Sorry, but Beyonce's Super Bowl Halftime Show Wasn't That Great

Immediately after she took her incredibly awkward bow for her Super Bowl halftime show (brought to you by Pepsi, fame, and abnormally excellent genetics), the reviews for Beyoncé were rapturous and the GIFs of every movement she made popped up like chicken pox on an 8-year-old. I'm sorry, but I didn't think it was that great.

I'm gonna start off saying that I am a Beyoncé fan, that I have her music on my iPod, and that I have made the "Single Ladies hand" on the dance floor in more than one gay bar in more than one city in America (and one in Canada). I think she is an enormously talented and wonderful performer with a great voice, who was not lip syncing at President Obama's inauguration. And her performance at the Super Bowl was good, but it was basically a Beyoncé concert distilled down to 12 minutes. Just like we had to endure commercials for Go Daddy, Two Broke Girls, and (ugh) Scientology, we also had to endure this extended informercial for Beyoncé, something that most of us would gladly buy anyway.

Just look at how the performance began, with a shot of the stage that was monomaniacally shaped like not one but two Beyoncé heads. Then we saw a giant silhouette of her — larger-than-life in pink neon — posed like the real version of her below. Then she strutted her way across an empty show. It was clear from the start that this was going to be all about Beyoncé. It got even worse as she stood, practically alone, at center stage. That's like having a deliciously prepared Thanksgiving turkey and only eating one drum stick. There is so much more you could do! To make it even worse, when there weren't enough Beyoncés on the stage that were made out of Beyoncés, she had video projections of even more Beyoncés just so you knew that this was, after all, a Beyoncé show. The problem is, we didn't want a Beyoncé show. We wanted an extravaganza. We wanted something that was huge and maximalist and full of surprises. We wanted the biggest 'wows' to not be a guitar shooting sparks, and Kelly Rowland and (non-Oscar nominee) Michelle Williams launching themselves out of the floor. This wasn't about Beyoncé, this was about football. This was about America. This was about the biggest pop cultural event of the year, and she failed to do anything special.

Not only did she not debut any music or even flog a new single (maybe because the new Destiny's Child track is rather subpar), but all of the moves in the show were cribbed from other Beyoncé performances. We saw her dance with video projections of herself at the Billboard Music Awards. We've seen her snap her weave in the air and punch toward the ground in a the "Single Ladies" video a million times. We've also seen her "give the hand" both in the video and in concerts a million times, and she did it yet again last night on every television set with a half-boozy audience tuning in between bites of nachos. This was nothing original, nothing new and — though deftly executed — nothing like the extravaganza we were hoping for.

The "Destiny's Child reunion" was the worst. It was bad enough that we barely got to hear more than 30 seconds of each of B's biggest hits, but we only got two short snippets of the girl group's top hits, "Bootylicious" and "Independant Woman, Part 1." We're still waiting for that sequel. (And where was "Bills Bills Bills"? Where was "Say My Name"? Where was "Survivor"?) While ostensibly equals in a girl group (yeah right), the other two are now officially relegated to back-up dancers serving their queen. Adding insult to short-lived injury, Beyoncé then forced these two to sing back up on one of her songs. They each got a little verse to sing alone, but when they did their mics were turned so low you couldn't even hear them (the same was true when all were singing together). Then we were told to give it up for Kelly and Michelle as they resumed their rightful place somewhere off the stage.

The pace of the whole package was quite frenetic and didn't flow well, trying to hit as many of the hits as it could without giving us a meaty bite of each to chew on. This wasn't a five course meal, it was a tapas dinner, which always leaves you feeling dissatisfied and hating that you have to share plates with anyone. When trying to go from song to song, there were long pauses so that we could all cheer and applaud, rather than winding it into one seamless performances. Poor Beyoncé didn't even sing that much. That might be due to the whole lip-syncing controversy she just emerged from, and her promise to sing live. I get all that, because she had to do it to save her reputation. Still, she was spending so much energy and breath on the dancing that she couldn't spend as much singing. That's understandable, but when there were casts of thousands at her disposal to do some of the heavy lifting and two women who were barely dancing at all on call who she has been singing with for years, maybe she should have shared some of the burden. (An invitation to get sister Solange up there would have been greatly appreciated as well.)

But no, Beyoncé never shares the burden. It is always all about her, just like last night was, and I think the show suffered for it. Again, this was not her concert. This was not her HBO special documentary. This was not the Grammys or the American Music Awards or the VMAs. This was the Super Bowl, and I expected more. In my opinion, Beyoncé did not deliver the show stopper I know she's capable of. I can't wait to see what Rihanna comes up with next year.

Beyonce's Super Bowl performance exposed how weak her catalog really is. Her song selection may have seemed poor, but that's because her body of work is lacking for an artist of her caliber.

"Single Ladies" is her most iconic anthem song (and she has plenty of anthem songs) so it made sense that she sung that one. But really, what else could she have song...Ring the Alarm, Irreplaceable, Freakum Dress, Diva, If I Were A Boy??? The best she could do was Crazy In Love, Single Ladies, Halo and the medley of D.C. song and that speaks volume.

I was thinking the same thing nod I didn't even recognize or remember some of those songs. She may have had many "hits",but with the exception of "Crazy In Love",those songs don't seem to have much staying power.

....

[Edited 2/4/13 9:34am]

Exactly! praise the lord or whomever, finally this is what i have been driving at for eons, i think she is talented, shes got the looks and the presence, but her music overall is no big deal, there is very little that stand-outs in that catalog, and there is the issue, someone asked me today who missed it, what did she sing?" and honestly everything seemed similar so i had to think for a bit what i heard, thats the point, I know what Prince played i knew what Tom Petty played and im not that big a fan of Tom at all, same for Madonna. To be honest that reunion SAVED a totally bland performance, people are to easily impressed with SHOW and HYPE and TALK, all over Facebook im seeing posts as she sings how on fire and on point she was etc...i watched it and said to myself, she did this on the grammies she did this on BET she did this on the MTV awards etc...all the same stuff. So to me, shes got talent, looks, persona, but nothing else to draw you in

I'm not trying to diss Beyonce or sound like someone who is a ''hater''

But peoples reactions are so over the top lol

On GMA the hosts were all like ''oh i have seen every super bowl since 1987 and this is the best one by far''

people are so easy to hype ANYTHING these day's...

Beyonce's show reminded me of Bruce... Bruce put on a great show and had amazing energy but it's all stuff we have sene before(And his song choices were meh lol ) Or you have seen before if you are a fan anywho.

Prince had the marching band and a bunch of other thing's to go along and that made it fun!

Or when Aerosmith did that show with N'Synch and Britney... i had N'Synch but it was a cool and suprising mix.

but meh to each their own i guess.

that was it in a nutshell pretty much, it was nothing that i hadnt seen beyonce do about a hundred times already, i mean the same exact style show, she has done this on BET,VH1 MTV and everyone possible awards show. There was nothing that seperated a BET awards performance from this, so i didnt get the whole dropping to the ground like she rose from the dead. BUT i do put alot of that ON the fact that people were riding the LipSynch nonsense, and that made this event a story, she benefited from that incident because it made her look like she was pulling rabbits out of her ass last night, and i dont doubt that her team pushed that lip synch story too.

I enjoyed the performance but also thought it was boring if that makes sense. lol

Bey hyped this performance up to the max so my expectation was really high.

same type oufit, hair, intro...

it seemed as though she talked more in this performance (probably to try to tell us that she's sing live lol) but I believe it was a mixed of live/pre-recorded...

when kelly came out, my eyes got stuck on her! She was bringing it...

besides CIL and EOT, I didn't like the song choices. (Baby Boy....really bey??? i totally forgot she made that song) I was ready for upgrade you, deja vu, get me bodied, or lose my breath...

Im glad jayz didn't come out lol

Exaclty EVERYONE i talked with or gave me their impressions said when KELLY came out she was the most interesting, and the reason why, she is more diverse, she may not be a big seller, household name, on magazines, married to a jerkoff, etc...but she is more interesting. To me Beyonce's catalog and music is as interesting as Golf. And then people talk about Rhianna as beyonces replacement and i cant disagree because she is just about as interesting, now if you put Mya or Amerie up there, then im interested because theyll mix it up, they may not sell, be known even, but they are interesting

I thought the Org was being a little harsh on Beyonce, but you should see what the commenters on Rolling Stone are saying. Man, they aren't cutting her any slack whatsoever. Some of the comments:

"Lip sync or no, it still sucked. If they can't get actual performers with actual talent, then bring back Up With People and marching bands. Too bad the power outage couldn't have happened at halftime."

"I was saying the same thing--power outage during half time would have been perfect!"

"I fully expected her to pull down her p*nties and start m*sturbating. I love music and I love p*rn but please don't call it quality music."

Pesronally I thought it was adequate, but didn't blow me away.

Halftime Ratings Down from Last Year

Ratings. Although Sunday’s Super Bowl broke a ratings record in metered markets, Deadline reports that Beyoncé failed top last year’s performer, Madonna, in ratings measured during the halftime-show half-hour. Beyoncé’s halftime show, which occurred in the 8 – 8:30 PM ET time slot, scored a 48.2/71.

That’s down from the 48.1/72 of Madonna’s 2012 halftime performance. Madonna had 114 million viewers, more than the actual game and Beyoncé had her ratings go from 100 Millon to 95 Millon during her halftime performance.

its the issue when u HYPE yourself like this, and if she wants to hype herself like that, expect the shots to be taken, its natural, i mean i agree on her talent, she has it obviously, the lip synch thing was all garbage, shouldnt have been a story but she played on it, used it during this event to become HYPE, it was almost like "watch the super bowl...and see if she can sing" i mean the woman has been singing live for over a decade. SO personally it was really a non event, she has the talent, but like others that have the talent, they dont have the interesting material to back it up

POST GAME: Beyonce Parties With Kelly Rowland, Ray Lewis & MJB, Speaks After Superbowl Makes TV Ratings History + Drops ROYAL Inspired TV AD For UK Tour

photo photo-1-400x393_zpsa441256d.jpg

It was the biggest night in TV history. Literally. And the biggest winners of the night--Beyonce & The Ravens--celebrated by hitting up a post game party in N.O. We've got pics and video of Beyonce right after her performance inside, plus her new Royal inspired UK TV ad...

Beyonce (and Jay-Z too) joined up with Superbowl Champs Ray Lewis, coach John Harbaugh and the Ravens team and their families for a huge post-game celebration party last night. The big game has officially been touted as the most watched TV program in ratings history.

Which means it beat out last year's numbers. *UPDATE* The NFL has posted the final numbers: 164.1 million viewers, topping the past four Superbowls and all tv programs.

The diva was spotted in a pic (above) with Ravens baller Bryant McKinnie, and yeah we see Julius back there.

Kelly Rowland and Kevin Liles also came through to celebrate with Ray Lewis and the crew.

The bash was hosted by Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti and featured a live performance by Mary J. Blige, who invited Ray up to the stage to teach her his famous “squirrel dance.”

It wasn't a bad performance but it was a typical Beyonce showcase. She does the same routines from her videos and gives a lil' extra sass to the audience. Her look and wardrobe are old hat now. Also trotting out Kelly and Michelle to acknowledge the past is getting tiresome. This was like watching all of her award show performances melded together. Entertaining, yes. Fresh, no.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

they need to scrap the superbowl halftime show once and for all

the halftime show probably caused the power outage last night, almost costing the baltimore ravens, who was destroying the 49ers before it happened, it almost cost them the game

what they need to do is cut the half-time show to standard, and whatever city is hosting the game, feature a local college/high school marching band, let them get some shine, and call it a day

40 minutes for a halftime show is entirely way too long.....

these entertainers get to perform anywhere and everywhere throughout the year.....

Also trotting out Kelly and Michelle to acknowledge the past is getting tiresome. This was like watching all of her award show performances melded together. Entertaining, yes. Fresh, no.

nod

Wow lol

lol

I just think its funny how Beyonces PR team/Superbowl officials REALLY THOUGHT more people would tune in to see Beyonce than legendary MADONNA eek

I didnt even watch Madonna's when it aired as well lol The ONLY Half time I watched on T.V. when it broadcasted was Prince. And I was just 1 years old when MJ had his lol

Its funny you posted those Beyonce pics lol

I think it is is ALSO interesting how Janet got alot of backlash for her SB halftime because of her boob (which was barely noticable ) which partially hurt her career and Beyonces halftime was more sexually explicit/provocative and she got praised for it hmmm

There definitly is alot of politics there in her undeserving success

very disapointed,

she would have been better off - i wish instead she sang " the prince song - The beautiful ones"

That's another thing. Besides her amazing Sasha Fierce tour, which I saw, she did yet another amazing job with her Glastonbury performance last year, in which she sang The Beautiful Ones beautifully!!

That makes the disappointment of the Super Bowl even bigger for me.
