I've never listened to him on purpose, other than She's Got That Vibe. I don't think I can name 5 R. Kelly songs that he sings himself. lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

What ?! Can you explain please ? I've seen the man live, he's a great singer.

I liked most of the names that were listed before by the way

lol are you serious ? I mean, I really don't understand how can one say that he's not a great singer. You might not like his music (I don't feel a lot of his early 2000's music), you might not like his voice, you might not like the man, Im alright with all that but you need to explain to me why you think that he's not a great singer.

R. Kelly is a descent singer but "great" might be an exaggeration but I do like him (MOSTLY his 90s material) cool

I don't need to compare him to anybody but since you've asked. I've seen all of the guys on your list in concert. I've seen some of them 3 or 4 times, they all have their strenghts and weaknesses. The fact that they rock too doesn't make R Kelly any less great.

That being said Maxwell was better when he was younger, his voice is not that strong anymore, D'angelo is good but I wouldn't put him beside someone like Rahsaan Patterson ...

It's just not the kind of music I like, and I don't really like the popular singing style of the time (ie. Jodeci) either. I didn't care for most of the popular 1990's R&B music (or Top 40 pop and rock for that matter), so I didn't seek it out and I mostly only listened to the oldies stations if I turned on the radio. I was listening to dance music at the time like C+C Music Factory, Gerardo, and Ace Of Base as far as newer acts goes. I don't know much about the music played on the radio after around 1989 or 1990, and nothing at all about grunge or "boy bands". It got to the point where when I bought a new Weird Al album, I had never heard the songs he was spoofing, so they were all original songs to me. lol

I don't like D'Angelo either. I like a few Maxwell songs, but can't really get into neo-soul, not my kind of thing.

Fair enough, K-Ci and Jojo were dope vocally, great mix of rawness and shine

Rachelle was THE FIRST name in my head but I read the title and thought about the word "nowadays" and decided to go with Ledisi.

Well the OP never specified what they meant by nowadays. shrug
I saw Ms. Ferrell last year when she came through L.A. and i'll be going to see her again exactly one week from today.

That's literally nowadays to me! wink

I don't understand why people post pictures of folks and not label them, like everyone knows who they are. lol It's not like they're Marilyn Monroe or someone that a lot of people would recognize.

They don't make any money off their sound anyway and we don't have to listen to half of them unless they're jammed down our weary esophaguses. sexy

When you say "nowadays", I take it you means within 2010-13 thus far, hence why and how I'll answer your question like THIS....

Females:

1. Jennifer Hudson

2. Pink

3. Adele

4. Jill Scott

5. Kelly Clarkson

Males:

1. Prince (simply because there are too many male vocalists in the 2010's right now that are trying to him Prince-ly high notes just like this man! Even without making anymore career albums at the moment , he is still influencing young male vocalists today.)

2. Usher

3. Adam Levine

4. Robin Thicke

5. Bruno Mars
