PurpleCharm said: Beyonce's Super Bowl performance exposed how weak her catalog really is. Her song selection may have seemed poor, but that's because her body of work is lacking for an artist of her caliber. "Single Ladies" is her most iconic anthem song (and she has plenty of anthem songs) so it made sense that she sung that one. But really, what else could she have song...Ring the Alarm, Irreplaceable, Freakum Dress, Diva, If I Were A Boy??? The best she could do was Crazy In Love, Single Ladies, Halo and the medley of D.C. song and that speaks volume.
Overall I give her performance a B-/C+.
I wonder how did Michelle manage to get selected to be in the group when she can't sing or dance.

Yes it was typical Beyonce.
Same moves, same oversinging, same bad dancing
The best part was the reunion with Destiny's Child
Oh, and did anyone notice when she did lip-synch?
She did perform 95% of it live however she did lip-synch... The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

I feel like you are a ARTIST FIRST before you are a performer because when you perform you are just simply expressing the creativity of the song/composition. That should never outway your music because at the end of the day you are a singer/artist FIRST not JUST someone who performs random songs. It seems TODAY people care more about a singer who can PERFORM versus someone who creates or strives to take risks musically as an singer.
The thing about Beyonce is although she is talented I just think she can be easily duplicated or replaced.
There is nothing special about her voice or singing. She also is a average dancer and I personally think her stage presence is contrived but to alot of people "looks" means you have charima. If she wasnt attractive I highly doubt she would be as popular. She is not creative or innovative as a performer or "singer".
I know I criticize her alot but Im not going to sit up here and act like the girl is not talented because she is.... but I think her talent is exaggerated/limited and I think their are more talented artists/singers/performers besides her and alot that are better.
Ive never been moved by her singing like I am by MJ, Sam Cooke, Marvin Prince, Sly, Tina ETC. She just seems like a robot. And Ive REALLY tried to like her as a performer/artist and ....I just dont.
I dont even like Madonna but I think objectively, her halftime overall was better than Beyonces.
Madonna's half time was not all that but at least the visual staging effects were creative and different, the wardrobe and staging matched the songs and everything was cohesive and flowed nicely unlike Beyonces. I think Madonna is not as good of a performer as her Girlie Show era and her age has alot to do with that but the staging effects were more entertaining to me.
Beyonces halftime was better than Black Eyed Peas but I dont think it was memorable or deserves to be ranked in the top 5 as best Super Bowl performances. Janet's was descent but I think her placement is to high. Billboard even ranked her at number 2 and I think thats TO high.

I don't think she can be duplicated that easily, else she wouldn't have lasted so long. The industry is harsh and it takes a lot of hard work to stay relevant. Look at Ciara, Amarie, Christina Millian , who were all famous in the early 00s. She worked hard and tried what worked for her and I think that's the difference between her and others in her generation. I personally always loved Kelly Rowland much better in the beginning of DC (I've been following DC since 97) and I still think that Kelly has the better voice and though I've always liked Beyonce - I also had a period where I was hating on her, I think it was around (late 08 and 09) because those awful songs that she released those years, If I was a boy and Single Ladies, made me cringe, literally! But then I went to see her live in 09 and my opinion changed, because the girl has so much charisma and is pretty likeable. I've seen MANY artists and all type of genres (rock, funk, jazz, pop, country, blues, etc) and Beyonce does deliver live and the all girl-band really does help, because it's all girl power! The girl really tries to work hard, but I think overexposure is bad for an artist because it makes the audience start getting tired of that artist. There are not many entertainers in todays MAINSTREAM music and I would pick Beyonce over Adele anyday, since many people are saying that Adele is the greatest singer of that generation bla bla bla....

I was thinking the same thing I didn't even recognize or remember some of those songs. She may have had many "hits",but with the exception of "Crazy In Love",those songs don't seem to have much staying power.

These superbowl shows are going over the top. Too many effects, too many people on stage. I saw Madonna's show yesterday again and it's the same thing.
Janet's and Prince are still the best to me.
Prince for the music and I just liked Janet show, it was a real show where the effects and people on stage didn't take away the focus on the music. Although she's not the best singer in the world, I think she nailed it.

I disagree.
Beyonce can be easily duplicated and replaced because she is not original and innovative. She exactly has been replaced already ex. Katy Perry, Rihanna, Bieber who are more successful on pop charts than her currently.
Artists that can not be duplicated are artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, Tina, Stevie, etc often imitated but never duplicated
Now if she was innovative as an overall artist and performer I would agree with this but she is not which is why she peaked in 09 and her popularity is slowly declining. Her vocal range is also limited as well although she can carry a tune.
The reason why she has lasted so long is because she is backed by a corporate marketing machine that has alot to do with the help of her Father. Just because you are plastered all over magazine covers and release an album every year or perform at alot of award shows does not mean that you work harder than everyone of your generation.
I talked about this in another thread and TO ME, an artist who has good work ethic, works hard to perfect their craft and strives to push themself creatively/artistically and Beyonce has not done or does that. She tries to stay relevant with the radio instead of being artistic with her music and to me she seems to care more about having a reason to be in the spotlight instead of growing as an artist . A band that has good work ethic to me is a band like Mint Condition who has been working hard perfecting their craft for almost 20 years now but nobody says anything about that because they are not backed by the same corporate machine Beyonce is.
Those other female singers you mentioned were not backed by the same corporate machine Beyonce is so that is not really a fair comparision. She comes from a generaton of bad music, limited talent and because she possesses some talent she is overhyped partially her own doing and partially by the media but that doesnt necessarily mean there not talents like her out today because they are. Ive seen more talented performers and singers than her. Most of her popularity is largely based off her image/marketing.
Girl me and you are around the same age, so we pratically grew up with Beyonce. I have/had friends/roomates who listen to her music so whether I did or did not want to listen to her albums or look at her concerts I didnt have choice. Im surrounded by the shit on a daily basis
Ive listen to all her albums (not by choice but just from them being played in the company of friends/roomates etc )and I dont care for any of it. I even think her last album which her fans rave is her most artistic album, is very bland. She has more ballads on there but their not moving and the album is not cohesive or creative. I dunno, she just bores me, cant get into her

Well different strokes for different folks, is the best way to put it! I'm around so many aspiring artists, people who've won grammys (I am myself an aspriring song-writer and musician, singer sometimes) and I dont define what's best or not, every artist has their fanbase and I leave it at that, I feel that it takes too much of my time to give my perspective on an artist I don't like (I used to invest my time into doing that, but this critism and elitism of what's good music or not has been going on since the greeks and Platos theories on music). It's like when that hate against Justin Bieber was all around the net, I commented on it from a musicologist perspective and that was it, but I don't spend much time on artists I don't like. The music industry is basically a cash machine and sometimes there are talented artists and sometimes not, their job is to make money. I know so many talented musicians and singers, who don't want to get famous and just want to play for themselves and the world is missing out. It's like I remember having a convo with a friend about Prince playing 4 instruments at a good level (guitar, base, piano and the drums) and he was amazed at that, but I've met so many people just like that and who are excellent but for whatever reason arent as creative or arent interested at all in becoming famous, they just arent into popular culture but rather live the vagabond life of a musician on the street. Hope you're having a good day. When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace -Jimi Hendrix

Excately, she has real stage presence, she makes you focus on her. I miss that with some other shows, the artists get lost in the show, especially Madonna, but Beyonce too. Madonna has stage presence, but she was really lost in the superbowl show.

Did Beyonce flash an Illuminati sign? Why did the Superdome power go out? Your Super Bowl mysteries, solved!
By Jay Busbee | Shutdown Corner – 11 hours ago
1. Did Beyonce flash the Illuminati sign during her halftime performance?According to legend, the Illuminati are a tiny, super-secret cabal of influential individuals who have shaped the course of world events. So it makes perfect sense that Beyonce would flash their triangle sign to one of the largest viewing audiences in human history. What better way to preserve a secret? That's a definite possibility. Also a possibility? That she was showing some love to her husband Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records, which uses the diamond as its symbol. (Here's a bunch of celebs doing the same thing.) But then again, maybe Roc-A-Fella is in on it too. It's all connected!

@ Goldolphin
Great Post!
I agree with you!!
However, after a while it is kinda hard to not comment on things or artists that are constantly overexposed or that you see all the time whether you like the artist or not.
I agree. If people like a certain type of music than thats them. I'm cool with alot people that dont have the same taste as me which is natural since most people my age are into whats current but I dont judge them based off of that because that is not how I judge people or my friends and I just think thats just rather immature to judge someone off the music they listen to
With that being said, I try to come here to get away from all of that and to talk about older soul/funk music (my personal preference )or just other kinds of music besides whats popular (since that is something that Im exposed to already outside of this site ) but it seems this place has turned into the very music preferences I am not really into so naturally I will express and vent that since I dont have the opportunity outside of a music site to do that unless music discussions like we have here arises. There are not alot of people my age that feel as strongly about music or as opinionated about music as me, so I express my opinions here or on music sites.
I think the problem here specifically is, people make a bunch of threads on artists that people dont like here and that gets arise out of people. If you have a bunch of Rihanna/Beyonce threads on a site that is dedicated to a man over 50 naturally they are going to express how overrated they are? ya know? But I can see how after a while it gets old.
Im just tired of the overrated pop tarts and the threads they get here. I do admit I reply in them at times with my long expressive rants (I dont make no apologies for them either ) Im also tired of people excusing those threads by simply saying dont go in the threads when its more threads non related to music being made more than what it should.
My day is beautiful, Im SO happy for the Ravens and Ray! I dont even watch football but glad they won Hope your day is going good

I feel you though and that's cool. I guess for me I just love pop culture and while I do have a very special taste in music, I don't mind talking about what's current, everything influences me in some way. But current music can be pretty boring and I don't really talk about it that much. I don't even like the super bowl performances either, it goes against what I believe music is all about. It feels so commercial and made into a package that is supposed to cater a group of people who are more interested in the game than the music. I think the reason why I like MJs performance from 93 is because it had a message, but even that performance was very bland in his standards.
I hate american football lol xD! But I'm happy that your team won! Thanks !.... I'm studying music theory, so this keeps me entertained... lol Love your pic btw! I thought it was flashy, and she's still sexy. Definitely a visual feast that rivaled if not exceeded what Madonna did
But despite knowing most of the songs, they don't come across as songs as such. They come across as a continuous medley of noise, as does her singing.
Destiny's Child is in no need of reformation! Beyonce is and was the star of that group, and it showed last night. They just could not keep up with her.
All in all, a decent show, but I don't like her music and hate her singing. What it really was was a multi-million dollar burlesque show. My Legacy

I'm not trying to diss Beyonce or sound like someone who is a ''hater''
But peoples reactions are so over the top
On GMA the hosts were all like ''oh i have seen every super bowl since 1987 and this is the best one by far''
people are so easy to hype ANYTHING these day's...
Beyonce's show reminded me of Bruce... Bruce put on a great show and had amazing energy but it's all stuff we have sene before(And his song choices were meh ) Or you have seen before if you are a fan anywho.
Prince had the marching band and a bunch of other thing's to go along and that made it fun!
Or when Aerosmith did that show with N'Synch and Britney... i had N'Synch but it was a cool and suprising mix.
but meh to each their own i guess. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Kelly was hardly scared. If anything I never seen her so confident. She slayed Beyonce in that short little segment. If Beyonce god forbid would have passed out. Kelly could have easily taken over.Without missing a beat. Beyonce got her off the stage because she was threatened by her endurance & didn't want to be upstaged even more than she already had. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! I aint trying to be funny but Kelly came for avenges last night. She was FIERCE! My eyes were on her when she danced and she was together with Beyonce and killed it! I wish they could have stayed on longer. She looked great to.
@ Gunshalen comment:
You need to read some of the celebrity tweets There acting like... Beyonce is God and like that was their first time seeing Beyonce shake her butt and toss her weave. Kobe even had the audacity to call her the greatest female performer of all time I dont know if that is major ass kissing or if they really think that
Im watching Prince performance right now and WOW.... speechless. The passion he displayed, now looking at it again I think it was even better than MJ's although I love MJ and think he did good to.
@ Goldolphin.... I agree with your post. I didnt think MJs halftime was not his best but I still thought it was good and I really liked the message and how the audience was involved in his performance.
