Bjork may be....

One of my favorite female artsits now. I was away for a whole week in China and on the plain rides I decided to listen to the 3 Bjork albums on my ipod (Debut, Post, and Greatest Hits). I never was a big fan of her before. I thought she sucked at singing and only had a couple of good songs (I bought Debut for Venus As A Boy and Post for Army Of Me) but now my opinion has changed directions (like it often does) and now I love her! Any other Bjork fans here and if so any album suggestions? I'm thinking about getting Vespertine but I don't know where to go from there, so any help will be appreciated biggrin

Homogenic, along with Debut and Post is as good a trio of pop albums you'll find by anyone. I wasn't so keen on Vespertine and I fell off her not long after - she got a bit esoteric even for my taste.

I love her Greatest Hits dvd collection as well - it's one of the most impressive aspects of her artistry.

My favourite video of all time

You guys are all going to freak out when I say this but until this past week I didn't like All Is Full Of Love a lot boxed I LOOOVE it now! I'm not a big fan of the other tracks from Homogenic that I've heard on Greatest Hits though, are the tracks similar to those? BTW AIFOL definetly has one of the best music videos ever made nod nod

I just sold a huge amount of Bjork cd's and vinyl. Pity you missed it.

Anyway, Debut, Post and Homogenic. The other albums are shit, and it's only the large number of remixes that kept me listening.

Enjoy your journey.

Vespertine.

Although the early albums are all extremely good, Vespertine
is still my favorit. It's an experience, not just an album.

Absolutely! Cracks me up how much love Debut, Post and Homogenic get (IMO, because they're more accessible). And admittedly, Homogenic is my second favorite of hers. But there's no question in my mind about her peak... Verspertine. Amazing album! And as IstenSzek pointed out here, it's an experience. It should be consumed as one piece, IMO. Stunning. Follow the listening experience with her live DVD from that tour.

It's pure emotion. Bundles of energy. Loads of intimacy.

I did feel like the 'bad fan' for not embracing Vespertine. The live DVD definitely added to the album for me. I know it's meant to be her more personal and intimate - I'm just not in love with the songs as much as her first 3 albums - yes probably because they are less acccessible - which she was so good at it!!!

I think she said something really interesting in that dvd documentary - it's not verbatim but it's the general idea.

As an artist the thing is you want to give - so you give your arm or your leg but sometimes you are giving things that people didn't want in the first place.

I didn't want a video of a close up of her face with dripping fluids going in and out of facial orifices - I get it, it's internal, it's intimate but you look like you made a video with boogers coming out of your nose - why would I watch that?

And as far as the abstracted fellatio and topless dress for Pagan Poetry? Waaay too much information Bjork.

She hit her peak with Homogenic and Vespertine.

Debut is the most conventional of her albums so I can understand why people may like that one more and not be into her later stuff.

Biophilia is worth hearing if you're looking for something completely different.

The Drawing Restraint 9 soundtrack is for hardcore fans only.

Don't feel bad dude. it took me years to finally get Verspertine, but when I got it boy did it click. It's now my second favorite Bjork Album. It's almost flawless.

My list is:

Homogenic

Vespertine

Post

Medulla - very underrated

Volta

Debut

Biophilia (she lost me with this one, so dissapointed)

I think I only listened to that once.

Another hardcore fan fav is Gling Glo, it's a fun wee collection of Icelandic ditties. Not strictly a Bjork solo album though. I had a fantastic bootleg of her singing Gling Glo tracks and other traditional Icelandic tunes with a pianist, drummer and another dude on double bass, and for the life of me I can't track it down, it must have been deleted at some point.

I think i have only listened to Drawing Restraint 9 once myself. But I sat through the movie twice so that may count as hearing it three times.

I know of Gling Glo, but never heard the actual album.

Most of the tracks on Gling Glo are sung in Icelandic, but it's very charming, an aquired taste I suppose. Fluent Icelandic an advantage. lol

Drawing Restraint 9 has it's moments though. "gratitude" and "ambergris march" are amongst

my favorit bjork tracks. although one is an instrumental and the other one features a guest on

vocals instead of bjork lol

"storm" and "cetacea" aren't bad either. and i've only ever heard "petrolatum" once, since it

was a bonus track or something that isn't on the album (it's on the 5.1 release i think) but i'm

fairly certain i liked that one too smile

but apart from "gratitude" or "ambergris march" i have to admit, there is nothing on that album

that you could listen to more than 3 times in a row without wanting to stab yourself in the ear nod

I was being a good friend. I had already seen the movie with co-workers and then told a friend who was the biggest Björk fan in the world about it and she didn't want to go see it alone so I saw it again with her.
