Is Mama's Gun really better than Baduizm? Cause I like her debut a lot more. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I tried to get into Mama's gun, like I did with Baduizm, but I just didn't love it as much. I personally can't say if one is better than the other because I do enjoy songs from Mama's gun, but I've always had Baduizm on repeat. "I took another bubble bath, with my pants on. All the fighting stopped. Next time I’ll do it sooner.”

I know that will get allot of flack for what I am about to say but, who cares. ""Mamma's Gun", is her last good album. Her first, was Baduizm. As for which one is better, my vote goes to her debut. To me, it's more cohesive.

I have forever tried to get into the hype over mama's gun but it just has never clicked for Baduism is the album that I still listen to more. Life has a way of making you live it. . . .

Same. Now that I have finally listened to the whole album myself its not all what its hyped up to be to me as well (this coming from a big Badu fan).
Granted, it of course has some really solid tracks like Didnt cha know, Kiss Me on my neck, In Love With You, Green Eyes and of course the funky production on some tracks but it seems kinda all over the place and not cohesive.
I think Baduism is definitly Erykahs best album so far to me but then again I havent listened to all her albums but Im getting there .
I think the reason why it gets the hype it gets is because of her experimentation and her growth from Baduism. Baduism is a neo soul album, I cant say the same for Mama Guns which was very risky, funky, soulful, jazzy etc alot of fusion of diffent genres production wise but I still prefer Baduism, I play that album all the time. I agree with a poster who said it was cohesive as well.

It's the Badu album I listen to the least. I recently seen Badu in London and she played just one track from New Amerykah Two, the set was made up of mostly Mamma's Gun and New Amerykah One. I was delighted to say the least as they are the albums I enjoy the most.
As for the OP's question. Why don't you just get MG, listen to it and make up your own mind for once.

Being a huge Erykah fan, I'll say the same like I did with D'Angelo and that is that ; I prefer Baduizm because of the sound and the overall feelings it gives me.

Man, Mamma's Gun is An Awesome album. Sonically she is a whole lot freeer, the songs on Baduizm always seemed boring, safe and stale to me, like she was over produced and wasnt really just able to BE, Mammas Gun is her emancipation album, she dropped the whole "head wrap" look like a bad date, and left many of the followers lookin stupid (India Arie, Jill Scott). When her fan base and others called her out when people didnt get that she did the Bob Marley tribute with dread extensions she sheared all her hair off and the clones stopped following her, well maybe India went bald too, go figure. She got Free, fast...on Mammas Gun her vocals where loud and ugly and her arrangements and song structure was unorthodox and free, was she gonna get the easy listening/oprah crowd that ate up Baduizm in the end? NO. But she validated herself as a committed artist to progression in black music as well preserving the sound and artistry that inspired her in the first place. Ive read in interviews Erykah praise Joi as one of the most talanted and creative people she knew, so imagine being friends and inspired by such talant and freedom and then be stiffled by an album and Major label manufactured image like the one she had on Baduizm, that was like Neo-Soul kool aid, just add water. So naturally when she seen her chance she ran with it, bag lady is brilliant and catchy and commerically clever by using the over the top hit sample from Dre, but it also showed that though earthy she is very grounded and rooted to the "street" side of the culture as well a theme she continued to connect with her later material (Danger, On the Grind, cameos in rappers vids, and most recently the Window Seat/Get Muny remix with Rick Ross).Mammas gun is solid personal and ALL BADU, her foray into producing her own stuff is what sustains her to this day, if she would kept up the Baduizm head wrap sistah girl schtick the labels would have dropped her as soon as Neo soul was OLD like two years after that. She made proper changes owned and mastered her shit, and has an awesome catalouge and album sales to back it all up. It was worth it. On top of that she has the BEST live show in the business hands down, see the footage of her in Rome doing Kiss Me On My Neck...Goddess. That first album was palatable fodder...

I love how intricate the album's production was. To me, it sounds like she never really put her weight on a project like this, before or since. Not to mention, from a lyrical perspective, it seemes to be her most ginuine one.

Well Dayum
I love Baduizm such a flawless album... I dont see how you think Baduizm gets alot of love. Mamas Gun gets alot more credit than Baduizm thats why the OP posed the question I guess its all matter of opinion. I like Mamas Gun as well and can clearly hear her growth and experimentation but Baduizm is a classic and special as well unique... Ive NEVER heard Oprah promote Baduizm.. where on camera has she done it? [Edited 7/5/12 16:50pm]

Baduizm is corny.
Mama's Gun is dated.
Worldwide Underground trumps both.

That isnt the only album Ive listened to I said I havent listened to ALL her albums to make the assessment that Baduizm is her best but from what I have heard.. it is to me. Cohesive meaning everything flowed together which it did nicely on Baduizm I cant say the same for Mamas Gun. There both good albums, nobodys trashing it

Lol. I was just joking, most women love Baduizm it was a time an placement thing its classic and groundbreaking, me personally it was a little to female for me, lol, but it was an ok album, I guess, I aint start respecting her til she broke out the box of the head wraps, 5 percent rhetoric and tired assed rimshot, plus vocally they where styling her as a cool jazz singer when in reality she wanted to FUNK like Chaka and Betty Davis, lol. And She did an Oprah special, performing in all white at some island where Oprah had a whole bunch of 40 something's there trying to understand "On & On" an "Apple Tree" lol...

I wanna a rim shot, hey, digi, digi ....
I cant stand Ofah shes so fake she probably didnt even understand the meaning either...
But in all seriousness Im glad that Erykah experimented with other things besides Neo Soul. She showed that she is versatile and didnt just get stuck there like alot of artists from her era have.

I think "Baduizm" is great but it's overplayed. "Mama's Gun" I think was slightly better. I love the melodies and laid back feel on that disc.
But what the hell..I love ALL her stuff.
