with me Beautiful people...

Carroll was born in Chicago in 1968. As a boy, he learned to sing while a member of his church choir. As a teenager, he was a fan of rock band KISS, but became interested in house music when he attended a high school dance and spent time watching the DJ perform. Carroll started performing as a DJ in the late 1980s in a club he himself opened. He released his first official record, "My Prayer", in 1993, a track produced by local producers Hula (from the Outhere Brothers), Kay Fingers and Ron Trent. Because of his style of singing like a preacher, he received the nickname "The Minister of Sound".
In 1994, he got his first big break when he attended the Winter Music Conference in Miami. Still an unknown outside Chicago, Carroll walked up to Louie Vega, who gave him a chance to write the lyrics to Barbara Tucker's "I Get Lifted".
