I wouldn't say that Can't Slow Down is underrated.It sold over 10 million copies and won a ton of awards

One of my favorites,as wellThis is possibly my favourite song from possibly my favourite Lionel solo album... there were a lot of very decent tracks on that one that never appear on any of his compilations. According to the liner notes of the Can't Slow Down Deluxe Edition, Lionel had initially wanted Quincy Jones to produce this album, then Maurice White, but both were busy. Finally, James Anthony Carmichael became available when the Commodores decided to self-produce their next album. | |

I remember when this album was released in the fall of 1982,there was so much going on in the R&B world at that time! Such an exciting time
Luther Vandross released Forever,For Always,For Love Marvin Gaye released Midnight Love Michael Jackson released Thriller Prince released 1999 Jeffrey Osborne released Jeffrey Osborne Lionel Richie released Lionel Richie

The Isleys released Between The Sheets that year too. I don't know what season but i do know on the liner notes that Ronald Isley mentioned there was a little friendly competition going on between him and Marvin Gaye at CBS. When Marvin released Sexual Healing, Ronald said the Isleys response was Between The Sheets.

I love me some solo Lionel
A lot on the org think he sold his funky soul to the devil...
But his 80's albums had some funky tunes Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I love Lionel's first two albums (and many songs from his later albums); and yes, he is underrated, especially here on the .org. For some reason, he's considered uncool these days, even by '80s pop and r&b lovers. [Edited 8/20/12 19:29pm] |

I completely agree!
But his debut album will forever be my favourite, with songs like "Serves You Right", "You Are" and one of his best ballads e-ver, "Wandering Stranger". I was amazed when I saw Lionel on the Time tour (with Sheila E in the band) and he played that song! Just like the white winged dove... |
