As far as him working with the Roots I think it could be interesting. I haven't really enjoyed much of the music that he has made over the last decade or so, maybe working with new people could make his music more interesting? I like the sound of the Roots but often find the material lacking. Elvis is still capable of writing good to great music but the performances are often a bit too safe and polished sounding. This could be a collaboration that really works.

Hmmm before i get killed for saying this i want to say imo Elvis Costello is one of the most overrated musicians i can think of and i am not a fan at all.

No love for E.C.? Have you listened to his early albums? I guess the critics probably do overrate him but when you look at how few records he has actually sold I find it hard to view him as being overrated.

I have always found the parallels between Elvis and Prince to be interesting. They both debuted around the same time (Elvis in 1977, Prince in 1978) and they both had similar peaks (depending on how generous you want to be say 1977-1986 for Elvis and 1978-1987 for Prince). Obviously Prince is and was a much bigger commercial success, Purple Rain alone may have outsold Elvis' entire discography, but they were both extremely prolific and critical darlings. They were even labelmates for a time and I believe they both left WB in 1996.

Excellent Post.

This is why people can say anything they want about our community because to many people in our community either kisses ass or gives people to many passes. If someone wanted to work with me and they called the great legendary Ray Charles that, I would tell them where they could stick it...

Quest is a buffoon and kisses ass. He thinks his down but his a non factor in my eyes.

Thanks! lol... Quest is hella annoying. And costello is only good at hosting shows lol. I dont think Costello is a racist, but he def has some racist ideas.

To be honest, I never got Costello. Only thing I took from him is he's the guy that dare defy Lorne Michaels on SNL and decided to stop abruptly on a song they wanted him to do and he ended up doing the song he wanted to do. As far as I know SNL never invited him back for a good period.

Lorne later said he was confused by the whole thing - they hadn't asked him to play anything in particular, let alone told him NOT to play a song.

His record label wanted him to plug his new single (Less Than Zero? whichever one he started doing before breaking into RR) but instead he went into Radio Radio which hadn't been released yet.

SNL may have been annoyed that he didn't do the song they had prepared in rehearsal, worked out lighting cues, had lyrics approved by the censors etc, but it wasn't like they were trying to prevent him from singing a scandalous song about the radio.

So... I guess you got nothing. sad

LOL yeah I feel like that was one of those much ado about nothing kind of moments where something seems very important to the artist, but nobody else has any clue what he's going on about.

Because of this thread I listened to some of his stuff (couldn't really remember what it's like) and on this one he calls himself a "white nigger".

I think the song was released before the incident this thread is about. I don't know what it "proves" in the end, but at least should serve as an indication that he's been interested in using such expressions in a way that isn't straightforward at all.

I believe that "white nigger" is a derogatory term directed at the Irish. If you read the lyics it does not appear that he is referring to himself as a "white nigger" (although he does have Irish heritage, his given name was Declan Patrick MacManus).

Earlier in that decade you had John Lennon ("Woman Is the Nigger of the World") and Patti Smith ("Rock n Roll Nigger") using the word in the titles of songs. I'm not sure a white artist could do that today.

I made the comment based on the gesture he does in the video. But you're right, the lyrics do not seem to refer to anyone in particular.

There also were plenty of underground bands from the UK from that period that just loved provocation (it was their schtick - Death In June etc.). Some of those bands had jewish and gay members and they were pretending to be nazi-sympathizers and things like that.

I agree with Ms Trina. When you are drunk or angry, the truth comes out. Lawd knows, when my Uncle Teddy was drunk, the truth came out-well, drunk, sober or angry, the truth always came out with him.

But as far as "Brother Questlove", I've been wanting to beat his oversized Teddy Ruxpin ass for awhile now. That man can't keep his damn mouf shut. He's like Mrs Jenkins from "In Living Color" or your 75 year old granny, whose mouth runs worst than diarrhea.

And he loves to put people on blast, but you never hear none of his business. I remember how he leaked D's song in Australia and they had a falling out for years over that.

And I love how people make excuses for Costello, maybe because he is a less asshole than that other racist, Axl Rose.

Axl Rose is not a racist at all. And before you quote "One In A Million" to me, remember that's a song - a story. If Axl Rose is a racist because of one lyric in one song, how would you classify Ice Cube, Chuck D and Tupac?

N***er & N***a are two different things. Even Ice-T & 2pac explained that years ago.

N***er is code for "black trash". THAT is what makes it a racial slur and most likely will get plenty of non-black people beat up. no no no!

N***a is code for Never Ignorant, Getting Goals Accomplish. wink

By THAT^ understanding. then no recording artists should have ever have anything to do with Jimmy Iovine. Remember, he was the main producers for Patti Smith's song, Rock & Roll N***er.

But of course, Dr.Dre, 2pac, Eminem, 50Cent, The Black Eyed Peas, and The Pussycat Dolls would all disagree with you.

Axl is a racist, as well as crazy as hell.

In that song One In A Million, Axl was only dissed the black folks in his hometown. But Slash tried to warned him that the song was not going to go well to the ears of black folks outside of Axl's hometown. Being the asshole he already been, Axl wanted the track on GNR Lies anyway.

I really don't care what "they" think. The artist you've listed, I don't listen to and one in particular I don't know who he, she or they are. To be Black and unconscious is to be Black and dead. Again it goes a long way and explaining why "we" live in the nihilistic conditions we do now. By and larg if we had to depend on this generation of Black's to get us off the back of bus, we'd still be there. Clueless people can make your life unsafe.

To each his or her own but I was raised in a household that practiced you are only as good as the company you keep.

The people you've mentioned are they suppose to be committee of credibility? Isn't Dr. Dre the coward who beat the shit out of a female DJ or writer who objected to NWA lyrics? (by the way, he still lying about what he did.) 50 cents: "Yeah I sold some drugs... "People expected me to finish high school and graduate from college to buy a car? I wanted a car now." 2pac who lived by the sword and was killed by it; a grown man involving himself in some he said he said bullshit.

wow, deep.

lol Well damn, when you put it like that! That list is a veritable rouge's gallery. Anyway, it's true that Dre beat down Dee Barnes, host of "Pump It Up" back around 1990 or so

tho I don't think the reason you gave is why he did it.

That said, almost all of these famous artists are screwed up in their personal lives and beliefs, so why do people always seem so surprised when they show their asses?
