Billboard Shakes Up Genre Charts with New Methodology Billboard today unveils new methodology for the long-standing Hot Country Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Latin Songs charts. Each receive a major consumer-influenced face-lift, as digital download sales (tracked by Nielsen SoundScan) and streaming data (tracked by Nielsen BDS from such services as Spotify, Muve, Slacker, Rhapsody, Rdio and Xbox Music, among others) will now be factored into the 50-position rankings, along with existing radio airplay data monitored by Nielsen BDS. The makeovers will enable these charts to match the methodology applied to Billboard's signature all-genre songs ranking, the Billboard Hot 100.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Finally an r&b chart!! "The blacks" will no longer be combined into one chart! It always pisses me off how they do that. Rap is nothing like r&b aside from the fact that most of the artists happen to be black. I've always viewed the Urban AC chart as the true r&b chart anyway.
I don't think radio airplay should count toward rankings at all though. Just because a song is played on the radio doesn't mean anyone likes the song or even requested it. They play Katy Perry every 25 mins on this one station we have here. I KNOW they aren't getting that many requests for that. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Progress however a black girl who sings dance/pop tops the first R&B chart. is this because of heavy air play on 'r&b' stations? I don't get it Rihanna makea pop music like Katy and Britney, Aguilera on the other hand makes more r&b sounding music and is nowhere on the R&B charts

It's not about the type of music an "artist" makes, it's about what formats play their music. Christina A. is a very soulful singer and does r&b flavored music, but she is not an r&b artist. However, Rihanna fits in the same mold. She charts on the r&b side, but her music is straight pop. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Wake me up when Billboard actually tracks everything including WEBSITES of the artists that sell direct to the consumer, till then its still not "a change in thinking" if they are gonna embrace "streams" and shit like that, actual purchases to me mean more. Pretty much.
The problem is most of the artists that chart these charts are not BIG album in hand sellers so billboard is doing this to count the most used media for sales.... its really a cop out and makes the problem worse.

Is there really a need for a separate R&B chart? Urban AC already fits that mold.

Yeah I think it's called an Adult R&B chart...

I think it makes more sense to have a chart based on streams these days than AIRPLAY. Of course both can be doctored and manipulated but it is just a way to track what people are listening to.
