Napoleon XIV ~ They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa! You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

My husband Ron turned me on to this a few years ago. I think it's a great novelty record. And if I may be so bold to say...probably the first rap song. I can hear Eminem doing a cover of this. If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

The oldies station used to play this a lot. As far as rap goes, there's many songs before this that could be considered proto-rap. Shirley Ellis' Name Game is one. OK, I'm showing my age --...when I was a little kid, I had one of those K-tel ( ) record compilations called "Looney Tunes", with all of these old novelty records, and "They're Coming To Take Me Away" was one of my favorites!!!

I saw this song being performed by hand-puppets on some children's program when I was a little kid, and it scared the shit outta me! Even now, when I hear this song, I think it's creepy as Hell.

At the end of Gonna Buy Me A Dog during the fadeout, Davy Jones quotes this song. I had a K-Tel cassette with some disco & pop hits. It had Heart Of Glass, Pina Colada Song, and Don't Stop Till You Get Enough on it. holy shit parts of that sound similar to the ending dialouge of If I Was Your Girlfriend "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

I read once that there was a straight take of Dog. The released version is the first take. They thought the song was stupid, so just started goofing in the studio.
