Exactly. It ain't that serious. Plus, when you try to force yourself to like something you really don't like, you're no longer being yourself as an individual and becoming what others think you should be. Andy is a four letter word.

Now THIS is a good idea! GunsHalen started a thread about musicians whose voice you don't like and I thought about doing the opposite: love the voice, not the music. Tom Jones, anyone? Freddy Mercury. When I was in hi school all the (cool) guys were into Queen and U2 (another good example, just like Springsteen) but by then I was already diggin' James Brown and Sly... Dire Straits also were huge in the 1980s and Mark Knopfler was & is playing with my man Bob Dylan, but...it just doesn't mean anything to me... The Beatles... LiLi, if you & I had been around in the 1960s, you would have been a Beatles-girl and me a Stones boy! Miles Davis...never got beyond Kind of Blue. Billy Holliday, a legend for sure, I have a double cd that I just don't listen to. Stevie Wonder... Living for the City is ffffonnnkayyy!!! I just Called to Say I Love You is too much sweet pop music for me. I know Nirvana and Pearljam meant a lot to a lot of people, but I never got it. Same with Amy Winehouse and Adele. And I never understood why punks were into reggae. Bob Marley wrote some good songs, but when I hear Stir it up, I always get the feeling it's being played too slow. Guess that wraps it up 4 now, maybe more later, good idea for a thread, Lily!

not a particular artist, but .... classical music.

^Interesting. My newspaper included a free classical cd this weekend, so I listened to some Mozart and Mahler. I found it really beautiful, but after that I put on some Muddy Waters (a classic in his own right!) and that just made me FEEL better. So I don't think I'll switch from rock to opera in the near future. But it's always good to listen to some music you wouldn't normally listen to

After giving it much thought, I would like to be a fan of Madonna. She strikes me as smart businesswoman, and I admire that but I find her voice just terrible.

probably seems like sacrilege to the whole world it seems that has drunk their kool aid for decades but i'm content to pass thru the earth w/o ever having heard a Beatles album! a few inescapable, ubiquitous singles have confirmed that i'm not missing much.
Bowie - marginal voice, couple tracks from Let's Dance (listened to Station to Station single per someone from The Org's recommendation and wanted to cut my ears off) Stones - i like my rock FONKAY and if there's not LOTS more where Miss U comes from, i'm good Fiona Apple - I've had my buddy's Tidal for months and can't make it pass 3-4 trax
too many others to name!

Marsha Ambrosius. I want to like her, and I actually liked her when she was with Floetry, but as a solo artist, her voice irritates the hell out of me. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

When I was going through a classic soul phase last year, I could not get in to:
Al Green
I reallty tried, but it just wasn't happening. I like a few of his songs, and thats about it.

low is from bowie's berlin phase, it's quite challenging to listen to. if you want classic songwriting i would suggest alladin sane and ziggy stardust. if they don't float your boat i doubt anything by bowie will. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

I had always wanted to be born in the 50's that all the best music accompanied my youth, and I have seen the emergence and development of the greatest artists ever. But now I realize that in that case I would now not 20 years old, and about 60 .... Well, it's better to be young and enjoy the music in retrospect.

Great thread.....i've BEEN wanting to be convinced on 4 artists that i can think of right now: -TEENA MARIE (vocally). i STILL can't see how she "sounds like a sista"; she just sounds Broadway to me. Nobody in mind.
If I'm not a fan, I won't waste my time figuring out "why".
Exactly. It ain't that serious. Plus, when you try to force yourself to like something you really don't like, you're no longer being yourself as an individual and becoming what others think you should be. Lol man yall say that but here's one: i can't get into (peak) Prince circa Dirty Mind. Baow! Dirty Mind is a big chunk of WTF to me; i don't know why people say it's what really get him shine. So the reason i laugh at the notion of "being an individual" is because people always assume you have low standards if you don't like some of Prince's hits or albums during his peak.

It's what your flavor is it doesn't mean whatever you like is any better or less than what I dig its just a matter of taste. Some people just like country music who are you to say its garbage just cuz you don't have the ear for it. People that do that are music snobs and are ridiculous. It's like me to tell someone oh you don't like lobster well you have no taste. Not everyone has the same palette. I don't get mf's that think they are superior music listener because you don't like what they like. It's a joke really. Love41Another 💜

Hmm Lily I think you'd really enjoy classical music if you start with the right era/artist! Or taking the time to really learn how it originated whether through a music course or books may help too Classical music is anything but boring and simple imo, it contains the most wide range of instruments and I particularly love how unpredictable and unbiased it really is compared to a lot of modern "songs" we're used to, whether it's pop or rock or RnB that mostly use the same formula with limited structure. In general I don't really believe anyone should force his/herself to like certain genre but of all types of music, I'd say classic music is definitely worth it. Though I'm a very casual classic listener I'm glad I was able to at least get into it and understand the fundamental level of it. (In my case it was through music classes I took at college + my parents CDs & itunes classic radio stations lol) I'm still learning and trying to discover more!

Janet Jackson... I love pretty much all the other Jacksons, lol, but I can't get through a full album of hers and really enjoy it - not even her best-rated ones. I think it's partly because I'm not a huge fan of the Jam/Lewis sound, or a lot of later '80s/early '90s R&B.
