I think she's really relevant because of Kurt Cobain.

she did the rock n roll thing all right. But for me however, she like Marilyn of the Manson variety, they fall short, because they rely on shocking, and or their "bad" reputation. Instead of investing on the sound of their music, and i feel like i can distant both their visuals and musics apart, they don't symmerty well, truly.i feel she has written some good songs and she should be thought as a seperate identity and not should be lumped in with Cobain.

She's good but I wouldn't personally rank her in my top ten.

As a musician she is probably well below average. I don't think people like her because she is a great singer/writer/guitarist. People like her because of her personality. There are many, many other women out there with much "better" voices but the music that they create just isn't very interesting. At her best Courtney creates some great music.

She gets knocked for needing a collaborator/coordinator to help facilitate her creative process, but she's definitely a talented, intelligent woman no matter what craziness is attributed to her. Her voice reminds me of Stevie Nicks during much of Celebrity Skin, which is probably one of my favourite albums ever.

I can't really tell if a person is a great musician or not.

I either like or hate the music.

I like her writing quite a bit actually.

Her singing is ok, her guitar playing is average.

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

Because she always had her shit planned I think such as "Ok we are going on Dave Letterman....we will go and be interviewed with Kurt Loder" etc. Her plans etc and her set up situations with old dudes or dudes in the establishment who are pushovers anyways. Shed never be without her entoruage Im sure in a real people situation imo. Which is why you saw her AND Loder shook when Courtney threw her compact up at them lmao. Madonna was like 'please dont let her up.." lookin where the security was lmao. Fug that ho.

She's not that great in terms of musicianship. She is a fantastic writer and has a once-brilliant mind (sadly addled by drugs now) and a keen ear for melody. However, she is not the greatest guitar player and far too often she forsakes playing her guitar in order to use it as a necklace.

Vocally-speaking, she had one of the most gorgeous and tortured female vocals of all time. I dig fucked up vocals (Amy Winehouse, Brody Dalle, C.Love, Joplin). She had a howl on her that made her male contemporaries shudder. "Violet" has to be one of the best female rock vocals ever committed to tape. Of course, it is ravaged by cigarettes and cracksmoke nowadays. As you can hear from that Faux-Hole album, she has long since lost her signature growl.

Courtney happens to be up in my top 5 with Prince, Amy, Bowie, and Kurt.

Edit: That last Faux-Hole album is a real trainwreck, btw. A few decent tracks which would've been considered "filler" in the days of Eric Erlandson.

But her solo album, America's Sweetheart, has a bunch of tracks that began during the final Hole sessions. The album feels much more like a continuation on the journey from Celebrity Skin and has some killer tracks on it. It got slept on pretty hard because of her personal troubles at the time. But I always thought that the promo for the album ("Courtney Love is a Virgin.") was so genius and really should've carried the album skyward.

I agree with Spinlight, she had great potential, but the drugs really took atoll on her mind and vocals. She had some great lyrics early on.

I think she's incredibly talented, and Hole's catalog is mostly excellent. "Live Through This" and "Celebrity Skin" are phenomenal albums. Also, she's incrediblly intelligent - Does anyone remember her speech about Napster given in 2000?

If not, I suggest you read the transcript here:
