I know they weren't consistent with the genre but I thought they both killed it when they tried. Who agrees?

I used to sometimes listen to the local AOR station in the 1980's and I've never heard them on it. They did play Jon Butcher Axis & Robert Cray.

Sorry, I misread the title, it says rock...and I don't care whoever thinks Prince can be categorized as Rock cause he isn't. Period

Then why is he in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Huh? Huh? HUH?!?

ABBA is in there too, and I don't think they're rock. lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Not exactly "rock", but rock-influenced. Jesse Johnson played guitar on "Black Cat" and Michael worked with many rock guitar players: Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Orianthi, and that's Steve Stevens (Billy Idol's guitarist/co-song writer) in the "Dirty Diana" video and playing on the song itself.

As far as 50's-era rock guitar, besides Chuck Berry, there was Bo Diddley

These clips are from the 60s, but the songs were recorded in the 50's:

Wow that really is.

How about these guys - The Chamber Bros.

You know, I've heard this song so many times in '60s themed movies and tv shows but never knew who performed it. I'll definitely look up their catalog. Thanks for posting the clip smile

Great suggestions everyone! Now I've got some new stuff to check out.

What's Prince got to do with rock? Um, he plays rock songs. Sure, he's better known for pop & funk, but I'm not a purist. I want to hear some rock sometimes, and he's an option. Let's see ... I'm Yours, Bambi, Free, Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, America, Electric Chair, Endorphine Machine, Dolphin, Zannalee, Chaos & Disorder, Last December, Dreamer ... Need I go on?

I've thought about this for a long time, and the three best Black rock groups are:

1. Black Sabbath

2. Black Crowes

3. Black Keys

Prince crushes all 3 of these acts in hi sleep.
