Saw Usher perform. No big whoop. rolleyes neutral

I guess the big highlight of this awards show is the fact that this is the first AMA show since Dick Clark died. He created this awards show when ABC lost the rights to televise the Grammys to CBS back in 1972. So they are going to show clips of past performances.

The AMA's are done and have been just as long as the MTV era has been done, there really is no need for this show anymore, why showcase how bad the industry is? I see nothing on these shows where im going "oh thats new" "oh i want to buy that artist" is just straight up SUB PAR talent, there is no sugar coating it anymore people, YES every time period has had its share of SHIT, but when the SHIT is your "star artists" its time to go.

I think these music awards shows should only be shown on music channels. The same way sports should only be on sports channels. There was no new episode of Once Upon a Time because of the AMAs.

I flipped it on a few times, only to see mediocre singers, whom I didn't even know, sing boring songs. No thanks. Luckily there was a Law and Order SVU marathon on.

I'm really curious as to what the viewership is of shows like this. I have three teens in my house, who didn't even turn on the TV last night. Just looked it up...according to TVbythenumbers, the AMAs were the lowest rating telecast of the show ever.

The last good thing to happen to this show was MJ winning 4 awards in death, or 3, whatever number

MJ is now gone and Dick Clark is gone too, no use, I agree.

Is it just me, or did a lot of posters on this thread wake up and guzzle a huge helping of this:

Now I won't come on here and say that Justin Bieber is the next incarnation of Elvis, Michael Jackson, Elton John. etc., but the show last night wasn't quite as god awful as you people are making out to be. If I had any real complaints about the AMA's last night, it would be that the show was pretty bland. neutral bored Having said that, I thought Pink, Kelly Clarkson, and Carrie Underwood each gave a decent performance last night. Usher was just meh, Taylor Swift was highly overrated as she has been for a while, and Swizz Beatz needs to stay behind in the studio.

I think the AMA's, and for that matter The Grammys and the MTV VMA's, are the result of the current cultural and generational environment in music. The young people of the late 60's had the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and a lot of edgy rock to listen to. Contrary to what people say now in hindsight, the mainstream hated those groups but kids loved them to death. Music was not only something you listened to; it defined a generation's taste and was the soundtrack to their lives. That was true of kids in the 1970's who listened to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Kiss, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, or those people who listened to soul and funk music. Music then also made a statement about empowerment, and it scared the status quo. I even remember hearing about Led Zeppelin being a devil worshipping band, and some religiousl zealots claimed that KISS was and acronym which stood for "Knights in Satan's Service."

Likewise, in the 80's me and many of my generation listened to Prince, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bon Jovi, and everything from new wave to hair metal, and the music was as decadent as the times they performed in. Prince and Madonna shoicked people with their sexual antics on stage, and the hair bands wore androgyny on their sleeves. Then the 90's came, and the music did a 180, with Nirvana and grunge music telling the story of a disaffected youth culture while gangsta rap exploded in popularity, and the mainstream wailed about how America's youth were going to hell in a handbasket.

Everything changed though around the time of the new millennium. The music became too calculated and/or too sanitized. Boy bands like the Backstreet Boys and 'Nsync became the standard of masculinity while Britney Spears and Christina Aguliera became the sexy pop tarts who cated to a generaton of teen girls, but even then their sexuality seemed forced and contrived compared to their predecessors. Even those artists who tried to be shocking and controversial just aped at stuff that was done by other artists years ago.

But the biggest change was technology itself. The rise of Napster and file sharing, plus the rise of platforms like MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter basically took the place of music in the lives of yoiung people. While popular music defined the tastes of past generations, it appears that for this generation music is just another thing along with social media. In fact, it was social media that broke Justin Bieber to the masses, and it is breaking othet artists like Carly Rae Jepsen and that "Gangnam Style" guy. Buzzworthiness in the music scene these days is not about how many albums you sell but how many hits you get on YouTube.

So while people are are lamenting how far the music scene has sunk, remmeber that the generation listening to this has their own take on this. After all, today's youth don't recognize who Paul McCartney is and why he was such a huge deal in the past.

Aside from MC Hammer making an appearance and Mr. Stevie Wonder, the only really notably great performance of the night was P!nk. I don't care what anyone says about this woman. She killed it with the showmanship and sang live the entire time. So, to all those mofos who say that it's hard to sing and dance at the same time thus okaying these lip-syncing dipshits, obviously it didn't seem to extremely difficult for P!nk to pull it off while doing some damn hard athletic choreography. Next time I see somone say this shit, I'm gonna direct them to P!nk's multiple LIVE performances over the past few years so they can kindly shut the hell up with this lame ass excuse for sorry ass artists who are either just simply being lazy or really aren't all that great to be getting the loads of praise they receive. Either she's superhuman; a robot; or just damn outstanding at live performing.

I wish someone would praise another lip-syncer on this forum so I can wail on them. hmph!

I can't say that I am the biggest fan of Pink but you cannot deny that she brings it everytime. She sings, she performs, she doesn't look like she's going away anytime soon. Good for her, mad props!
