I just think the site can be split in half with one talking about music NEW and OLD and the other half talking about gossip. I think that is more important being this site alot of times doesnt even feel like a music site.

Aren't more people interested in gossip though? The Green Day thread was started a couple of days ago and it already has more views than 50 music topics started before it put together, which average less than 20 views each. Look at those Unsung threads. I've seen people say if a particular act has no dirt/scandal and had a happy life, then the episode is boring. lol Unsung itself doesn't really talk about music, and neither did Behind The Music. If folks were really that interested in music topics, then they wouldn't die quickly. They'd last just as long as the gossip threads. It doesn't make a lot of sense to make a separate music only discussion section, it wouldn't get any more traffic than it does now. It'll be just as dead as the Non-Michael music section at MJJC. razz

I didn't even think about it like that until you said it. lol

It is the nature of gossip to be relatively hot in the moment, so I understand why it burns up page one of this forum.

But if I'm ever looking for general music discussion, it can usually still be found on the first or second page.

Me myself I appreciate both. Sometimes the making of music includes inspiration from these types of life events. Nas' divorce, Eminem's rehab (didn't he name an album Rehab?), even Prince's religion, it can help us understand the music. It can help us understand why Russian Roulette was such a dark period without Rihanna explaining it 3 years later to Oprah.

I don't think anything good ever resulted from splitting subforums into smaller subforums on the discussion forum websites that I've been a member on. Sites that have done that might have achieved a sense of order, but the subforums have become inactive in a few months after the splitting.

Splitting this forum into "music" and "gossip" subforums would seem pretentious at best. C'mon. I can understand why a lot of people might want to get rid of the show business discussions, but just think how stupid it would look if we really had a dedicated subforum for GOSSIP (?!?) here.

I agree. Having a lot of subforums is not a good thing. As it is, there's a few dead and/or pointless subforums on this site.

It isn't pretentious to have a different forum for other music, obviously.
T call another forum music Gossip... Well if you have a problem with that word think of a new one.

We have the forums politics and religion and general discussion. Do you find that silly and pretentious? Which is the "sub forum) there?

There's enough people here who'd appreciate a split.

I see no reason for a separate forum. When you stick to "just the facts ma'am" about the music and music only, you lose the human presence of being in a forum. I realize that a lot of people these days are used to a computers not only making their music, but now a lot of people are used to some sort of computer playing their music for them such as an ipod, iphone, or whatever other kind of "i" gadget there is these days to play their music exclusive for them and them only with no other human contact involved except their own contact to push the buttons to hear what they want to hear. Yeah, we've always had records, tapes, and CDs to entertain ourselves exclusively but we also turned to radio for the feel of some sort of live human presence to entertain us and now the internet has taken that place. Internet forums are now the human presence that radio used to be and the radio DJs didn't just announce the songs and move on, at least the fun ones didn't. They not only announced the songs but sometimes they would talk about them, joke about them, and sometimes even make comments that didn't have anything to do with the song whatsoever, just whatever they felt spontaneously. That was the difference in being around a live person as opposed to a mechanical jukebox just sticking to the songs and the songs only. The only difference is, now we can interact with each other rather than just listening to only the DJ's personality.

If you want just generic entertainment, you can always search and find whatever you want by going to an entertainer's website and reading their biography on their life, their music, and how they made the music. You can read whatever you want about their music, and music alone, until you're heart's content. But if you want the presence of live human beings, you go to a forum and discuss the music with other people. People aren't books and encyclopedias that just stick to the facts and the facts only, they are individuals with their own minds, opinions, and personalities and it's when the different personalities come out, that you're getting the presence of the live human touch rather than just reading about someone on an official site, book, or magazine. The reason for going to a forum in the first place is not just to learn something because there's various other ways to do that all within a google search. It's for human contact with other people and when you meet up with friends in person, do you just stick to the facts and the facts only? No, you don't. You come to talk about something and also enjoy each other's company. It's kinda like going to a card game. The main purpose is to play cards but Lord knows, sometimes you get into all sorts of discussions while you're playing cards.

We've always gossipped here at the org. The reason that it is now more gossip than music is because hell, just look at what type of artists are being discussed these days. The only thing entertaining about most of the artists that threads are being made about these days IS the gossip because Lord knows their music is boring as hell. Gossip isn't what's killing this section, it's the lack of threads about good music itself. But then again, we've already been there and done that several times over with threads about good music years ago so when a thread about a good song comes up nowadays, we've already discussed it years ago and about the only thing I can think of to post about the song is "Great song" and move on. This section has pretty much lived out it's glory days and most of the interesting and fun people with personalities have either left or moved over to the General Discussion section because we've pretty much discussed all the good music there is to be discussed and since there's no good new music being made anymore to discuss, it's not like there's going to be new topics that we haven't already discussed. And as far as "searching" for something new and good...uh no, fuck that. Even if you find it, it's not mainstream (which is the REAL problem) and you're the only one that has heard it so who are you going to hang out, party with, or discuss it with, yourself?

Yeah I got hold of too. Its great fun.

It was mentioned here before its release, but nobody mentioned it after it was released.

I don't think people come to the org to talk about other artists much. Music talk gets drowned by gossip threads.

I, as many others do, want that changed.

I think itd be better for both crowds.

Maybe there's not many people here that listen to David Byrne. I don't see him or Talking Heads mentioned here much. The acts I see brought up the most are Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Beatles, Rolling Stones, D'Angelo, Mint Condition, Elvis Presley, Beyonce, R. Kelly, Madonna, Van Halen, Jackson 5/Jacksons, Stevie Wonder, Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, and a few others. From what I can tell, more R&B/funk/soul acts are mentioned than other genres.

Do that many people even post in this section to warrant separate music & gossip? There's more people that post in the Prince section, that I've never seen in here. There's not that much traffic in the 'associate acts' section either. There's a higher ratio of music threads in this section than gossip, the gossip threads just last longer on the 1st page.

I think some folks just post to complain. When new music is posted separately on its own thread, it's hardly posted as Micky himself pointed out.

Yeah, there's those "today's music is no good" threads and the awards/Hall Of Fame topics which some claim they don't care about or don't mean anything, but yet always comment in them. Why talk about something you don't care about? On Youtube, people click on videos just to say the song or act sucks. I've seen old video clips from 1960's music shows like American Bandstand, and people complaining about the lipsyncing. lol Shouldn't they be happy that the footage exists at all, especially since the networks often taped over the programs back then.

Like those "500 songs/albums" threads. It's just the same few people posting over and over. Why don't these other "music" folks recommend anything? razz

Probably because some folks have lives outside of Prince.org and don't feel the

need to prove anything by posting new music or alternatives to what's generally posted here to stroke one's ego. I like what Timmy's

doing. A few of the songs there i already know about. I learned about Frank McCombs

here at the org. I have songs in my head occasionally that i want to post here but

after a hard day's work and the occasional afternoon activities you are generally

priority. lol If i post a Dexter Wansel song and you post a Lovin Spoonful song does

that mean we're more musically cultured than the orger that posts about Lady Gaga

or Confunkshun often.

I was talking about Mjcarousel saying more people wanting to discuss music, and I said more want to gossip. There's more people posting in gossip threads than in music threads, that's why "music" is in quotes, referring to the gossiping folks. Maybe you misunderstood the comment, which was a continuation of the previous comments above.

The idea here isn't to dispute what's more popular, music or gossip.

Just to split the two. This would be a huge practical improvement.

Again I don't want to discuss gossip vs. music.

Splitting this forum into "music" and "gossip" subforums would seem pretentious at best. C'mon. I can understand why a lot of people might want to get rid of the show business discussions, but just think how stupid it would look if we really had a dedicated subforum for GOSSIP (?!?) here.

I am not interested in coming up with a better name for such a subforum as it was your idea and not mine.

To answer your question if I find the Politics & Religion and General Discussion subforums silly and pretentious. No, I don't find them silly and pretentious. They're not subforums dedicated to something as undeserving for a subforum as gossip is. You'll also have to look quite far back into the history of site why the Politics & Religion subforum exists. The political debates during the"War on Terror" were taking up the General Discussion forum and when Prince did the Rainbow Children album this site was completely taken up by flame wars about religion and race. In some ways I probably do find the subforum a bit redundant these days, but there seems to be a lot of posters that use that forum all the time. As for General Discussion, there is absolutely nothing silly or pretentious about the General Discussion forum as most forums on the Internet have a similar forum (often called "MISC").

Proceeding to split forums into subforums due some sort of semantical reasons has hardly ever helped discussion forums to survive. I agree that there's been some really annoying showbusiness threads (Mariah Carey's baby photos etc.), but they haven't taken up that much space if we're honest about it. I share your discomfort about many of those threads, but I just can't agree with your "get them out of my face" mentality. I also understand that the orgers that want to discuss artists like Mariah Carey, Eminem or Rihanna are going to discuss their personal lives as well and it would be really clumsy trying to conduct those discussion on two different forums. Like pointed out, many artists are going to be making music about their personal lives anyway. Splitting the forum into "music" and "gossip" subforums is just an idea that's not going to work in practice.

People should be just more regularly reminded that this is indeed a music board and not a show business bullshit board (seriously, fuck your baby photos).
