I've seen her early videos, etc. She might be able to "play" an instrument and write absolutely stupid lyrics, but that doesn't make her any less of an amateur. Plus, her voice has one of the most shrill timbres known to mankind.

What's sad is that the 'amateur' actually puts forth the effort to learn how to play more than one instrument and write any lyrics at all compared to some artists who get more praise than her. I've heard quite a few stupid Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Britney, etc. lyrics in their catalogs, but people like to plant their lips on their asses every chance they get. I definitely won't deny that Katy doesn't have the best vocal abilities...I don't particularly like her live vocals at all to be totally honest and think Gaga is a way better vocalist hands down. I may not like Britney but even I won't take away from the fact that she's a very good entertainer or was when she had the passion for it so for people to make it seem as if Katy is just a pretty face with no talents whatsoever is really just disrespectful and pretty incorrect. Definitely different strokes for different folks. As much as I can't stand Katy Perry, I despise Beyonce even more. Both of them have some of the dumbest lyrics ever while pretending to be more than that, and it annoys me to no end.

Britney has a few songs that I can get into as cheap thrills like "Gimme More", and Gaga has a few songs I really like, but none of those artists are anywhere near my favorites.

Stans are just mad cause she broke one of their idols records. Ignore them.

I just don't get why they feel the need to hate on her for that. They should be hating on her fans because she didn't go out and buy all her own singles or albums to get her to that point. People don't have to congratulate her but they don't have to be petty and hate on her because she broke their idol's record...I really would hope they were more mature than that. I'm amazed it was her who managed to do this over Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber to be totally honest. Katy is my guilty pop pleasure but she's not at the top of my favorites lists by any means. Honestly, when she first came out with that 'I Kissed A Girl' song, I wanted to strangle her. I hate that song with all my being...always have and always will. The song that made me like her was 'Thinking of You', which despite that silly 'syrup-y center' lyric was quite a beautiful song with a stunning video to compliment it. She's a pop artist and definitely nowhere near the level of a MJ or Prince.
