I like Marisol Hernandez, the lead singer of La Santa Cecilia. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Female:
She's not been in the limelight lately but I still think Chrisette Michele has one of the best voices out there. Kelly Clarkson and Pink are pretty head to head. Matter of fact there's a lot of songs on either one's albums that I can hear the other singing. I bet they get pitched a lot of the same material.
Male:
Bruno Mars, for sure. Jamie Lidell

wow, Jack White can SING? hmmm, I never knew that, but I guess I wouldn't, I've never heard anything by him or the White Stripes (the chant from 7 Nation Army at football games doesn't count). Well get OUT, i thought he was just another "artsy rocker," they aren't usually known for their vocals. Hard for me to chime in on the OP, there aren't 4-5 artists male and female that I listen to today

Looks like most of the folks in here listen to the same people. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. Btw i hated that i forgot Adam Lambert, i know the guy's music is so pop and stuff, but since it's about vocals i think he's such a beast.. nobody can deny it!

Lila Downs is pretty good. She primarily sings in Spanish, but has some English songs. I also like Malian singer Oumou Sangare, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Shiina Ringo, and Rose Elinor Dougall, who used to be in the girl group The Pipettes. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
