Indeed. The trio were essential in their own ways. Sting was the face, and voice, and when he left, the band was done, but it would have been done if either Stewart or Andy had left.
Andy's playing, particularly on Outlandos D'Amour and Ghost In The Machine, was stellar.

Even though his stature seems to have diminished over the years, a pathetically drunk Eddie still plays better than we could ever dream to play. And his ability to produce otherworldly sounds with the guitar is up there with Jimi IMO (though i prefer Jimi's music by a longshot)

I'll always drop in David Hidalgo from Los Lobos because he has his homies, Cesar Rosas and Louie Perez, backing him up so he can freak as he likes.
Lou Reed always does it right to me on his 10 min. forays... Ultimate garage.
Buddy Holly because he was so macho.
John Fogerty beacause the Cholos groove to him.
