bored

That doesnt prove anything, he proved that he was a good live singer numerous of times and I highly doubt someone like Freddie would have to lip sing being he didnt do high energy dancing/choregraphy like MJ did.

"[James Brown] and Tina Turner got into a thing there. Ike [Turner] used to watch us a lot. He’d hang around with pencil and pad. We didn’t know what he was writing about but he knew what he was writing about. He was figuring these things out. We were all together on this show, and James and Tina got into ‘Please, Please, Please’. So they went back and forth with ‘Please, Please’ and Tina got up on the piano and fly off that piano into a split, while she was into her split, James jumps over her head into a split. Tina was… that woman was something else. Every time James come off with something, she’d come right back at him. He wasn’t gonna let her outdo him, and she wasn’t gonna let him outdo her. Boy, let me tell you, the Flames couldn’t do nothing but just get out of the way. Ike did too. He didn’t understand it himself. He said ‘I ain’t never seen Tina like this.’ Tina just had the fire in her eyes that night. She was gonna show this man. But you know James. He’s not about to be beaten, especially by a woman. So they were at each other’s throat and it was one of the best shows you ever wanna see. The people went crazy. It’s horrible that they didn’t have no cameras back then to film it all. The world has missed a whole lotta great stuff."

Love his voice and his energy but the only thing he did that was wild was drop violently to the ground. Iggy Pop toppled him as far as wild antics.

But honestly of the new, younger set, she sets the bar pretty high.

Best performer from recent years.

Freddie's in my Top 3.

The leaked recordings of him with MJ showed up Michael's weak voice.

What records? cool
he had a hard time sometimes, especially in the 90's, but only from 1979 to 1981, he gave with The Jacksons more than 200 live shows. In my opinion, even this is enough to evaluate his vocal. wink

Around the time of her last album coming out Courtney Love (I know I know) was asked about her promotion and touring for the album and she mentioned how she wasn't looking forward to touring the states because American audiences expected too much from their performers, saying that a strong performance wasn't enough but that you had to give a part of your soul to satisfy them. I suppose it's like when Nicole Kidman did "Moulin Rouge" and the rumor was going around that she gave everything to that role short of setting herself on fire.

Do we expect too much from our live performers as Ms. Love suggests?

^ Courtney can't even perform her damn self lol... that being said, performers who are into their craft will always go for the gut, that's just natural.

he was famous only for his drunken antics, I wouldn't call him a frontman

the guy HATED the stage, and there are videos out there which transmit that hate

the guy was a poet and a singer, not a frontman

Yeah I got the impression that Courtney (and overseas audiences) just want you to show up and they're happy.

Thanks 4 the love, guys. Very interesting, ur right Freddie played the massiveness of stadiums, like overy a million in Rio. I think hes better than Jackson, because hes more of an all rounder. Remember he wrote of Queens most good songs.

I think the threads a bit of a joke, with Tina Turner and Beyoncé comparing 2 Freddie, not in same league.

To be honest, there is no "greatest". It's just opinion.

IMHO, my top five showmen list (in popular music only, that is) includes James, MJ, Prince, Robert Plant and Freddie in that order.

These were the five that came into my head.

Robert Plant's voice is haunting whilst Freddie's stage prescence is mesmerizing.

James Brown and MJ are simply effortless and Prince, well Prince is the ultimate performer.

I envy those who got to see people like James Brown and Tina Turner live.

I consider Whitney to be a great performer/showman. She wasn't much of a dancer, but she could could perform her ass off.

Comparing Freddy Mercury to Michael Jackson is like comparing...Freddy Mercury to Michael Jackson.

They are too different to compare. Michael was the lead singer in a group before he became a solo artist. Freddie was the front man of a rock band. Two entirely different positions that have similarities, but even more differences. There is (was) definitely room for both.

Well technically they weren't comparing, they were just giving their opinions. It would be unfair to compare.

Exactly. And anyone claiming that this or the other is the best or greatest is just plain ridiculous. To claim "one of the greatest"... fair enough, but to claim one as the greatest is just childish bs.

Exactly. It's too much child play when people go on about someone being "the greatest" and all that.

Freddie Mercury was a tremendous showman but when you start talking about "of all time" to me that means someone who is influential too. I can see James Brown and Michael Jackson in so many artists who "attempt" to be great showmen. To help me understand the impact of Freddie Mercury can someone list the artists whose stage performance he has influenced? I am sure there are many I have not taken the time to study live. Thanks
