I absolutely don't believe that! lol I saw her perform last year and she absolutely had to have seen and studied James Brown's moves... But, I'm really excited about her new album. biggrin She is a very innovative artist and I look forward to her next endeavor.

Watch she'll end up like D'Angelo saying she's the reincarnated JB, without ever seeing him live before as proof that she is. lol

I think she partially set herself up for that... considering how she's dressed and her hair style not to mention the psuedo dance moves...

She's trying too hard, as usual. Her voice is more suited for Broadway musicals

and other genres of music that require a classically trained voice than for her

pop music explorations.

Whereas Hendrix's music, musicianship, aura, & stage presence seemed to have

been effortless on his part, she's totally calculatingly trying to be different just

to be so.

It's just bs haha.. Saw her last year too, she def studied James Brown. I mean the cape she takes on and off on stage all the time, is def inspired by Brown, the moves and the fashion as well. She's just trying to be interesting. Love her though, even tho I think she would fit more in the Broadway scene (singing wise) biggrin I cant wait for her album biggrin

Yes, especially when she does the thing with the cape like James Brown did. She started doing that just before she performed, on either Letterman or Leno somewhere around 2010(?). And anyone who knows about JB knows that he used to have the cape thrown over him, taken off, put back on and taken off again, when he sang 'Please, Please, Please'. The cape was his signature marke, which was a major part of his act. She was dancing all over the stage as part of her act, long before Puff signed her, because I remember some friends who was into her music and performance back around 2008, while she was trying to make a name for herself.

She also wrote songs for Outkast's 'Idlewild' movie. But if you look at how her dancers was 'suited up' like JB's 3 male dancers from back in the 60s, with his group 'The Famous Flames', and Janelle's dancers were emulating some of their dance moves. so whomever helped choreographed that video, had to have some inspiration from seeing JB and his dancers perform. Especially if you're able to see that 'TAMI' show from the 60s, you will see how some of the choreography of Janelle's dancers in that vid is very similar. I posted that JB vid about 2 years ago here, to show the similarities. Youtube had taken down, but it's back up again.

See for yourselves. starting around mark 6:20, you can see the same moves from the 'Famous Flames' that Janelle's dancers did in that 'Tightrope' vid:

James Brown, singing 'Please, Please, Please' go to mark 2:56 to see JB in his famous 'cape' move:

I guess so, but I have to say I appreciate her creativity and her music as well, even if she claims she didn't know about JB, I can't imagine if her parents hadn't and that they didn't have some of his music around the house. lol

You have a point Timmy. JB used to have his hair in the front like that back in the day, similar to how she wears hers and he used to 'suit up' as well as his dancers wearing suits/white shirts. lol So yeah, with the similarities to how she dresses similar to JB's look and the hairdo, guess it's kind of questionable that she didn't know about him. lol It is what it is I guess.

Agree.

She definitly was inspired by James Brown but regardless whether what she said was b.s or not she definitly is interesting and has great style.

I dont think her hair due is suppose to mimic JB though... Her hair style is very original and after she started wearing that style more girls with natural hair started doing that style.

I dont think her image is as contrived as some other pop stars I can mention but shall not name.

Even when she is not performing or even on a red carpet (out casually) she has a certain distinctive style which to me is not similiar to JB its all her own.

SONNYT

Just been looking at some live shaky Youtube footage of 'Electric Lady' and....is it just me, but doesn't the bassline sound almost identical to Sly stone's 'If You want Me To Stay'? Not a bad thing mind you....Can't wait to hear her new album. I've worn the other one out!

I guess I only related her do to JB because I remembered when JB wore that pompadour type of 'do in his early days, that somehow Janelle's reminds me of. I really like her style. She's an interesting performer. Saw her at MSG/NYC when she opened for Prince. My son's friend interviewed her sometime back in 2008/2009 (can't remember, but this was just right after she got signed with PDiddy and my sone and his friend did him a small favor, and filmed a snippet of her performing at BBKings in NYC, when PDiddy was just promoting her). She seems to have her head pretty together for her age and knows what she wants out of her music career. Very creative musically I might add.
