I saw Bruno Mars a couple of years ago when he toured with Janelle Monae and I quite liked some of his songs... That is, the ones that weren't tailor-made for the teeny-bopper girls who kept screaming in my ears through the whole concert... :wince: I didn't know who he was before then but I told my son, who went with me, that he was very talented and that I would like to see him do some more substantial songs. I hope he continues to grow beyond the screaming jitter-bugs and fully explore his musical abilities. smile

I will admit I was one of those ones who thought Bruno was overrated when he FIRST came on the scene but when I saw his performance at the Grammys last year, I aint gonna lie I was VERY IMPRESSED eek I LOVED his James Brown tribute! I can still remember it, I usually dont remember performances eek

I just finished watching this clip and this was another excellent performance from him! He is a really good performer and he is really talented. I actually think his singing has tremendously grown and he seems to be growing as an artist overall.

I do like him, I wouldnt call myself a fan just yet but it is getting there lol I have to listen more to his music first but for now he is underrated as a "performer"

Damien Marley is another one that is underrated but Ive always loved him.

I love this performance and I love that they made a tribute to Bob Marley, it's not often they tribute Reggae musicians. I love Bruno lol, I think he's really talented but his talent is sometimes hidden with the teen hysteria around him and his lack of knowing how to create better and more creative arrangements to his pop songs. He'll get there though and I love that he is trying to have fun with music and does what he likes and not what others want him to do. I really enjoyed his recent album and I love that he has studied the greats of the past and different types of genres.

Did anyone hear the song with Esperanza Spalding? I thought it was pretty good smile

Bruno is definitely a great performer. I'm a fan of him live, but his catalog has a looong way to go. This tribute is epic, so good. Rihanna did not need to be there, but I didn't mind her much. Damien shut it DOWN! I think I'm in love with him...and Sting, come on... The whole thing was just too fkn cool.

Sting was really good as well...

Bruno's problem is no different than his peers. For some reason they think being a good performer is more important than being a good artist. Unlike some other singers, I do think Bruno is an artist but he needs stronger material. I have to listen more to his music.

I loved Sting! (Hopefully I'll see him live later this year cool)

You are right, but I think he is different than his peers because he really loves music, which doesn't seem to be the case for others who are just in it for the money or fame. I prefer him live than on album as well and that's a good thing in today's music lol... Did you listen to the song with Esperanza?

Nice to read some of y'all are finally starting to appreciate Bruno lol I never understood all the hate he received on this forum when he first came out. Bruno has a great voice both live and in the studio and is creative. I think his catalog will get better with time nod

I think Bruno is adorable and Sting is very cool but I was still disappointed that the tribute was not led by Damian and Ziggy. They're his sons for chrissakes. They seemed to be kind of an afterthought even though Damian set it off when he finally came on.

And Badu should have been up there instead of Rihanna...she had already been showcased at other times in the show.

Actually funny about this thread - through the week I heard a song called "When I was your man" on the radio when driving to work and thought - Wow that is a great song sung with heart and real meaning - and then they said it was by Bruno Mars. So I have brought his first album and this week I shall buy his other one. I think he has a great voice - and will become so much better as time goes on. I look forward to his journey.

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

He enlists 3 or more songwriters on nearly everything he records because his hackneyed lyrics can bore you into a coma.

Our bar on expectations is set so low nowadays that even this guy can get labeled as the next best thing.

Not sure about the comments about his material being weak on this thread. I've had to conclude that his music isn't for me, but I have to admit that some of the songs on his new record are very strong. The songwriting and production is excellent ("Moonshine", "Young Girls", "When I Was Your Man" etc.).

His new record shows real craftmanship and appreciation for music. Can't hate the guy.

I agree.

His music is very weak, especially the song writing and so his voice, he strains to notes which aren't particulary high and it sounds plain bad.
