After spending the beginning of the 80s doing background vocals and taking whatever small opportunities she could while touring night clubs with her mother, she caught the eye of Clive Davis. They worked on her debut album for 2 years before releasing it in February of 1985. The album sold poorly at first and failed to make an impact.
After "You Give Good Love" and "Saving All My Love For You" topped the charts, the album began selling. "How Will I Know" would then introduce her to the MTV generation while "Greatest Love of All" would become her biggest hit. In 1986, a whole year after its initial release, Whitney Houston had the #1 album and stayed there for 14 weeks. All young girls wanted to be like her, all the guys wanted to date her. Her videos were all over MTV and radio. She won her first Grammy and countless other awards.
1986 marked the year that Whitney (The Voice) Houston became an international superstar. She set the new standard for singing and the shadow of her technique still, to this day, looms over virtually every male and female singer in pop and R&B music.
