Best Black Rock Group/Performer Who do you think is the best black rocker? My number one is FUNKADELIC. Their early 70s material is fantastic. That mix of rock, R&B, soul, and funk was awesome. The more or less straight up rock songs are great -- super stupid, music for my mother, maggot brain, and so on are great. Even in later years, they had some solid rock songs -- lunchmeatophobia and field manuevers, for example.
Here's my list of great black rockers (groups & individuals) in roughly chronological order: - Chuck Berry - Jimi Hendrix - Funkadelic - Prince - Bad Brains - Fishbone - Living Colour - Lenny Kravitz - 24-7 Spyz
Any more good ones you can think of? Grammar edit [Edited 7/15/12 11:18am] "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

It’s really sad that, in today’s music scene, I can only think of two young black rock acts. And that’s if I count Robert Randolph and the Family Band.

They were the touring band for The Temptations in the late 1960's. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I'd add Mint Condition 2 that list but they don't do it enough 2 qualify. I would also add the group Sandra St. Victor used 2 be in as well. [Edited 7/15/12 6:43am]

Mother's Finest, talk about a terribly underrated rock band. Joyce Kennedy is one of my favorite rock vocalists period. A few weeks ago, I was pleasantly surprised when Sheryl Underwood mentioned the band on the show "The Talk". Hey...

I would hesitantly add Sly & the Family Stone to that list as well. Because at that time when they first started Rock Radio stations accepted them first before Black R&B/Soul circuit did. The same with Bob Marley. Another great Black Rock performer was this man - Arthur Lee of Love.

Well, for starters, he made the song that many people consider to be one of the best rock ballads of all time, "Purple Rain".
It's true that Prince's rock stuff is often fused together with synthpop type of production ideas - "Little Red Corvette", "She's Always In My Hair", "Fury" etc. - but he's also made a good number of straightforward rock numbers over the years. Just because some song has a synth on it doesn't make it "not rock" though.

I used to sometimes listen to the local AOR station in the 1980's and I've never heard them on it. They did play Jon Butcher Axis & Robert Cray. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

This is true, but the category rock would still be wrong. These guys are not rock artists, and Prince is neither. Prince I will always miss and love U.
