Who is Snoop kidding??

Ok, maybe I've been out of the loop, but when I read this over the weekend, I nearly puked. Who does this MF think he is to be claiming to be the reincarnate of Bob Marley? Not ever, ever, ever, ever!!

Are there really people out there that buy bullshit like this???

They just crowned me the Lion,” the man once known as Snoop Doggy Dogg said of his new name during a press conference Friday at TIFF.

Snoop, with his claims of being Bob Marley reincarnated, said the new name was bestowed upon him during a transformative journey to Jamaica.

“It's associated with Rastafari. It's associated with reggae music and they felt like the Dogg was no longer needed.”

But while discussing Reincarnated, the VICE Magazine-produced documentary about that spiritual transformation, Snoop faced questions about whether the change was genuine and how fans would cope without the Dogg.

“It's a natural transformation,” he said. “I don't believe you have to address it as long as your actions show that it's real.”

As for the music, while his new yet-to-be released album, also called Reincarnated, turns completely to reggae, Snoop said he's still willing to appease fans.

“As a performer, I understand the business,” Snoop said. “A lot of my fans are going to want Snoop Dogg. And I'm going to give it to them. It is what it is.”

Some of the old Dogg was on display at the news conference, as he was asked to speak to the controversy of using the B-word on his past albums.

“I still use it in my everyday life,” Snoop said, before using it multiple times in a sentence to prove the point.

The documentary itself promises to bring fans into the “spiritual odyssey” that birthed the Lion.

Just the fact that he has the balls to say he's Bob reincarnate, made my blood boil. He will never come close to anything Bob was.

Exactly. Especially compared to what Bob actually accomplished in his 18-year career as not only a musician but also as an activist and humanitarian, Snoop will never hold up. Better stick to his tired ass raps.

I'm shocked that someone actually gave him money to make this documentary and I'm even more shocked that the people of Jamaica aren't up in arms about it. Bob is sacred to them, isn't he?

That's what I was wondering. Why would anyone dig this? Especially the country where Bob was born at.

I haven't had time to check the Jamaican press or anyplace that deals in roots or even dub lately, but I'd bet some good $$$$$ that a fair ruckus is going on over this! cool Nesta isn't so much a saint as a national hero for many (tho not all by any means), so I know this Snoop sitch has to be rather controversial in JA.

Snoop is many things, but nobody (I hope) would describe him as national hero material. That said, I'm not so sure this is completely cynical on his part. Roots reggae isn't exactly a huge seller these days (even in da Yard) so maybe he's has some sort of pot driven moment! lol

I bet he cool with the Jr. Marleys. I doubt he would even do something like that without their blessing.

I haven't heard anything from them about this.

That fool couldn't have thought he's Bob Marley incarnate because Snoop was at least 10 years old when he passed away confused

Jamaicans say Snoop Lion is Jafakin’

A Lion in Zion? Snoop Dogg embraces Rasta, changes name

By Nicholas Nehamas

August 7, 2012

Snoop Dogg has changed his name to Snoop Lion, and his persona from hip hop gangsta to chilled out Rasta.

Jamaicans don’t seem very impressed with Snoop Dogg. Excuse me…make that Snoop Lion.

The West Coast rap star changed his name from canine to feline, and wants to change his image, too. Snoop says a religious experience has awakened him to Rastafarianism, an Afro-centric religion with roots in Jamaica. As a result, he’s given up hip-hop in favor of reggae.

“I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated,” says Snoop.

Jamaicans aren’t so sure. Writing in the Jamaica Observer, Barbara Gloudon goes after the American star: “Rapper Snoop Doggy Dog has decided to go Rasta, in costume at least, maybe to save a career which naw sey nutten right now. So he’s converted from Dawg to Lion, and nuff Rasta colors to go with it. Try yuh best Snoops! It takes more than a costume to make a Lion in Zion.”

Meanwhile, reader comments on a piece from the Jamaica Gleaner were equally biting. “I like Snoop,” says one, “but his attempt at Reggae is horrible, he needs to stick to that which is familiar to him.”

Another: “It is just another case of Reggae robbery.”

A favorite from a poster who wrote that Snoop is simply “JAFAKING!”

But some Jamaican dance-hall and reggae artists disagree, perhaps wary of angering a potential new collaborator.

“Him have to seh Snoop Lion,” argues Elephant Man in an interview with the Weekend Star, “cause him come a Jamaica and him see the culture and how sweet reggae and dancehall music is . . . him come and get addicted to the culture.”

Among other things, we’re sure.

Snoop’s new single “La La La,” produced by Major Lazer, is currently number four on the iTunes reggae chart. Their album, Reincarnated, and a related documentary debut this year. So can Snoop Lion sing? Here at Latitude News we still prefer the chill beat on “Ain’t Nuthin’ but a G Thang.”

lol I haven't even made it to the Jamaican media yet and I told y'all so upthread! lol I can't wait to read what they say in the Gleaner and Observer. The Jamaican media and Jamaican commentatros bring it much harder than anything US based...I love reading their take on shit.

That said, if the younger Marleys don't have a beef w/ it, I think it'll work out just fine. Jr Gong in particular is one to watch given his work w/ US based rappers.

I have nothing against him or anyone trying to stay relevant. What pisses me off is his comment that he's Bob Marley reincarnated. Please! Never will he be even remotely close to that.

When he makes comments like that, he only hurts his own cause. He could've said he was born again as a Rastafarian and I would've respected it but not go that far.
