Peter Gabriel Celebrates 25 with So Deluxe Edition, Immersion Box
August 2012
Peter Gabriel's classic 1986 album So will be rereleased on October 23 as both an expanded 3-CD set and an expansive 5-disc (CD/DVD/Vinyl) "Immersion" box set.
The original album, Gabriel's most commercially successful project, has sold more than five million units in the U.S. alone led by the groundbreaking single (and video) "Sledgehammer" and classic Gabriel songs "Red Rain", "Don't Give Up" (with Kate Bush), "Mercy Street" and "In Your Eyes".
The three-disc expanded edition will feature a remastered version of the original album along with two discs of 16 live tracks from Gabriel's 1987 tour performance in Athens, Greece. The pricey "Immersion Box" will include the So disc along with a DVD of the Athens performance (originally produced by Martin Scorsese), a 'DNA' CD featuring demos and tracks from the original sessionsand a DVD 'making of' documentary with interviews with Gabriel and producer Daniel Lanois.
The box also included a 12" vinyl single featuring two unreleased songs -- "Courage" and "Sagrada" -- and an alternate version of "Don't Give Up", a vinyl album of So as well as a 60-page bound book. Gabriel will hit the road this fall on a special "Back to Front" tour featuring performances of all tracks from So.
The Special Edition 3-CD set includes the remastered 'So' CD along with a previously unreleased 2 disc ‘Live In Athens 1987’ album.

I know fans have long clamored to have POV on DVD. So what is the DVD that's in this box? I did some googling and got the idea it is POV minus the off-stage footage, with some more songs added. Am I right? Does the DVD include performances of all the songs on the two-CD "Live in Athens" set?

A brief Introduction to the So Anniversary Reissue August 2012
Released in 1986, So became one of the defining albums of the era, landing multitudes of awards, millions of sales and a huge hit single with 'Sledgehammer'. But when Peter started work on this, his fifth album, in February 1985 in an old farmhouse called Ashcombe near Bath he had no idea of the explosive and enduring impact this album would have.
In February 1986 Peter finally finished the album:
"I think when we played the album back we knew it was good. It wasn’t like I was an obscure artist; I’d had hits with Shock The Monkey, Games Without Frontiers and Solsbury Hill but after each of them I’d purposefully retreated partially back into the shadows. With 'So' this was the end of the idea of me being a sort of cult artist at the fringes of the mainstream, especially in America. There wasn’t an option to go and hide in the shadows any more." 'So' 25th anniversary edition is the opportunity to explore how the album was made, the stories behind the songs, the evolution of each track and the outstanding live performance of the 'So' tour.
"Time leaves an indelible stamp on everything. When you revisit your past you can no longer live inside it, but you can walk around it, open up old memories and occasionally catch the scent of some place in which you lived". -Peter Gabriel
So Album Remastered: Engineer Richard Chappell Explains Why:
"In planning the 25th anniversary release of ‘So’ Peter was very keen to go back to original sonic ‘vision’ for the album. The album had been remastered in 2002 by Tony Cousins but Ian Cooper was the original mastering engineer at the Townhouse Studio in 1986. 25 years on Peter went back to Ian to reconsider the mastering process.''
''In early 2012 Peter and Ian met at Metropolis Mastering Studios (where Ian now works) and together they listened to the original half inch master tapes. Ian made some experimental changes but both he and Peter agreed that it sounded great as it was. Incredibly Ian actually had the original notes from the session 25 years before! They ended up approaching the mastering in the same way that they had at the very first session. A small amount of eq was added now and again and the limiting for the CD master was done using new prism converters.''
''Peter was happy with the final result. I then came back to Real World Studios to test the remaster and put it up against the first version of ‘So’ and the 2002 remaster. The new remaster by Ian stands up really very well against the original ‘So’ , now with even clearer definition in the top end. With the 2002 remaster Peter asked Tony to make some significant changes from the original – much more bottom end and mid range plus more compression added. Ian’s 2012 version is as true to the original as possible, but with the use of improved technology of today’s converters, it is a genuinely superior sound."

Q&A: Peter Gabriel Reflects on His 1986 Landmark Album 'So' September 2012
Peter Gabriel has never been one to look backward. He's refused all offers to go on a highly lucrative Genesis reunion tour, and he has yet to write a memoir, release a box set or create a documentary about his long career.
This fall, however, he has agreed to release a deluxe edition of his 1986 landmark album So. The disc transformed him from an art rocker with a cult following into one of the biggest pop stars in the world. MTV played his video "Sledgehammer" on what seemed like a never-ending loop, and radio fell in love with "In Your Eyes," "Don't Give Up" and "Big Time."
He's about to launch a North American tour where he performs the disc "Back To Front" along with other cuts from his solo career.
Rolling Stone spoke to Gabriel about the legacy of So, plans for the tour and when fans can finally expect to hear a follow-up to his 2002 disc Up.
Why do you think So managed to reach a much broader audience than your previous albums?
You also gave this one an actual title.
The next time out I decided to go for the anti-title. There's only two letters: So. It can be more a piece of graphic, if you like, as opposed to something with meaning and intention. And that's what I've done ever since.
When you made So, did you try and make it more accessible, or that was just sort of a natural development?
I think the video really helped get it to a different audience. I've not had many intersections with mass culture, so that was one occasion where that happened.
Did you see "In Your Eyes" as a special song when you made it?
Do you think the famous John Cusack scene in Say Anything has played a big role in keeping that song alive over the past 20 years?
There's a great scene on South Park where one of the kids serenades a girl with a jukebox, but he plays "Shock the Monkey" instead.
At a certain point did you feel that the "Sledgehammer" video got too big? MTV played it just a ridiculous amount of times.
You didn't release a follow-up to So for six years. Do you think that was a mistake? You sort of lost some momentum there.
Why are calling the tour "Front to Back?"
It's a different animal and I think the best thing is to sort of to acknowledge that and yet still work with some of the elements that you thought were good and strong and liked at that time. So, for example, the live show, I had this idea with camera booms; to replace the cameras with lights, but still have them have the freedom of movement. And at the time it was quite futuristic, now it's quite retro. But because there are people operating it, it will have, I think, a different mood than if it was robots. So, we will be revisiting, but I think it will feel different.
How will the show be structured?
Are there certain obscure songs you're thinking about playing in the first half of the show that you haven't done in a long time?
What's your plan when the tour ends? Will you take it to Europe?
Next month is the exact 10-year anniversary of your last studio album. Are you working toward a new one?
Is your next disc still going to be called I/O, or will it be a different project?
