I stay away from ALL shows like this, whether its the BET awards, the MTV MUSIC? AWARDS, the MTV movie Awards, the Vh1 whatever awards and divas etc...i avoid them all like A child should avoid Jerry Sandusky, For the simple fact that i know RIGHT off the bat im going to hate at least 90% of who is on it, and trust me i have given chances, and im not even talking about their music or performances, if thats all that happend on these shows then id be watching, if it was a straight performing straight awards show then im there, BUT its not, its egos gone wild for artists that have no right to have egos at all. Its too much of Kids in the candy store type shit going on, i have no problem being older than the artists, but god cant they at least be fucking mature? is it too much to ask for adults to behave like adults? but all this bravado and chest bumping and shit, its like a football game, and awards are touchdowns and shit. So honestly i stayed away from that Show, i checked some clips and i saw what i think i wouldve seen had i watched the whole show. Yea I didnt technically watch it I just saw small clips. I watched Whitneys tribute and the tribute to Frankie Beverly and Maze.. THATS IT I didnt even plan on watching it but did and I exactly was impressed.
I caught D angelo on youtube
I couldnt sit through that whole hot ghetto mess of a show but I pretty much agree with your post. These award shows now are about ratings and popularity. The categories are a joke as well as the awards. It really ashame how horrible these music organizations have gotten.

In my head award shows should have these type of perfomances and not Chris Brown.... Well I gotta keep dreaming cuz it aint happening no time soon. .... When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace -Jimi Hendrix

I guess I can understand the D'Angelo hate. Smooth and sexy isn't for eveyone.
But the whole looks thing is getting tired. Against my better judgement I tuned in to Tom Joyner and they were going on about how fat he is, but wound up saying he was a standout for the night.
Truth be told he looks almost like he did pre-Untitled but with age. His style? Yeah I think he's going for some rock thing and I bet it'll make a lot more sense when the album drops, which will be huge by the way.
And everyone is reporting on Nicki Minaj's what's-that-sound? expression she wore during his performance. Methinks she'll never live it down. LOL

I don't know girl.
To me Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown were the definition of sucked.
D'Angelo was on point.
Then again maybe people don't like jam sessions anymore.

Okay so when you say MJ, you mean MIchael Jackson, the King of Pop who died 3 years ago? Is this who you are talking about? I don't understand...how can you fight over the ownership of someone who is deceased? Anyway, like I said, a growing woman. like myself, needs a nutritious man, like D'Angelo. I bet you he can how a woman how her 'p' works better than Brian McKnight. He don't have to make a song about it."I took another bubble bath, with my pants on. All the fighting stopped. Overall, a very interesting and high quality show, even the pre-show and after-party.
Samuel L. Jackson superbly did his host role. Enjoyed his multiple wardrobe selections.
The live performances were top level quality as were the sketches for "Real Husbands", the satire of the Real Housewives shows.
This is one of the few awards shows that I watched from start to finish in the past 20 years.
The 7/3/12 encore should be worth it for people were not watching it on 7/1.

Yeah I saw the performance and no it really didn't suck at all. What sucked was Nicki Minaj's dirty mouth ass, who else sucked was that Maybach music bullshit, another suckee was Chris Brown's performance...and that opening that I missed, saw that on the BET site this morning, yeah I like Kanye, but that performance sucked ass as well. D'Angelo was the ONLY performance that was of quality that wasn't an actual tribute performance to somebody else. He brought the realness of what a live stage performance should go. He's come a long way and looks great and sounds great. So we just going to have agree to disagree on this one. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

D'Angelo killed it. Fuck yeah!
Some of those little munchkins in the audience looked like their eyeballs were gonna explode while D was playing. Shame they didn't really. Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

That guitar intro (along with his playing in general) by Spanky Alford was simply vicious!

This year's show wasn't bad, I loved Kanye's performace the ending was so raw and he had his girl Kim by his side coordinating.

Also the Whitney tribute was nice, Cissy's performance was touching "we make our heroes in America only to destroy them"
