Ma used to have this along with William DeVaghan's "Figures Can't Calculate" on a heavy back-to-back rotation, growing up I used to think they were the same guy.

'Philly sound' R&B singer Major Harris dies at 65

By MICHAEL FELBERBAUM
Associated Press / November 9, 2012

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Major Harris, a former member of the ‘‘Philadelphia sound’’ soul group the Delfonics and singer of the 1975 hit ‘‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait,’’ has died in Richmond. He was 65.

His sister, Catherine Thomas, told The Associated Press that Harris passed away Friday morning from congestive heart and lung failure after being rushed to a hospital.

The Richmond native was born Feb. 9, 1947, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a guitarist and his mother led the church choir, Thomas said.

In his teens, Harris was tall for his age and was able to get into clubs to watch musicians perform, she said.

‘‘He always appeared to be older, which gave him a lot of ins to a lot of older places,’’ Thomas joked.

She said he didn’t drink in the clubs back then, but he was pursuing his career. Music, she said, ‘‘was his life.’’

Harris made the rounds with several music groups in the 1960s, including the Charmers, Frankie Lymon’s Teenagers and Nat Turner’s Rebellion.

He then joined the Delfonics in the early 1970s, replacing Randy Cain in the group known for their hits ‘‘La-La (Means I Love You)’’ and ‘‘Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time).’’

Harris left the group in 1974 to pursue a solo career. He recorded a string of R&B singles, including ‘‘Love Won’t Let Me Wait,’’ which peaked at No. 5 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified as a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America. The song was covered by Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams in 1994 and again by Luther Vandross on his 1988 album ‘‘Any Love.’’

Harris last performed in 2011 at a reunion show with some of the members of the Delfonics, Thomas said.

I will admit, because I am ashamed, that as well as I knew the song "Love Won't Let Me Wait", and as much as I have loved hearing it through the years, and as many memories as it brings back when I hear it, I never gave any thought to who it was that actually sang the 1975 hit. And now, the man is gone.

To make amends (as I feel it's better to be learning of him late, than to have never known him at all), I've just added "My Way - Major Harris" to my Wish List for purchase. And may Major Harris rest in peace.

I plead ignorance about The Delfonics connection as well. His solo hit was classic. RIP!

I had the pleasure of meeting Major Harris when he lived in my building a few years ago. I didn't know who he was for a while until one day I decided to talk to him.Because I felt sorry for him. He was in really bad shape. He told me he had a seizure & was passed out on a street until someone found him. He asked me if I ever heard of the Delfonics. I guess he thought I was too young to know. He then told me he was a member of the group. Then he told me about the song " Love won't let me wait". I actually thought he was "On the short bus". I listened to him, but didn't believe him.Especially when he said he was thinking about going back on tour in Europe. There was no way in the shape he was in. I looked his name up on the internet & recognised his eyes.It was him! Then one day he tried to sell some clothes to me & I bought a jacket from him which I still have. I feel bad because I avoided him after that. I just didn't know what to say to him. I couldn't understand why he let himself go like that..

Its sad these 70's soul singers are left broke with no where to go. This man was homeless..

R.I.P. Major Harris

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince
