Can Your Favorite Rapper Do This? "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

He definitely has more musical skills than DJ Quik & RZA. They can only play keyboard synths/workstations & drum machines. [Edited 12/24/12 19:53pm]

There are definitely more rap musicians than people think and Pharrell when he does instrumentation is usually on some rock-type shit but he still counts.
I have to argue that people like DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash, while not rappers, contributed to instrumentation as far as rap music is concerned. People sometimes don't think rap acts or producers can be musicians but there have been exceptions. I think Shock G's a musician too.

Oh yeah, Shock is a dope musician. Flavor Flav also too (yeah boi!) PRINCE: Always and Forever

Ah yeah I forgot Flav can play drums, piano and (I believe) bass. I think it's said he played instruments on Public Enemy's albums. [Edited 12/25/12 9:30am]

What he's doing is cool. But he'll never make it big doing that dated conscious hip hop he's doing. Now days, this isn't allowed.....Talent & wisdom, that is. So, in all honesty, I could care less if my favorite rappers could do that or not. But I applaud his efforts nonetheless..... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

The guy's not just an average keyboard player. There is a difference between being able to play an instrument and being able to play it on that level.

I've never seen Quik play guitar or bass, that's why.

You're too busy watching Griff videos so I see why.

I saw him play a little piano once, only a very short clip and nothing great. I think he can play guitar and bass, but I think Robert Bacon does most of that on his tracks. I think DJ Quik did usually play his own synths though.

They sure can. Fatback could do all that and even more. It just took a lot more of them to do it.

It's a nice track, dude is very talented..... Wonder if he'll make a rap about the industry idiots who would never sign him as an act, because he's too positive (conscience) and "they" decided the kids don't need to hear that kind of music .... Like Lupe Fiasco's "Dumb it Down"....

Fatback was a (funk) band that did the live music and rap thing years before The Roots did.

Consciousness is NEVER a trend, regardless of how popular it is. It's not a lucrative "gimmick" so those who ARE, its typically who they REALLY are. He might not go PLATINUM with it but he can earn an honest living aka Lupe, Common, The Roots, the former Mos Def, Nas, etc. even if he has to parlay into other media to do it. At the end of the day a clear conscience and responsible use of one's gift is better than all of Rick Ross' and Kanye's "ill gotten" iced out jewelry put together

Stetsasonic and the Beastie Boys were straight rap, unlike Fatback. Some of the early groups had a band playing on their songs too like the Sugarhill Records house band or Orange Krush. Jam Master Jay played a little too. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

All these people naming all these rappers that play instruments, I wonder if anybody can mention the last album the rapper played all these alleged instruments ex. Pharell
The dude in the video is VERY talented and Im feeling his style, I wish we had more music like this out now

The Beastie Boys released this all instrumental album in 2007. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
